Hope he proves that 4 star rating .

>Garavaglia spent last season as a reserve for Ratiopham Ulm in the top division of German basketball. He averaged 2.7 points and 1.7 rebounds per game in 33 appearances. He performed well at the Under-18 European Championships last summer averaging 14.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game while shooting 42.1% from three-point range. He played 29 minutes in seven appearances.<

Seems like a good pick up - but I wonder why the article refers to him as a “big man”? Seems like he’s probably a 3 at 6-6 - right?

If this guy turns out to be any good Rutgers would be smart to build some sort of advertising campaign around him.

I read an article saying he's 6'7, the added inch still doesn't qualify him as a big man , unless he's a small power forward , being classified as a PF is considered a big man position no matter what the size of the player manning it is.
A google search found this :
>International & FIBA Play: He is frequently listed and utilized as a power forward (or "stretch four") due to his physical 6-foot-7 size, toughness, and rebounding abilities<

Watching him play, seems like a 3 to me. Plays defense so I love the pick up. This addition alone all but guarantees well be better at D 1-4. Not sure about the D at the 5 spot though. Hope we’re adding one more piece even if it’s a PF who could play stretches with Sydnor without a true center.

Don't see how this kid is not a starter by the fifth game of the season, especially if his defense is as advertised. What a stroke, and he's light years ahead of last year's Euros. I think we now win 18+ games. Welcome back RU.

The scouting report on his defense is huge. Shooting always more of a crap shoot but we have more than enough horses for Pike to work with when it comes to stopping a scoring drought. The D has been the bigger Achilles heel, so adding a lengthy 6-7 kid with a recruiting profile like this who played 15 mpg as a reserve on a top tier Germany team FOR HIS DEFENSE is just huge at this stage. Jones has length too and a reputation of being a solid defender as does Sydnor. So look - when you recognize that these are going to be the guys in the mix to replace (Zrno, Grant and Denis) some of our worst defensive minutes it feels like a pretty big upgrade. Especially when you combine that with guys like Lino, Tariq, Buchanan and Powers having a year in the system under their belts.

It’s great to hear Ware made some progress, and while Buca didn’t impress in the open practice, he wasn’t “unplayable at KState” but still… it seems like perhaps we may have undervalued Big O / Dortch contributions on defense. I’m hoping to see an addition that could potentially provide 15 plus minutes of defense in the 5 spot whether via a 2 PF line up or the addition of another traditional center. I guess we’ll have to see what we get with that last spot. This feels like the missing link. Pike teams that have excelled historically have been able to put out a lock down defensive line up. It feels like we might be one player away from having that.

This kid reminds me stylistically of Marcus Domask, who played for Illinois two years ago and average 15.9 ppg, 5 rpg, and 3.9 apg. Just has a similar deft touch around the basket and is a smart passer. Also has nice form on his 3-pt shot. I wouldn't really call him a sharpshooter; more that he CAN stroke the three. But he is very adept at scoring within 15 feet in various ways.

Before anyone goes crazy, I'm not saying Diego is going to average the numbers that Domask averaged, just that I think they have similar STYLES.

If he has been playing 15 minutes a game for a professional team at the g league level for his defense, he is likely to make an impact at the college level. He certainly shouldn’t be surprised by the level of play. However, we really don’t know how any of the transfers or recruits will do until they play against Big Ten level teams in a crazed Big Ten arena!

Yeah - this. Defense is a much more reliable predictive metric. He’s not logging meaningful (non-garbage time) minutes at the level he played at in Germany without lighting it up unless he earned that time via defense which is consistent with the scouting report. In the weaker 18U league he put up the same pretty looking stats that the Euros before him did. It’s the proven defense that makes this addition way more promising than the Zrno, Denis, Oskar types before him. Especially considering we’re not exactly deep when it comes to defensive 3s and 4s. Huge pick up here IMO.
