Wife is out walking Bodhi tonight...on a leash, of course. She hits the back street and a German Sheppard is off leash in its yard. My wife is clear across the street. Bodhi starts barking (he loves other dogs) and this Sheppard darts across the street and goes after Bodhi. My wife's seconds away from kicking this dog when the owner finally wrangles her dog. My wife in fight or flight, but not yelling says, "Ma'am! My dog's back is all wet from your dog's mouth (not knowing if it's blood or saliva)" The lady yells back, "WELL! YOUR DOG IS ALWAYS BARKING AT MY DOG. You're just being rude!" and storms off. Jaw dropped, my wife claps back, "You should have yours on a leash!"

Dogs bark, no? If you live in a residential neighborhood and your dog isn't properly trained, it should be on a leash, no?

Dogs bark. My dog gets barked at all the time and has never charged another dog.

Dogs should be leashed if they're outside. GSD owner knows that.

GSD owner is the AH in this scenario. She should prob get a tether or a fence before the GSD mauls another dog or a kid.

And....I'm glad your wife and dog are ok!
Same!

We have another GSD on the same street, but the owner always leashes and tries to walk his late at night because it's a bit unruly. I was walking Bodhi late one night after a soccer match across town and we hadn't even left our driveway and that GSD tore up our driveway from behind the shrubs next to our driveway. Scared the bajesus outta me, but Alex (the owner) retracted that leash super fast and was so apologetic.

I was like, it's fine...we were hidden from each other. No ill intent. He thanked me for being understanding. The difference? Not only was his GSD leashed, the owner was apologetic and owned the fact his dog was/is the agressor.

The lady with the free roaming dog is the issue. No question.

Here in Florida, people will just shoot loose dogs that come at them. That lady is lucky.

It's important in that situation to yell "Friendly!" if your dog gets out of your yard, I've found.
But yah this kind of thing happens and folks can be rude about it. Glad no pup got hurt. Nice dog!

Everyone thinks their dog is friendly until it’s not.
That's true, socialization is important to understand how your dog will behave. Taking them to dog parks etc.
You kinda know your dog. I hat a pit bull who would never yield to other dogs. She wouldn't attack or bite but she never yielded, it sent some dogs into a tizzy. Her not yielding caused some dogs to get real aggressive, they had to have her show her belly.

Totally shocked you’d have a pit bull. Such a trashy person move

My daughter will walk her dog on the road through the local cemetery just for the reason that there will not be other dogs off leash there. Her dog (mutt) will not bat an eye at another dog unless she is rushed by one. Unleashed dog walkers, or owners who can’t keep them in their yard, are the scum of the earth.

Most towns have city ordinances requiring dogs to be on a leash if they aren't in their yard.
No Leash Lady is the A-hole and would be legally responsible for any damage her dog does to another dog.

My wife had a very similar experience walking our pitty/rotti mix. But it was our dog that snapped at (but thankfully missed) the off leash dog running towards it.
My wife was 95% certain that our dog was completely in road. I told her from now on to make sure to keep the dog in the middle of the street next time she walked past that house.

I never let our dogs off leash unless they are in a fenced in area.
I would never trust an invisible fence - too easy for a dog to run through the shock and moreso it doesn't keep other animals out.

Retractable leashes are not allowed by my city's leash ordinance for this type of situation, but it is never enforced.

Everyone thinks their dog is friendly until it’s not.
Friendly to humans doesn't always mean friendly to dogs.
And, dogs on leash can react different than if they weren't - we had one that was the sweetest dog to other dogs unless we were walking her on a leash. Severe leash anxiety.

You all could be azholes, but your neighbor is for sure. I am not sure why people think walking their dogs without leashes is acceptable, unless you are out in the country or it is like 5 am and you're somewhere where no one is around. Counterpoint is that if you leave your dog outside a lot and it is always barking, that is azholy. The neighbors across the street from us have several dogs that they leave out all of the time, and they bark and yip and bark and yip constantly. They live on a heavily walked corner lot backing up an elementary school, and have a ****** wire fence that their dogs can see through. Put up a privacy fence for fuks sake. I say this as someone who has two dogs who like to bark. We have a privacy fence and don't leave them outside though for extended periods of time.

It never occurred to me that there would be an ordinance against retractable leashes. Learn something new every day.
Yeah, every dog owner (if you are, awesome! If you aren't, why the heck not?) should be very familiar with their area's leading laws.

Even non-dog owners should have a cursory understanding of them in case there is ever an incident with a dog in public.

Ya, my neighbor had 2 dogs and then got married and 2 more dogs showed up, so now they have 4 dogs and if they're outside they are barking. It sucks *** if you just want to have a peaceful morning or afternoon outside in the garden or on the patio.

Not only am I getting barked at, but I have to listen to the owner yell at his dogs while they don't listen.

The only upshot is that for me they live across the street, so they only bark at me when I mow the lawn, get the mail, get out of my car, enter or exit my house. But I can hear them when I'm trying to get some backyard zen in the pool.

Bodhi does bark a lot, but we never let it go longer than 5 min and get his butt inside. We're hoping he grows out of some of it, AND we're working on training (trying to be responsible neighbors), but ya, we see people complaining about the all day yappers on our FB group all the time. People head off to work leaving their dog to bark for 8 straight hours.
