I was thinking the other night while they were struggling with Cape Verde: Argentina misses Angel Di Maria out on the pitch. He was always the heart and soul of their side, right through the '22 WC title run, before retiring. They just seem to missing that "something" out there.

Not so fast...Argentina just scored to make it 2-1 on a gorgeous cross from Messi to Amero for the goal, which the keeper almost made another sensational save on. These last 15 minutes are going to be nuts.

Messi scores!! Was just about to post that I agree with your comment that it has seemed they're missing something, but after those two goals, who knows. There's still no way Argentina should've ever gone down 2-0 to Egypt (and it should've been 3-0).

Just when I think this WC can't get any better or more dramatic, we get Argentina's miracle comeback over Egypt scoring 3 goals in 15 minutes (from the 80th minute onward) to win. Still think Egypt got robbed on the disallowed Egyptian goal.

Do you think it was a bad call (ie, there was no foul), or you don't like the rule? Seemed like the correct use of VAR to me...it was a missed foul in the change of possession that led to the Egypt disallowed goal. That's one of the times they're supposed to use VAR.

Agree. I think he - and others - are more upset because it was at the other end of the field (which, IMHO, shouldn't matter). People then complaining that Salah got clipped in the penalty area which didn't get called. Looking at the replay IMHO it was a solid "no call" on that play.

BTW - the production team in Vancouver gets an A+++ playing "The Macarena" during the hydration break with about 50,000 Colombian fans in the stands!

Like in the Turkey game …our Goalie is not good.
Three Achilles heels that worried me heading in…Goalkeeping, our back line, and Pulisic’s durability. All three were exposed tonight.

We pretty much met my expectations for the tournament…round of 16, and lost to a better team. There was a time when I worried if we’d even do that, but disappointing now that we made it here that we didn’t go further.

Looking ahead…A few guys will age out, but most of the core is back (though it’ll be one final run in 2030). Need to find a an upgrade at goalkeeper, need to lock down Banks, need a Ream replacement (see Banks comment), need Luna to keep developing, would be great if Musah finds it again, etc.

We play Belgium in Seattle 10 times and we likely beat them 4-5 of them…but Belgium really upped their game from what we’ve seen, and we didn’t match it. Tillman played really well, but we needed more to match that level.

Will be interested to see who is coaching us in 2027, but Gold Cup only 11 months away.
this.
Goalkeeping is atrocious

Colombia are the kings and queens of diving. Noticed it for years, both the men’s and women’s teams.

I didn't think it was enough for a foul. Minimal shirt tug and barely stepping on the side-front of the foot, which is being lifted. Not enough for me to call a foul, especially in that situation - should need to be a significant, obvious foul. No issue with VAR going back to the possession change, which they're supposed to do.

We need to get out of Concacaf! It’s an awful federation to prepare for the World Cup.

There are 3 small countries in northern South America that are in mConcacaf (Guyana, etc) snowy can’t we be in CONMEBO

we may not qualify as much but when we do we will have been better prepared!

Now with 48 teams we will always qualify in Concacaf barring an absolute collapse with our team - same with Mexico and Canada.

we won’t be battle tested like they are in UEFA and CONMEBOL.

it’ll never happen but I wish it would

You prep by playing more challenging friendlies.

Friendly's are just that. Not real prep.

Add 4 S American teams to the weak Gold Cup - not a team like Qatar.

Add S American teams to Nations League

Keep gettting invited to Copa

those are real tests
You tell that to the USWNT and Brazil. They played two high intensity brawls err friendlies a few weeks before the men’s WC.

I think you’re spot on - our guys can’t have their first big game experience be in the elimination rounds of the WC every 4 years - especially when our opponents will have Champions League and Euro experience.

Maybe not right away, but it’s undeniable that we’re slowly starting to produce more world class players. I’m excited to see what we are in 2030 with the core just barely past their primes and the young upgrades just hitting theirs - but they’ll need experience.

It’s a long shot, but it would certainly be amazing if Gio can somehow get his body to a serviceable level.

Unique having 2 of the best teams go at it

Not your typical friendly

schedule us vs Portugal in a friendly and they won’t really care and prob send a B team - so different feel than what you describe

Yep that's why Belgium & Portugal brought most of their starters in March when they played the USMNT.

Uh,,,, this was pre World Cup games together et the teams ready - again, not a regular friendly

I'm talking about post World Cup and until next World Cup (including those last few games to get ready)

Concacaf qualifying sucks .
Gold cup sucks
Nations league sucks

If you sprinkle in friendly’s that don’t matter vs England, Columbia, Portugal they won’t help us as nothing is on the line 2 -3 yrs before World Cup

We have to find a way to get in competitive matches against better teams every near and I don’t know how to do that easily unless they can create mini tourneys where teams send their best and teams play for a cup - probably no room on calendars for it with UEFA teams for sure

I get it, you're the RutgersAl of the soccer threads now because of how they lost on Monday.

Mildone was the most knowledgeable poster on soccer that this board has ever seen IMO. It would have been interesting to hear his perspective on the Balogun suspension/non-suspension. And lots of other stuff.
He's just one of many posters that never made the jump to this new version of the board.
Sad.
He knows way more about soccer tactics and coaching than anyone I know (he has the highest coaching certification level for non-professionals) and even the guys we play with every week, most of whom played in college or in their home country's leagues (many are from South/Central America), respect his knowledge. FWIW he thought the Balogun red card was a bad call, but didn't think FIFA should have reversed it and especially not if it was under political pressure to do so, plus he was afraid all the attention would be an unwanted diversion for the US and would unnecessarily motivate Belgium even more and I think he was right on that - certainly something led to us playing with lack of focus and them playing balls to the wall. As I've mentioned before, he had already left the board before the new version, due to how this place is run, which is a common theme. Damn shame.

My counter-take…CONCACAF road qualifiers can be very good, high intensity tests for us. Gold Cup and Nations League games against the better teams in CONCACAF can be great prep (some of those Mexico title games in the different comps are brawls).

My issue is that we had our core playing together far too little over the past few years…injuries, guys needing rest, guys fighting for club spots and not wanting to miss training, etc.

Anyone else going through WC withdrawal today? First day without a game in weeks. Best TV in a long time. France-Morocco tomorrow. Can anyone stop the French?

If it was a bad call I think it should’ve been reversed. I don’t care how it got done tbh.

I don’t think this board is run any different then the old one. There just seems to be a lot less traffic. Not sure what you are trying to imply

You are the right the starting lineup we used was hardly ever together - I think Poch wanted guys to compete for spots but there is a down side to that

In the end we are where we’ve always been so not sure at all the needle has been moved last 18 months under him

However, I do think if he stays, which is unlikely, I do think we will be better in 4 years if he keeps working with a core group

we need to find a CB to play with Richards and we need a better goal keeper - not sure what we can do about that
