Ok but this was it. The future was here. We beat teams we should and couldn’t move any further than before. It was a failure. Want to be good, beat better. CP is the weakest star the US has ever had.

Part of that I am 100% convinced lies in FIFA's structure. We can't play in meaningful games like this because there are none to play in as a national team.

Europe gets the UEFA and South America gets the Copa America. When we reach the semi final it is almost always USA and Mexico against Panama, Canada, Costa Rica or Jamacia AND we are playing with our C team half time time.

Then you have Nations League which makes us play even MORE CONCACAF teams. We need more opportunities to play European, South American and African opponents.

Landon Donovan: PRIVLEDGE Is Why America Can't Produce Soccer Stars

Speak it from the rafters!

I see this in high school. All these kids play club and "win" at varying levels. Then they expect the high school coaches to bend over backwards that they are taking time to play for us over their club team. Like we should be rolling out the red carpet. Then when they don't play the culture is too negative because we are pushing them to be better.

And not just throwaway friendlies where either we get embarrassed and nobody wants to play us anymore, or they send their C team because nobody wants to play us............

Final worthless rankings...

Freese 4 -started so strong. Ended as bad as it could be.

Ream 4 - communication was poor and was beat out physically by a dude who looks like he is 10. His age really showed tonight.

Richards 4.5 - I'm so disappointed. He is our best centerback and he played poorly as well. Communication issues and failure to clear.

Freeman 5.5 - Got beat a few times, to much space others. Couldn't go forward and when he did he didn't get the ball.

Dest 3 - Holy crap... I love Dest. He is so fun on the ball. He couldn't dribble, pass, defend. Really not a great tournament for him.

Robinson 3.5 - Holy crap pt. 2. He's playing more forward than he did for Fulham but he had a very poor tournament. One of my favorite players on the team but his defending was bad, I can't think of a single 1v1 win and his touch was not where it needs to be.

Adams 5.5 - Workhorse but went MIA a lot tonight. Not all his fault. Just didn't get the ball on offense as we skipped the midfield a ton, especially in the 1st half.

McKennie 6 - might be the most consistent guy but couldn't find the ball either. Missed some opportunities on ball when he did have it. Did break up play and press well.

Tillman 7 - got the goal. Looked to be one of the only dangerous players. Just not enough tonight.

Pulisic 3 - injury or not... get the ball off your foot. Must develop more and he will get one, maybe two, more runs at this.

Balogun 6 - physical, played with heart. Made runs. Couldn't get on the ball.

Subs

Gio 5.5 - didn't turn the ball over as much as Dest. Absent from the game.

Berlhalter 6.5 - actually made a difference. He was a positive sub and a grumbled when he came on.

Pepi 5 - he keeps getting his name called and he keeps failing to produce.

Arfsetn NR - played less than 2 min

Wright NR - playes less than 2 min

Poch 5 - I mean, he can't be responsible for getting the players mentally ready for this. You should have wanted this more than any game. We weren't ready... his tactical changes weren't working though either.

Overall... I am sad, want to puke, want to punch a hole in the wall. I can't ever decide if the USMNT, Iowa football or Iowa basketball is my #1 favorite team. During a world cup it is always soccer.

My hope for the World Cup is that it inspires the next generation and that I am proud of the way they went out. I think we started both well and ended with a thud. The disastrous ending in every way possible sours the cup for me. I love this team and am sad that many players will be done despite shaky performances.

What I hope to see:

If you aren't getting regular minutes in the top 5 leagues in Europe (England, France, Spain, Italy, Germany) go to the MLS. seriously... grow the sport here. The next player who goes to the Netherlands better be the last. We are having a major problem with our players there, the league isn't that good. Tillman is the only player who I feel has gotten better by playing there and now can't get minutes in Germany. Our boys playing in Scotland? Find somewhere else. You play on the best team that hardly ever loses there.

I want to be clear. The top 5 leagues are head and shoulders better. We need guys there but they have to play.

What do we need?

Center backs. Banks will make the choice between Germany or the US. Both went out in early knockout stages. He has automatic playing time and Poch should be getting him in the next friendly. Richards will still be there but who else if Banks fails? CCV? Probably to old. Miles Robinson is a shell of himself. McKenzie will be 31 and looked poor against Turkey.
This continues to be the biggest issue for 30 years and never seems to get fixed.

Goalkeeper went from strength to major weakness. Not one of the two that played looked good. We need someone to step up. Three MLS keepers and the two that got in looked like spazes.

Depth... absent. Gio had a great goal. Berlhalter looked fine. Nobody else looked remotely ready.

I'm assuming Poch will not be back. He wants to coach club. I'm not sure who the next coach is but it better work.

Overall... it is fresh but it is a deep wound. I hope we can host again in my lifetime but I doubt I will ever get to see the US play in person in a World Cup. That makes me more sad...

I would give this world cup a final grade of a C. Got to where we should have but looked awful doing it today.
Im not a soccer expert but it looked like our guys were playing on their back foot most of the night. Very tentative and no urgency. The first 3 goals were meek giveaways imo. We got lucky to score the one goal imo. Not a good recipe but maybe Belgium just has better players across the board?

We need to socialize soccer more. Hell, we need to do it with most all youth sports. The only team sport we dominate in that the world cares about is basketball, and that’s because of pick up game culture.

Good write up.

I am of the belief the best thing for the USMNT program would be never letting Christian pulisic put on a jersey again. We need to figure out answers to the questions that dont involve him because the ones that do fail miserably. The guy is a Robin not a batman.

That play by the goalie shows what tier of athlete USA soccer attracts.

football and basketball are king in USA.
Yep. The best athletes in the US choose football, basketball, baseball and hockey. That's why they dominate or are near the top in international competition in those sports.

The leftover athletes play soccer. Just the way it is. Last night was further proof

Two things-
1. Does MLS have soccer acadamies to develop the next generation of players?
2. Didn't Poch sign a 4 year extension taking him through WC in 2030?

Yes all MLS clubs have academies and I assume most of the USL clubs have them too. No decision on Poch yet. I think he said in the post-game press conference that they will talk about it in the next couple of weeks

There are many ways to be good and certainly more grass roots would help. I love joga bonito but the ugly truth brazil does less with more talent than most. Germany and Japan are consistently good based entirely off systems. We lack an identity, whatever shade that may end up being.

Tyler Linderbaum is considered one of the better athletes in the NFL, he wouldnt have lasted 20 minutes last night. Are there some DBs and WRs that might make the decision to play football instead of soccer, sure.

If you want to watch an atheltic person look incredibly unathletic watch a basketball player try to play soccer. I played with 1 guy that was great at both and he chose soccer in college. He had offers to play D2 basketball as a 5'6 point guard. He is/was one of the quickest guys I ever met. Baseball...... you think a sport of a bunch of dudes standing around waiting to do a hand eye task is a good athlete for soccer......Hockey players is a good prototype but it may be the one sport in america more elite than soccer.

You want to make anybody look like a poor athlete, ask them to try and pitch or hit a baseball.

Not sure what your point is.

The best athletes in the USA don’t play soccer and never have. It’s why a country of 300,000,000 does poorly on the world stage.

Belgium didn't dominate last night because they were better athletes. They dominated because they are better soccer players.
Post match commentary suggested that Belgium put their best young athletes on the pitch with the idea just rush USA defensively and see what happens. Belgium also left their 2 best players on the bench until well into the 2nd half. Better soccer players for sure but don't sell on the idea they weren't better athlestes.

I'd say that plan worked.

Interesting take

Landon said pretty much the same thing. His parents wouldn't have been able to afford travel ball, so the US would have missed out on its top scorer. We're fortunate (for now) our tuition is about $2500 per year + travel and uniform kits. My son is at the N2L level, so we'll see what happens going forward. ...band aint much cheaper. His dadgum trumpet was over $2k.

How on earth do poor people support their kids. :(

Right there with you. My youngest plays ECNL, league fees are similar to you. I imagine uniforms also. The traveling is where it runs up considerably. Based out of Omaha, we have 1 other ECNL team and it’s standing on their last leg. Had a bunch of girls from that team at tryouts this year. Back to being limited on teams, we are in motels for the majority of games. Spanning from St. Louis to Minneapolis and Lincoln to Cedar Rapids for league teams they at least try to meet up in the middle. Really happy with who my daughter has as a coach and as a personal trainer. They both focus on the basics and excelling at them. It’s quite a bit to spend but also have a kid that puts so much into getting better in her own. She constantly touches the ball. I can justify that way. But the money being spent goes up every year. Not looking forward to club fees and travel when she’s U19

I 100% believe trumps narcissism ****** it all up. USA is not better than Belgium, not even close, but they had the talent, momentum and all things going to beat them. trumps fifa distraction came at an awful time, USA needed to be perfect and it just casted this ****** shadow over what could’ve been a historical shift in US men’s soccer. Now we are left with an embarrassing exit and no real progress to show.

Also before I get attacked by the trump boys, let me say that I had no issue with him asking fifa to look into it. I would expect any head of state to do so in this type of situation. It was the usually ******** he spewed to the media. He made it about him and look what “I” did. Just shut your ******* mouth for once. He made us the punching bag and bad guys once again.

Not a fan of Belgium trolling USA after the win. Seem like bad sports as winners. It would have been like if Harbaugh trolled Iowa after Michigan kicked our ballsack in during the BIG championship game a few years back. We get it, your team was better, and you didn't like Trump calling the FIFA president. But take the high road and enjoy the lopsided win. Now I would very much like them to lose their next match.

Both teams use C teams for friendlies to "test depth"... I hate it.
Then the U.S. needs to stop being "friendly" and send their A team. Beat the sh** out of France's C team and dare them to send their best........

I know it won't end well for us, but again how else do you convince these f***ers to let us sharpen our own skills playing actual top level competition?

Only way to do so is to insult their factually fragile egos. 😉

SIAP...the Belgium soccer players doing the "Trump jerkoff" dance in the post game celebration is funny as shiit!

Trump has again made America the laughingstock. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Trump isnt the reason our goalkeeper looked like a mentally challenged 6th grader who had spent all day huffing gas while attempting to clear a ball. Trump isnt the reason a 40 year old center back got worked for 90 minutes including but not limited to getting posterized on a header. If we would have won you would be here bitching about how it was tainted due to trump. I dont like that he got involved either but your political nonsense is the rantings of a b1tchy man. Our "best player" is made from glass.
