I prefer coaching stability, in all sports. For seton hall, he is the face. We don’t and likely won’t have a truly marketable player any time soon. Why?
I like him but no way we should have/needed to do this. It means nothing in terms of locking him up, if someone else ever wants him, they'd easily buy it out.
I like him, he's done a nice job here, but not a great job. NIL money is certainly a big cause but not the only cause.
Use to be that you always needed at least 4 years on your contract due to recruiting high school players but that is no longer the case, no need to have any more than 3 years on a contract. Again, if someone else wants him, this contract would in no way be a hindrance.
Great for Shaheen, pretty meaningless for Seton Hall.
But this doesn't do ANYTHING for stability. If someone wants him and he wants to leave, a contract means little.I prefer coaching stability, in all sports. For seton hall, he is the face. We don’t and likely won’t have a truly marketable player any time soon.
He got an extension after the NIT championship, (remember, Louisville was after him, LOL!) I think through 2030. This probably adds 2 years which was not necessary. Probably got a pay raise instead of putting more funds towards rev sharing. He initially signed a 6-year deal (this is year 5). This adds 4 extra years through 2032.
This is how the game is played. His agent had some bargaining power after winning BECOY. Question is how much is he getting paid.
It’s stability in the sense we aren’t getting rid of him on our own terms. You really think there’s better out there for Seton Hall? But this doesn't do ANYTHING for stability. If someone wants him and he wants to leave, a contract means little.
And so much for the hot seat. Having an average at best record sure pays in the joke of college athletics these days.
He’s the right coach for Seton Hall but we shouldn’t bend over for him either. He was signed through 2030 with good pay. It’s stability in the sense we aren’t getting rid of him on our own terms. You really think there’s better out there for Seton Hall?
Hopefully but they never have before. Is the admin smart enough to include a significant buyout clause?
You don’t get it, Sha wants to be here. What more could you ask for.But this doesn't do ANYTHING for stability. If someone wants him and he wants to leave, a contract means little.
And so much for the hot seat. Having an average at best record sure pays in the joke of college athletics these days.
And two more questions are what is the buyout for him and what is the buyout for us. The length is meaningless if either party can terminate for no or minimal cost.He initially signed a 6-year deal (this is year 5). This adds 4 extra years through 2032.
This is how the game is played. His agent had some bargaining power after winning BECOY. Question is how much is he getting paid.
Wins, ncaa tournaent appearances/wins, BE conference tourney wins, a roster not filled w mid major players, better offense, should I continue? You don’t get it, Sha wants to be here. What more could you ask for.
We have no choice. In Sha we trust
All coming our way.Wins, ncaa tournaent appearances/wins, BE conference tourney wins, a roster not filled w mid major players, better offense, should I continue?
If nothing else we have a larger buyout to the school in that circumstance. But this doesn't do ANYTHING for stability. If someone wants him and he wants to leave, a contract means little.
And so much for the hot seat. Having an average at best record sure pays in the joke of college athletics these days.
He got extended after the NIT run to 2030. This extends it 2 years with a huge raise and hopefully huge buyout with no expectations attached at all. This has been in the works for a very long time quietly behind the scenes. Holloway had two years left on his original 6 year deal and this once again gives him 6 years in total.
Not hopefully. Officially. He deserved the extra years and the school deserved the huge buyout.hopefully huge buyout
So if the administration said to Sha he’s getting another 2 years and 8 million dollars you would expect him to say no because they didnt promise more investments? The important part of the extension is what, if anything, was Sha able to get for his Rev Share/NIL funding. If all it did was get him more in salary and years and raises for his staff then it means little in the big picture. He should have been fighting to secure University support to have a top-half BE budget. That's the only thing that will bring Seton Hall basketball back to respectability and NCAATs/BE championships.
Hopefully The Trove can ask that direct question to Bryan Felt in their upcoming interview.
Genuine question: is there a middle ground between your post and the “master recruiter, master motivator” tweet from above and does it make one a naysayer to think that? Because I think most board falls there. So much of what Holloways does is behind the scenes. He's not the warmest guy nor is he strong with media relationships. But his work ethic and details as regards the program are second to none.
Other than his family there is nothing else in his life that is nearly as important as Seton Hall basketball. He bleeds Pirate Blue and that's not just a catch phrase.
Does he have a few flaws? of course. But the good outweighs the bad and it's not close.
Everyone at the school was onboard with this extension. And as noted above so are his peers.
Seems the only naysayers are a few posters on this board and maybe our good friend Jeff Goodman.
Noted as an EXCELLENT recruiter?! When was that?Did SHU have to do this right now? Probably not. But why wait if you feel this is the person who you want to lead your program and you feel because of his hard work you want to show him the appreciation you strongly believe he deserves?
I have no issues with what the Pirates have done and my only concern is the language to protect the school should he leave in the future.
Holloway came here at the very worst of times. He was noted as an excellent recruiter who always was able to punch above his weight. But that was eventually nullified to a strong degree by the new rules of free agency and NIL.
Is he a great coach? No, there are not many of them and we would never be able to afford one even if we were interested. But he is a next level coach and I can see no other comparable alternative that would come to Seton Hall.
There is no question in my mind that in the traditional sit out transfer system, Sha would have excelled at Seton Hall. He was the talk of college hoops. The NIL and more importantly, the free transfer free agency, decimated that advantage at a a place like Seton Hall that is slow to change.I'm fine with the extension. All things considered I feel we are lucky to have him. Regarding his contract, I'd be more concerned about what we'd have to pay him to move on if we have three consecutive years of bottom-half BE results.
I take issue with the above statement that Holloway "came here at the very worst of times." Agreed that we got caught with our pants down getting on the NIL bandwagon, but he arrived from his NCAA run as THE poster boy of college coaches. Also Seton Hall had been more than relevant in BE and national circles having gone to the tournament the previous five of six seasons. (Six of seven if one were to count the COVID year.) He wasn't exactly taking over Coppin State.
He brought in Khadeen Carrington when he was an assistant. Forged a great relationship with the mom and closed the deal.Noted as an EXCELLENT recruiter?! When was that?
Also he’s not a master motivator..that is a more ridiculous comment than him being an EXCELLENT recruiter
Thanks Dan, well putHe brought in Khadeen Carrington when he was an assistant. Forged a great relationship with the mom and closed the deal.
And as good as Carrington was he topped it by bringing in Myles Powell and he became one of the best players in the Big East in his time here.
Did you like Angel Delgado? This from Google....
The main recruiter responsible for bringing Angel Delgado to Seton Hall was former assistant coach Shaheen Holloway. He served as the lead recruiter for Delgado and was instrumental in landing the Pirates' top-15 national recruiting class in 2014, which also included Isaiah Whitehead and Khadeen Carrington.
How about Najai Hines? He just left SHU for a $4M contract at UConn. Think if we could have afforded him what he could have done at SHU.
Ditto Budd Clark, 2nd team All Big East and first team All Defense. all in just one year at the Hall. He left after just that one season for almost $3M for an SEC team.
There are others of course but you get my drift.
Regarding motivation....since he has been our head coach most every one of his peers have said publicly no team in the conference plays harder than the Pirate, which culminated in an unanimous COY selection. Those comments were a common refrain from every coach in the post games that I attended. Your team doesn't play that hard without being motivated.
I have attended several practices where Holloway was both an assistant to Kevin Willard and now the head coach. I have never seen a more intense coach or motivator in all my years.
