A lot of the undergrad students who go to Ivy League schools now and the education that they receive there are largely no better than what you would get at an average state school. Thank God that these students still get a diploma with Harvard's or Yale's name on it, otherwise it's become an incredible waste of money.
And for many, it’s a prestige feather in the cap as opposed to a necessity. All the kids we know going to Harvard in the fall are from very wealthy families and don’t have to work if they don’t want to.
And these are the people who are or will run our country. We are in trouble.
At least Student 22 didn't cheat. They either didn't study or didn't understand the subject, but at least they seem to have ethics.
If my dreams were reality I’d be at like 15% because 3x a week I go through the dream where I went to class for only the first 2-3 weeks then sometime at the start of finals week I go “oh crap!”

We've been in trouble for a long time now.
I retired from teaching at the HACC in 2020. About a year prior to retirement, we were given an article at a faculty meeting regarding test scores for incoming students at PA Community Colleges. At Philadelphia Community College for example, in 2018, 70+% of incoming students tested as functionally illiterate. Some of those students were ESL students, but nowhere near the majority. All that the colleges were permitted to do was require each of those students to take remedial English classes. Had to enroll them since they held a diploma or GED.
There are a LOT of students in American colleges who can't read or do basic math without using a calculator.

I have a close relative who is a tenured professor at a prestigious New England school. The use of AI is so common that she is resorting to in class blue book exams. The students don't care about learning. They just want the degree. Really sad.

I am 77 and still occasionally have that dream, Really strange. I have been out of grad school for 20 years. Out of undergraduate school for 50 years.
FWIW, AI can help write (and grade) in-class exams.
This becomes a game, though. Raise the “integrity” of your school and you risk losing applications.
And if professional roles after school prefer you leverage AI, then it’s not clear why those employers care.

Those voices you hear are not always other people though.
As someone who works in MD schools I will verify your comments. Kids are pushed through, 50% is the minimum grade you can give and then you are basically told to give group work tests and then you get the kid who can’t count past 10 getting a C in Algebra.
Our school district is worse. Mandated that B is the median grade in all courses. Trying to push it higher. Doesn't take much imagination to picture the result.
An issue for mathematics graduate students is that nowadays all the classic textbooks have complete proofs to their exercises posted online somewhere. It’s a rite of passage to do all the exercises in these textbooks and some of these can take a long time, like a week, for Joe Average to prove on their own.
I had a professor at Maryland who would rip me a new one every now and then, shouting, pointing fingers in my face, “You’ve got to face up to the fact that you’re just not working hard enough.” God bless him.

Also, it was the only person whose final exam score was higher than their mid-term score. A+ for ethics.
And I guarantee Student 1 sits in the middle of the front row and reads ahead of the lesson plan. Another A+.
the notion that you have to read to gain knowledge in a field has some how disappeared across disciplines and levels. I am a professor at a medical school. Gave a lecture yesterday to second year resident, so 2 years out of medical school on basic pharmacology, basic pharmacology of the most simple order. And blank faces. And I encourage them to read, at least 2 hours a night in residency. I invoke the motto of Faber University. Tell them the more factual info they have in their heads (gained through reading) the easier it will be to learn medicine. But in fairness the United States is not a literate culture currently, learning and ideas, art, literature challenging ideas are not highly culturally valanced or valued. So young people are a reflection of that
Were the students not permitted to use reference materials on the take home exam? I'm not sure that my score on an oral exam might not differ greatly from a takehome assignment ... over 50 years ago.

It happens to me all the time as well. And it’s always some course that I would never take like a graduate level math class or OChem. And I am lost because the final is in a building that I have never been in before. Once it was a final for rock climbing (I’m afraid of heights) and I show up at Pinchot Hall (my dorm) and we are told that we have to free climb it with no ropes.
I never had much trouble with the in class blue book format as my high school English, social studies, and literature classes had a similar format. My problem was being able to write fast and legible enough for them to read. My favorite was when an Art History prof would have one slide of an artist or architect that you had studied, but NOT that particular piece. You had to make an educated guess and explain why you thought it was done by that artist. If you got the artist wrong, you could still get a good score on that slide if you made a strong case. Always thought that was a good measure that you understood the material.
Speaking of AI, has anyone else noticed that autocorrect seems to be getting worse? For example, the Borg kept trying to change understood to undergood, even though it would underline it in red.

The name of the school on the diploma has always been what matters.
I have a similar but I get a letter saying I did not graduate from high school or college and need to repeat a class and I go to take test and am thinking what the hell I am already a doctor and I am on call tonight. There never is resolution
It’s the name on the front of the diploma that matters, not the name on the back of the diploma.
