Second time somebody has mentioned him in the wrong position. Dude was a DOG Safety.
Yes a hybrid position where a player plays close to line a lot as both a linebacker and a db. He would be in my top 3 and not just an honorable mention if a pure linebacker.

Mawhinney? Unless I'm not remembering his output well - he never stood out to me.
He got name checked in The Blind Side on the tv broadcast when the Tuohy family was watching the 2003 Egg Bowl in the middle of a sunny day, yet another factual inaccuracy in that movie.

DD Lewis
Johnie Cooks

I can't disagree with the top 3. Honorable mention - Keo Coleman, Daniel Boyd, KJ Wright, Benardrick McKinney, Bookie Watson, Mario Haggan and I'm sure a lot more I'm not recalling.
You left out Ray Costict

Third-team All-American (1976)
First-team All-SEC (1976)
Second-team All-SEC (1975)
Mississippi State's career leader in tackles with 467

Somebody mentioned Keo Coleman. Either he or Marc Woodward - I think they played linebacker together - hit OM QB Tommy Luke in the Egg Bowl and it is still one of the best STRIKES I've ever witnessed. I was about 15 rows up and right on line....

I thought Luke was dead.

My top 3

Ray Costic is one all over the record books just before my time. He had highest single game tackle record too

I was ranking favorites. He played on a terrible team but short, slow white LBs always held a place in my heart. Plus the announcer had a way saying his name that was awesome
Would anyone know his name without the practice reports of lighting guys up? All I ever saw was him getting dragged or jumping on a pile late trying to get numbers.

Dude was a walk-on that had almost 200 tackles in 2 years. I want to say he led us in tackles 1 year. He played on 2 of the worst teams of my lifetime but gave effort. Further, he gave hope to all short, slow white boys that we could play LB!

Cooks and Lewis have to be on the list. But man were there a lot of good ones over the years. I don't know how you narrow it down.

I think Wright probably had the best pro career from what's left, so I'd go with him, then Haggan or McKinney (both of whom had decent pro careers too).

I remember him getting tackles after being dragged for 5 yards or coming in late to get half tackles after someone else stood someone up. I am getting old but I wouldn't say that he was one of the best all time or even the decade.

And he wasn't even one of the best LB on the team when Mario Haggan was on the same team.

I always liked Marc Woodard and Dwayne Curry.

Then you have Ed Smith who played that hybrid DE/LB position for us. If there's one thing MS produces, it's a lot of guys that can swap back and forth from DE and LB.
Kind of random but Ed Smith was my Uber driver for a late night flight into Memphis about 7-8 years back. Nice dude.

Half of his tackles came from his man dragging him for five yards and then tripping over his body.

He's the perfect representation of the Croom Error.

TJ Mawhinney did not play under Croom. He was a senior in 2003.
