JJ Johnson
I agree. There’s a lot of players I really liked but JJ was my favorite player partly b/c I was in school then. My next favorite is Simmons. After the games he would come outside the stadium and talk to and take pictures with the fans. I always enjoyed that personal side of him.

He was good. I’ll never forget the 2 minute drill at the end of the Memphis State game pulling it out. And played well in the Sun Bowl. Bowls were a rarity in those days.
He was no doubt good (consensus All SEC in 74) but his lasting legacy to me is that he and Bob Tyler led us from a very dark time to a rare time when we could feel good about State football .

And one of only 5 SEC POY (sorry Bruce) recipients in our history, previous was Art Davis. The head coaching thing didn't do a lot for his overall legacy but he took a swing and was the man in the arena. Hard to argue anyone's been more true maroon over the past nearly 60 years.
(split the POY award into offense/defense in 2002 and Bookie was the AP's in 2023 for our "6th")

Also Kent Hull, for a personal reason.

We were pledge brothers. On the night of our initiation, I got hit some way and had a tooth chipped. Big ole Kent told me to hang onto his belt loop and they won't touch you the rest of the night. I did, and they didn't. I'll never forget that gentle giant, just a great guy.

Eugene is the head coach at Brandon now. I'm hearing good things.
I've known Eugene personally for a number of years . He's a good man and great roll model . The only thing about Gene you wouldn't like if you meet him is his handshake , the guy has a grip like vise and if you aren't prepared he'll make you flinch LOL

Omarr and Jeffery cause they are home town boys and were hell on wheels. But also DD because he was superman on a ****** team. But damn Fitz was the toughest mfer to ever wear the maroon and white.

The player that comes first to mind of favorite memories is Michael Davis. I can still see him front and center on the wishbone. He would hit that hole and get through the line and then he was gone.

At a personal level I always enjoyed being around Johnnie Cooks. He always had a smile on his face and was damn funny.

Wow, too many to name but since no one mentioned, DD Lewis, Walter Packer and Don Smith were favorites indeed. Gotta add Tommy Pharr also.
