…..I’ve had this theory for a while that belts and straps for deadlifts and squats are a bad thing, as they mask some core and grip weakness in the pursuit of strength. I used them when I was younger and have some injuries to show for it. Nowadays if my grip and core limit me, I let them. If I can’t hold it and if my back can’t handle it, my thoughts are I shouldn’t be lifting it. What say you?

When I first started lifting, I had a guy who was a “trainer” who tried convince me that functional strength is so important and to use kettlebells and free weights in certain motions etc… I’ll just say this, a year ago I was weaker than this individual but currently I am 3 times stronger. Did I focus on functional strength? NOT AT ALL. I think too many people way overthink things. Get in the gym and start moving weight around focus on getting your protein from pure plant based sources.

You will quickly see such a massive difference in strength and endurance if diet is done properly. You will pass everyone by very quickly and while others are pulling muscles and getting back injuries you’ll calmly blow right by them.

If you want to overthink anything, overthink what kind of plant protein you eat daily. I move 50,000-60,000 lbs around every day and don’t get sore or tired at all. No injuries and feel great. Good luck!

You only need a belt for near maximal lifts or if you have underlying issues that a belt helps alleviate. That being said, I don't use one at all now because my days of going heavy are over. As far as straps, I don't use them until grip strength fades. I never use them on deadlifts but I do use them on heavy shrugs; also I do very heavy wheelbarrow work and pulling it backwards like a rickshaw will fatigue your grip quickly, so i'm not going to limit my workout based on my grip failing.

Do you use a belt when lifting heavy every day and never getting sore or tired?**

I grew up in the wear a belt to save your back era. Took 25ish years off. It feels odd not using a belt.

Makes sense. I’m overly sensitive about my low back, for good reason. I’ve also heard of people ripping biceps with a hook grip on deadlift.

I don’t use them. My injuries are always for small ******** muscles I don’t work enough, and they sideline me for months. I have a tennis elbow injury that has been nagging me for 6 months and have had to only do serious lifts with lower body since. My core isn’t a limiter but my grip has been, and it has cost me when I ignored it

and I need to stop trying to go so heavy because that’s a big part of it as I’m getting older

That’s amazing you were able to get back in the gym after 25 years away. I quit for about 3 years after I stopped playing baseball and man it was difficult to get back in it.

Unfortunately, **** happens. Could be a result of people trying to pull with their arms instead of letting them hang too. As far as the back goes, if you feel instability don't ignore it.

When you dead lift the belt needs to be around the upper part of your stomach. When you squat the belt needs to be around the lower stomach above the waist. You don't need a belt for anything else if you do you are doing it wrong. Gloves and straps are for pussies.

Do reverse curls and wrist extension exercises to inflame the **** out of that tendon for your tennis elbow. Forces blood flow to the tendon for healing.

It was pretty easy when my life insurance agent explained the reason my policy premium doubled was because their projections showed 90% chance paying out in the next 3 years.

When my shoulders and wrist start hurting, I don't lay off. I take creatin monohydrate for a month. Your body will hold water, and fluid builds up in the joints giving you extra cushion and you can continue to work out while it heals. Pain will go away. I had a NP who is a body builder told me about it, and it works

I've heard of ripping your bicep with mixed grip, hook grip hurts like heck but protects the bicep.
Yeah I said that wrong. I use double hook grip. I meant to say a mixed grip. Bicep pointing forward, is what I hear was bad.

I had an inflamed bicep for years, from doing over hand pull ups. Chins were fine. Who can explain it.

90% poor diet and 10% being weak, that’s about as simple/direct as it can be put into words.

I think I messed up by not doing deadlifts as a teenager. Left the back exposed while I was doing ego lifts.

What is the pain? I had a 17ed shoulder forever from throwing batting practice too hard 7 years ago. I pushed blood to it like @grinnindawg said and it healed. A lot of cross grain massage and getting back to military press.
Some type of rotator cuff tendonitis. I need to stop incline pressing for a couple of weeks but I can’t stop. yea throwing batting practice is a risky maneuver.

It’s funny, when I wasn’t lifting heavy, I had all types of tendinitis. But I did a lot of yoga, and I had to train the body to move correctly again, and strengthen all the out-of-sync joints. Now that I’ve started lifting heavy I don’t have any pain, but I’m very careful, ie this thread. Again I did everything wrong as a teenager and 20s ego lifter. Mid 40s now.

I actually developed a weird right shoulder imbalance due to lifting bench too heavy in my 20s. It’s just now starting to go away due to slow progression but the tendency is there, I have to fight against it.

I take collagen peptides, glucosamine chondroitan, turmeric and ginger powder, fish oil, and that works pretty well for joint health. But in your late 40s 50s, muscle is not the problem, joint health is. Have To modify how you lift. prioritize health.

I popped my bicep lose bowling not lifting. The doctor looked at me and knew I lifted heavy and said it was a time bomb waiting to go off. I do not do preacher curls. I don't dead lift. I do belt squats (cable squats) now. It's plates on a vertical sled with a cable that pulls it up and the cable is hooked to a belt that is strapped around your waist. I am getting up in age also I have a plate, four screws in my ankle along with arthritis in the knee. Squats are best exercise to build your leg muscles. I wish I could still do them.

Your shoulders are good if you still bench, my knees and ankles are good I no longer squat. I use a neutral grip and rep the hell out of moderately heavy incline dumbbells but can no longer flat bench. Took up road biking outside and alternate cardio with weights every other day. working out is a healthy addiction and exercise is the best medicine for stress.

Its true. If you want to be sore constantly, age horribly, have high blood pressure, be at risk of heart attack and stroke, tire down easily… keep ingesting animal products. It’s like putting gum into your insides.

When you see people hunched over and winded, sore, etc… it’s because of awful blood flow, inflammation, etc… a DIRECT result of animal products.

Don’t ask the doctor, they don’t have any more nutritional training than your local garbage collector.

All protein comes from plants in its purest state. Animal protein is more dense but extremely inferior, recycled and absolute horrible at building muscle/strength. It also contains so many horrible components it will make your head spin.

It’s why all yall are tired, broken down and sore. I guarantee most of yall have all kinds of other problems too but many won’t admit it.

I know my strength. I hit max this morning actually. Feeling better and more strong as I age.

Even if you want to think in extremely simple terms which is probably extremely beneficial for you... A silverback gorilla is 10-20x stronger than most humans. They have become this over many many generations on solely a vegan diet. Carry on with your soreness and broken down pity party. 🤣🤣🤣

This has been my problem over the past five years (since getting married). I’ll get over one nagging injury, lift hard for six months, and develop another one. Strained a back muscle moving a fat fn patient at work and that took nearly a year to recover from. Bicep tendinitis, tennis elbow, impinged shoulder syndrome.. my legs have never been stronger tho.
