I've been driving on vacation today. So many thoughts today and I enjoy reading all your thoughts.

#1- Flo Balogun's red card has me feeling so conflicted. FIFA is a corrupt piece of crap. There are 4 guys that should have been suspended and all had their suspensions lifted. I still don't believe that Balo's red was deserved, it was wrong to give it to him.

That said, I HATE how this went down. You inform both teams the day before the game that this was going to happen? Stinks of corruption. I hate feeling like the bad guy and the world was *slightly* starting to respect this squad and in one move everyone hates us again and worse yet, thinks we are cheaters.

Why this bothers me so much is because of a few reasons.

I don't like my favorite team being looked at in a bad light. I had a hard time with Iowa football and the racism thing, even though I knew it was BS. I hate seeing all the negativity. Ultimately, it is what it is and there is certainly a bunch of Euro, Afro, Middle Eastern whining going on but they hated us no matter what.

Second, I would feel a lot better if they just said the refs effed up VAR. Watched in slow mo (which is not permitted for fouls) and since they improperly used VAR for this play, it is being rescinded. That's all I needed to hear. Instead it's crap reasons.

Third, Balogun handled this so well. The team was ready to move on and play for him. If we win, I want noting taken away from the rest of the guys in the squad. There have been fabulous performances by Wes, Tillman, Adams. I don't want anything to overshadow what they have done as a unit. Poch has done really well as a manager.

Fourth, timing is everything. I eluded to this before but why wait until now? It needed to be done within 24 hrs so everyone would prepare.

Short version: I hate being the bad guy but I don't care how they ultimately feel. It's best on best and I want us to win.

#2 Brazil vs Norway was a great game for Norway and kind of gave me confirmation bias. I think Brazil is really in an interesting situation. Their creativity is gone. Joga Bonito is gone. I think they are left figuring out who they want to be? Do they want to be like Paraguay, Chile and Argentina and win hack fests to compete or do they recreate their old style? For Norway, Haaland is freaking awesome. Most thought the round of 32 was the max and get are going to the quarters. Their keeper doesn't get regular minutes in club and he was so good today. (I did pick Norway over Brazil in my bracket... but missed the next)

#3 Mexico and England. Holy crap. Mexico kicked the piss out of them... and lost. England had nothing in the tank and almost got CONCACAFed. I've never seen them have to defend like that before. 5 shot for a team making infinity dollars. Mexico just couldn't find the last goal. I have to give total credit to Pickford. He was my MOTM and that's even with the phenomenal performance by Bellingham.

Yup. Wemby entered the playoffs the hero and left the villian. As a Spurs fan, I HATE it. I understand the perception, but still hate it. Didn't help going up against Brunson. I gained a ton of respect for that guy. ...unlike King Flopper SGA and Capt Punchable Face, Chet.

I digress....back to soccer. ⚽

I'm super excited for Norway England and will be pulling for Norway. Haaland is a blast to watch!

Not the same.
It kinda is.

That poster is merely being sarcastic in that political pressure has been used to influence the overturned red card for the American player.

As we said previously, everything Trump touches turns to shiit.
After this circus, many Americans won't feel badly if the US loses vs Belgium.

Personally, I'm not watching a single minute, but I'll be around for the convo on Monday.
In a way...this is like the Iran War...most Americans don't want Iran to win, they just don't like the way the US manipulates things. Here, people won't be openly rooting for Belgium, but they won't feel bad if the US loses.

All that is true…but they screwed up and there was no walking it back once red card was issued. There was no appeal process. That is what is “slimy”. They just are now ignoring the rules completely to make this exception
Thank you President Trump!!!

I am worried the fates are against us today the way the map is amazingly shaping up with Morocco, Spain or Portugal, France, England and Norway in. Belgium wins and you practically have a continuous line on Atlantic from North Africa to Norway in quarterfinals (bypassing the Netherlands and Denmark) with England. Let’s break that dream up today.

Watch Jordan’s left arm … that will leave a mark.

I am old enough to remember FSU’s star pitcher in 1999 injuring his knee in the dog pile after winning the game to go to Omaha. He still gutted it out and surprised everyone by starting in the national championship game (back then it was a one game affair) with a brace. He was solid but not quite good enough and we lost 6-5 to Miami. Without his arm earlier in College World Series and not 100 percent in final game (he ended up having a torn acl iirc) you could make a case the 1999 FSU baseball team lost a chance at a natty due to celebrating.

Someone who knows the rules better than me please explain to me like I’m in 5th grade why that’s a penalty on Kane? The ball is in front of him. The Mexican player comes from the side/back and gets his leg in between the ball and Kane’s leg.

Anyone?

You'll have to explain to me why the red was given. The Brit dude was making a play on the ball and caught the Puto on the calf. Foul? Hardly.
The player Kane fouled was Brian Gutierrez, born and raised in Berwyn, Illinois, came up through the Chicago Fire Academy to the first team, and was on the USMNT until it became clear we weren’t going to take him to the World Cup but his parents’ nation would. It was a savvy move to get his leg in there to control the ball before Kane’s clearance. Kane never made contact with the ball so it was correctly given a PK. And I will always be down with Gutierrez. I also love that Mexico needed a kid who’s born and raised in Illinois to help them against England. He’s a hard worker, humble, and gave me two of the best moments last season in hitting goals to qualify for the playoffs and then win in the first round (though he did blow a PK next round which essentially did us in)…

Brit goalie was the player of that game.
Jordan Pickford. And yeah, he’s just built different than any English goalkeeper in my lifetime. Some of his saves with Everton have been unreal. Huge advantage to have a guy who’s basically as good at going up through traffic to pluck crosses as an NFL receiver.

Found out yesterday my wife not only knows who Haaland is, but she's a fan. Says he's a "great athlete" & she's part Norwegian & was rooting for them. But I make one comment about some female Argentinian fans & I'm the creep.

The US aren’t the bad guys. You can argue FIFA is but the US had nothing to do with the decision. It was a bogus RC that was rescinded. That’s how it should work, not some bureaucratic bs rule that robs a player of his WC experience and a team from their top goal scorer.

No, the Brit deserved the card. Balogun did not.
I disagree with Brit red. I agree with Flo not deserving.

Another question- Why is it a red if he makes a play on the ball (I thought he touched it) and then makes contact? I admit I am a novice, but what if he moves the ball and then makes contact. Still a red?

I am going to guess you haven’t played or watched much soccer? Tackles like the one England put in are absolute bone snappers. You simply cannot let them happen because if a guy plants his leg at that moment it’s a severe break.
