He brings a unique skill set to the roster that we were lacking - a true PG who can handle the ball well, understands pace and changing speeds and is adept at using hesi's and crossovers to breakdown defenders and create space for his shots. He has a solid pull-up midrange jumper and is a creative finisher in the paint with floaters and layups. He is a good passer and gets teammates involved. Not a great shooter from 3 but can hit if left open.
He was very successful in the Adriatic League averaging 14.3 points & 7.3 assists with a 49.5% FG%, 33.3% from 3 and just 68% from FT line. He shot 56.2% on 7.5 2-point attempts per game and 33.3% on 3.1 3-point attempts per game.
Defense is a weakness and there are questions whether he has the strength to play well in the physical college game. He was a non-factor last season at Illinois after a lot of expectations. He never got things going at Illinois, arriving on campus in the final week of August. Then he was not cleared as eligible by the NCAA until the end of October. Then he hurt his hamstring, missed the first 4 games and never found a steady role with the team as freshman PG Keaton Wagler blew up and became an All-American and the 5th pick in the NBA Draft.
As I mentioned a few weeks ago, the key for him at Seton Hall is getting him on campus this summer and giving him time to learn Sha's system and get acclimated to his new teammates. Unfortunately that is a question mark. He was a late addition to the Serbian National Team who is playing to qualify for the 2027 FIBA World Cup. He did not make the game roster so I'm not sure if he is still working out with the team. They play Bosnia tomorrow then they have 2 exhibitions 8/20 & 8/23. Hopefully, he is free from the National team and can get on campus ASAP.
We have so many guards on the team but Petrovic is the only one with pure PG skills. I think he can definitely carve out a meaningful role, especially if Jones and others struggle seizing the PG job. At worst, he provides depth at an important position. I like the pickup and will like it more if he's on campus quickly.
