It's pretty crazy. I saw the replay, both live speed and slow motion. Granted, I don't watch a ton of soccer, but I've seen red cards and the fouls seem pretty egregious. The play in question seemed extremely mild for a red card. I can understand our fans finding it absurd. But obviously, if the shoe was on the other foot and it was a player for Belgium, we'd feel the same as the right now.

First off, he should DEFINITELY not been given a red call, it was an awful call, secondly (I am glad they did) I heard in World Cup play you can’t get this overturned??

Cristiano Ronaldo got a red card in the 61st minute of their WC qualifier. That came with a 3-game suspension, which would have had him missing WC cup games. FIFA reduced the penalty to one game so he didn't end up missing any WC games.

This is effectively the same thing.

Maybe a little phone call from DJT helped? Whatever it was wrong and it should have been overturned regardless. And Mark Kelly is a disgrace to this country. I hate to say that about a former astronaut but he is. Undermines America whenever he can.

Getting it right is what FIFA should be concerned about and having the best players on the field for both teams is the right call for a World Cup match if there was any doubt about the red card.

It is not unprecedented but it feels kind of suspect.
Although I thought the red card was harsh, I want us to beat the snobby Europeans without any help!
Ultimately I hope we win big either way.

Yeah, there's no way to escape the optics with us being the host country and all. I'm not a soccer expert, but I thought red cards were supposed to egregious, intentional kind of fouls.

Not always intentional, it can be for a disregard of your opponents safety. That in itself is left to interpretation. If every disregard of safety or rules were red cards there would be no central or south American teams with more than 6 players left at the end of any game.

I don't know enough about soccer to know if it was a bad call or not. Everyone seems to have an opinion on that though.

I am not really interested enough to sit down and watch more than a few mins here and there of a match. I catch the highlights on the news.

I did hear a college ref (or a man who claimed to be one) call into a Sirius program this morning and he claimed he didn't really disagree with the call that much. But, he's just another person with an opinion.

I know I don't want politicians getting involved in calling sports leagues when they don't like calls though. That's for certain. I think there was a governor a few years ago that threatened the NCAA or something along those lines over the playoffs or something.

I don't get politicians meddling in sports. All the talk in Europe is no doubt about Trump asking FIFA to review the red card for Balogun.

Agreed, dont like the optics. But just watched an interview where they talked about Renaldo getting the same "suspension of the suspension" treatment just a few weeks ago.

Imo, what's good for the goose, etc. But if so, FIFA seems as legit as the NCAA now.

I think the President shouldn’t have intervened. Especially one from a host country. FIFA
made their decision. It’s their operation. The call to the president of FIFA will have implications on what happens in the future. The word I’ll use is inappropriate.

Our Board of Trustees was famous for getting involved in sports for decades. I know of at least 2 state level politicians that tried to get involved in our athletic department back in the Brad Scott days.

I even had a radio station owner tell me years ago (back in the mid 1990s) that someone (he would not name them) from our board called him up and tried to get him to carry our football and basketball games. This was his claim- I obviously had no way of confirming it. The station owner told me this person was trying to apply some political pressure and he didn't appreciate that at all. He offered to carry our football games but that wasn't enough for this person, and it caused some real hard feelings with the station owner because he felt he was being pressured. I have no idea if that was true but that's what he told me. (The reason he told me that as I had reached out to him as a fan to encourage him to carry our football games)

I haven't even looked it up but didn't the florida governor try to get involved in the FSU playoff thing a few years ago? I don't even remember at this point I just knew he talked about some stuff and was trying to get involved.

After gambling became acceptable in sports there aren't any pure sports left.
FIFA is on par with th NBA , NCAA and all the others.
Enjoy watching the match and cheer for The USA.
