It’s all really sad… so many of our fans are singing the tune “why are we Mississippi state? Why can’t we have anything good? Etc etc etc…” well look no further to how stupidly we deploy resources and how incompetent our administration is. This isn’t a situation of being in some obscure poor little state… does that stop Ole Miss? NOPE. We CHOOSE to invest in the dumbest things that do absolutely NOTHING to improve our school. But it feels great winning at checkers! Everyone is missing out I tell you!

Furthermore, the meaningless stuff we are pouring resources into we aren’t even doing that good in! Lemonis did win our only NC in baseball in 2021 which I’m thankful but we are middle of the road at best in SEC. Even if we won every national championship in baseball for next 10 years it would still be a giant waste of money that is doing nothing to improve MSU in the grand scheme of things. The numbers I posted in this thread clearly show that.

Let me explain it to you in terms you can understand.. baseball has lost over 1MM a year since 2011. We have operated in the red every year every season for the last 15 years. And before that it’ was breaking even or needing supplemental income from other sports. Now add in the ridiculous amount of debt we are carrying around for the new DNF and your talking a financial burden of over 85 million in a loss in a sport that can’t make money or revenue to support itself
Why is there an assumption that redirecting baseball money to football actually moves the needle much at all? We play in he SEC. Who would we surpass if we did that? If we increased out spending on football by 50%, does it seem likely that would place us any higher in the SEC hierarchy?

How does Ole Miss do well? It’s not like they are in Austin, Texas and MSU is in pelahatchie… we probably get an $80 million dollar cash injection from the SEC every year. We just aren’t smart with it… AT ALL

The biggest enemy to progress at MSU is our administration who invest in the dumbest things AND the people who encourage them to do so. These people will attempt to fool you as well. We give x number of dollars to MSU to invest in baseball… see we care more about MSU than others. No actually you don’t. If you truly cared about MSU flourishing you would rather donations be invested in a much faster growing women’s basketball with 5-10 times the reach or football/basketball. It’s simple math and being smart.

And to answer your question if we took an extra 6MM a year and invested in football, yes that would be extra NIl, extra resources to off field staff, and extra money for coaches. Had we invested more into football in 2018, we wouid have been able to build the IPF and facilities upgraded to DWS at that time. Small thinking saying if we took resources from baseball and thinking it wouldn’t help in football.

I think a few of you are way overestimating the impact sports has on people’s college decision. All of us on this board love college sports. That just isn’t the case with most people in the country anymore. And it has never been the case outside the South. My kids are grown, but if we were looking at schools again, sports wouldn’t even be on the list of top 50 things to consider. Clearly, they weren’t then either since both of them went to State!
It has been seen over and over the more successful football the more money comes in and student population increases. Bill Snyder at Kansas State, Florida State, Alabama, Ole Miss now. I am sure there are many others. It just makes people interested in visiting when they see students having fun while in college at games. It is not the specific reason to attend, but opens people up to be interested in visiting. I am in Colorado and highly ranked high schools here have many students go South to college wanting that experience. Most visit Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida and Ole Miss. State is never on their list. That is fine, but some alumni would like us to be forward thinking. I know there is another group that likes things the way they are. That is why this discussion comes up so often. Two different views and experiences.

You mentioned Ole Miss: well, they are just as good at baseball while being decent at men’s and women’s basketball at the same time they are supporting Football at a high level. Now, either they have a lot more millionaire supporters than State or they have mortgaged their entire university to the hilt to be good at athletics. It has to be one or the other. They are not doing it with rank and file fans who give a $100 per year!

A lot can be said about this in my view. We have the worst coaches I ever recall at MSU. I think a great leader is crucial. If we have a leader who is dumb, overweight, sloppy and undisciplined… how can we demand pure excellence from our fans and MSU community? Then we must look at who put this individual there and why?

I’d be willing to bet if we had a leader with a good vision who hired other leaders with a good vision who could inspire and unite our fans and alumni… I believe a lot of problems would fix themselves. Sadly, we have none of that. That all starts at the very top. Our very top at MSU could absolutely careless about any of this. I know that for a fact.

You are Definitely on a lower IQ wavelength for sure. You cannot or refuse to understand basic concepts of how finances are run through an AD. You don’t understand the difference in collegiate athletics on Rev earned to money lost. Baseball looses money and now going from 11.7 to 34 scholarships add in unfortunately more NIl allocation it’s going to continue to be a money loser

I think it is best if you and Sigma find another college football team to cheer for. You are fighting a losing battle here. If you don’t think Baseball means a lot to every ACC and SEC and most Big 12 programs, I don’t think we can help you here.

Texas-good at every sport- WHY- Money
LSU- usually good at every sport- WHY- Money
Georgia- pretty good at every sport- WHY- Money
A&M- usually pretty good at every sport-WHY-Money
Bama- pretty good to great at every sport-WHY- Money
Oklahoma-Florida-Tennessee-Auburn—- pretty good most of the time at all sports-WHY- MONEY

ole miss- getting better with better coaching and better recruiting and better players-WHY-MONEY

Mississippi State- weak Administration, poor department management, terrible HR-hiring of Program leadership, soft recruiting-WHY- LACK of SERIOUS FUND RAISING by Admin Team, not targeting the right donor group! Need to sell naming rights to every athletics facility on campus.
Humphrey is Dead
Hancock Bank was sold
Dudy Noble died and Polk aint looking so good himself
Multi-million $ Tennis stars- sell the naming rights to one of them
Parking Garages- sell naming rights
Practice facilities-sell naming rights

Scoreboard club and press box -sell naming rights

I could go on and on! We need $1 billion influx into athletics! Sell the damn streets naming rights! Stop using concessions as a fund raising tool for select groups by letting them run them and sell each one to a specific restaurant brand!

Palmeiro center likely needs some upgrades. Get him and Clark and Woodruff and Stratton to throw in on it and co-name it!

Get the multi- millionaire football stars to fund the IPF with naming rights and make it the absolute best in the country!

Your user name say is it all. Still under this belief we are po ol mitthiopinstate.

We have invested in football and thanks in large part to some generous alums who see the future is football and not baseball. Howard industries is leading the way for our IPF. But I’ll say it again any money used to fund anything further in baseball is bad investment.
I think it’s up to us fans who want to win to continue to invest in football. It amazes me that our rival sees that football lifts all ships and are balls deep into giving and promoting giving. What do our fans do? ***** on a message board. Say I’m not giving or wish that the system would change. Why won’t our fans step up to the plate? I’ll be very understand why our fans think so little can be accomplished at msu.

Again, $100 per year donors are NEVER going to move the needle. Why don’t you sell your house and boat and cars, divorce your wives and kick your kids out, and give everything to Football NIL since you are in the “everybody else give mood”! We ain’t underfunding BASEBALL! It is not happening. Leave secretariat be. He has been dead for years!!!

You are missing the long game point. Your username is a baseball first and other sports second.
You making fun of the small donors is dumb. As much as I hate to say it our rivals have embraced the small donors as they have the larger ones. So the 100 guy you speak of helps drive that train. What do we do.. we ***** about giving we ***** about we are poor we ***** that we can’t win we ***** about our coach. All from the comfort of either the couch or the LFL. Feed the Auburn RF as they kick our ***, but don’t donate to the cause to help the football team. You baseball fans don’t understand that a successful football team would create more revenue to help the financial crater that baseball is.

Sorry you don't like baseball, but most of the rest of us do and think it's money well spent. I for one would enjoy the hell out of a 10 year run where we won the national championship each year.

It amazes me that they do t get that all the SEC schools are spending on Baseball too, some much more than State! This programs aren’t winning with scholarship only players. They arexsp being big money on baseball. Even Vandy, who had advantages over everyone for years being able to completely fund scholarships for baseball players, now sees to compete, they have to spend millions on baseball players.

We have to have 20 Howard Industries to build a football war chest and they think the average State fan, who probably with a family of 4, making maybe $80,000 per year, can buy 4 tickets with seat licensing, meals, gas, over night stay for 7 home football fans, should still pony up another $500-$1000 per year to pay for 18-21 year old prima Donna’s to get paid more in 2-3 years as college football players than that family of 4 father and mother will earn in a lifetime! It is asinine!

I recently played in a golf event at Oxford Country Club. Every member in our flight had a home in Oxford because they had a kid/kids that went to Ole Miss. Only one of them was an Ole Miss grad. Three had never been to Oxford before their kid decided to visit the school.
How pissed would you be if you finally went off to college and your helicopter parents moved in down the street?

Funny. You act like baseball players aren’t getting NIL deals. You act they won’t be prima donning out in dugout or field. You act like those same 80K year fans aren’t paying for nil or tickets or hotels for baseball games. You act like they aren’t spending thousands of dollars for the rig and all that damn food in LFf. This is a huge problem and disconnect in our fan base. Sure I’ll pay nil to the SS but not for the LT. Those examples why your post holds zero water. Us football first fans don’t get the investment in baseball especially when it’s losing money, yet you baseball onlys are the first to say we are poor we can’t win in football, we need more billionaires. It’s cause yall know the truth and are doing everything you can to keep your beloved money sucking sport priority. News flash…We could win the next 5 CWS and other than you and maybe 15/20K state fans would care. 90% of the college sports universe couldn’t care less. It’s like hockey or lacrosse it’s a regional type sport. Some schools don’t even participate in the sport.
Now about those other schools investing in baseball, sure maybe so but they are putting football first. They understand football drives the athletic department. You can love baseball but understand it’s not nor should ever be in the top tier of funding. And lastly we don’t need a lot of billionaires to win in football sure it would be nice but what we need is for each and every state fan pulling in the same direction. There’s not a poster on this board that can’t donate 25 or more a month to the collective. Most just look for reasons not to give.

6MM infusion into football would have helped closed more players from the portal. Would have increased our salary pool for off field talent evaluations. Our NIL in football is very competitive but another 6MM would elevate us into another level.
I’m anything but arrogant. You are just pissed I laid out the truth about baseball. Love like it whatever I don’t care but understand it’s a huge anchor around our neck and due to decades of poor management and decisions. Again. Loses 1MM each year, carrying a note of 68MM on stadium. Imagine investing 88MM in football from 2011 to today. That’s all I’m trying to say.

I do not believe these numbers for one second. What we saw on YouTube this year doesn’t correlate at all with these numbers. When ncaa baseball and softball were running side by side on YouTube for free. It wasnt even close. One of the regional games, for instance, would have more viewers watching live than softball got the entire day. And that was just one game. every single postseason college baseball game outperformed softball in viewer numbers. A lot of times the numbers for 1 college baseball game outperformed everything all softball games got in an entire weekend combined.

I mean you want me to believe these numbers when I could easily see…… 26 total people were watching the softball games with nothing in the chat but some weirdos. And yet thousands were watching each baseball game with each game chat full of fans.

Again. Do you not understand that Ole Miss, LSU, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Auburn, Texas, A&M, Oklahoma and probably even Alabama are spending as much or more on Baseball as a Mississippi State is. Oklahoma didn’t win the NC with scrubs. They paid hefty for that roster as did all the other teams. LSU and Vandy are so pissed off about their seasons, they have out portalled and out recruited everybody even while others were playing in the tourney. You are just so blinded by your hate for MSU fans and the university spending money on a sport you either sucked at or your kid sucked at, you can’t see that everybody in the SEC and ACC and most of the BIG 12 are doing the same damn thing. Just because it is too damn cold in the north for them to field decent baseball programs doesn’t mean we have to be the only school to destroy our most successful program to move our football team from 16th out of 16 to 10th or 12th out of 16. You would be one of the 1st in line to bellyache that State going to the Birmingham Bowl is a waste of money because even that short bus ride with hotel stays and meals would be a net loss for the football program! Don’t be so naive to think State is playoff bound in football if they are the only damn SEC school to end their baseball program so they can so bd more on football. If State spends $50 million on football the big schools will spend $100 million, yielding the same results.

Wanna talk about big donors. There are probably as many Doctors and Lawyers who got their undergrad degree at State as there are at Ole Miss! But they don’t donate to State Athletics! I know rich Delta Farmers who’s grand parents, parents, Aunts, Uncles, Brothers, Sisters all went to MSU. They sent their kids to Washington School or Indianola Academy or Bayou Academy or Pillow Academy. Their daughters ended up at Ole Miss and so the daughter’s boy friends followed them?along with daddy’s money!

You dang near have to be wealthy to send your kids to JA, Prep, MRA, or Hartfield, and most of those kids end up at Ole Miss because “PARTY”. Rich Texans whose kids are too dumb to get into UT send their kids to Ole Miss along with their money!

State refers to itself as “The People’s University” . Ole Miss doesn’t want to be that. They want daddy’s little girls and daddy’s money! STATUS without a quality education! A rich mommy’s dream for her child!!!!

Tell me you have zero clue what you’re talking about without saying it. I touched a nerve cause I was right.
As for me and my athleticism. I played baseball and was pretty good probably better than most on here. I gave it up to concentrate on another sport.. I played D1 in a sport not baseball but had a pretty cool experience and path after college. My daughter was a D1 athlete as well. So maybe don’t try and to spew ******** about me or my family. I didn’t say **** about your family. Hell feel free to judge my athleticism and ability but I’m in better physical shape than 90% of the posters on this board and competed in a sports and at a high level that 99% of this board only wished they could. My family and I have donated a **** ton of money and will continue to do so because we know and understand what it takes to win

Youre using illegal streams on youtube as your metric?

ETA: I'm not even advocating that softball gets more eyeballs than baseball, just a wild source.

Softball has blown past baseball on collegiate level. It’s a widely known fact. You should see the momentum it has at the youth level in Texas. Registrations doubling and tripling at many programs in a couple of years. Volleyball exploding too. I wouldn’t propose dropping everything and pouring it all into those two sports, but even they would be a FAR better investment than baseball long term for promoting the university. This is coming from a dad that has a son and grew up in MS as a die hard football fan.

Is MSU forward thinking enough to capitalize on this? I doubt it. I enjoy baseball and I honestly think I know what people my dads age who lived in MS 70+ years would think about all this. Facts are facts though.

Y'all noticed that dudes who are really into softball and don't have a daughter on the actual team tend to be complete weirdos?

They're similar to WNBA fans.
Or, they see baseball as the slow, boring sport it actually is. Seems weird one is growing a lot while the other isn't so I'd say there's just more people getting into softball, now the pro softball leagues are gross. Hell if you replaced the outfield rigs with just bleachers our attendance would cut in half because more are there for that party than that game

You understand that nobody cares? You can’t prove anything about yourself and nobody wants you to - because nobody cares. People would respect you more if you’d just discuss facts and ideas instead of going to personal shaming. It’s a message board, it’s meant to be a discussion. If you want to try and alpha male people with your perceived status, do it at your country club or at your NIL meetings. Just so we’re crystal clear, we don’t give a hunk of donkey shlt who you are, how much you donate and how much you played whatever sport in JUCO.

If you want to put your name out there like Charlie, Bo Bounds or Bruce because you’re actually a name, that’s one thing. But if you want to be just another dude like the rest of us, stop with the shame act.

You come across as extremely jealous and insecure. Why anyone would get worked up whatsoever about what he said is baffling. He makes really good points.

I don’t owe you or anyone anything to post.my name and resume. I’m pretty confident in my own skin and what I post out there. But please show me where I shamed anybody in my previous post. I didn’t attack the poster or his family like he did mine.
I state facts and ideas. Not my fault it makes a majority of the posters and this fan base uncomfortable. That’s the crux of the issues. When you discuss funding, fund raising or monetary things within the MSU community it cause defensiveness, division and uncomfortable situations. Truth or not a large majority of fans don’t support or are reluctant to give toward any sport except baseball. And don’t give me the excuse, well we are winners in baseball. Facts are we have never been ultra focused on winning at football. We have a larger alumni base than our rival, we have ultra successful alumni who do give but we also have those who are still reluctant to give toward any degree in football.

In closing let me say a few more things. I’m not guilting anyone into giving, do what you can with what you can. What I’m pointing out is this. We have a very strong fan base that in fact hates NIl yet has zero problem supporting baseball but won’t support football and basketball. We have a larger alumni base percentage of our fans who just hate NiL and won’t give at all. Again, not shaming or being disrespectful but if you have the ability to support but don’t support NIL and yet continue to post negative comments, post lies and misinformation on our financial situation or our programs your being part of the problem and not the solution. At the end of the day we are all MSU fans and want the best and want to win. Where we have a large disconnect is that we don’t pull in the same direction. All I’m doing is pointing out this.

Nope. What you and Sigma are doing is fighting a losing battle. Wasting your time and our time and valuable space on this page that we could be discussing State sports, ALL OF THEM!

so since you are doing so well and are so successful why dont you offer $1 million to NIL. It seems you are desperate to have others donate to football when they prefer to donate to the sport of their choice.

Again, your fight is futile. And we baseball fans buy football tickets and go to the games and hope our team wins. As for basketball, I watch every game but dont expect much when the fan base, many in here, ran off the best coach we had since Babe McCarthy. Not to mention his wife and 3 kids lived, breathed and loved all things MSU. He made one mistake in poor judgement going after a legacy who couldnt control his weight or his temper. And two players embarrassed the University on TV in Hawaii and that was it!
Now we are paying these freaking prima donnas millions to play games instead if being students!

You aren’t thinking clearly about this. The only “LOSING” that is taking place in this equation is MSU sports in general… sans our wonderful CWS softball team that got more positive pub for our university than our men’s sports combined this year. Nobody wants to be part of a loser. In the current state of college athletics, our football team going 1-15 in SEC probably makes many prospective students RELUCTANTLY choose MSU if anything. Some will choose us regardless due to major, legacy, etc… if you aren’t smart enough to see this there’s not much helping you.

Your last sentence says all we need to know about your thoughts on real sports like football and basketball. Really really sad. And yes I give my family has given and will continue to support NIL. I’m not apologetic anything I have posted but damn dude your last sentence says it all.

I actually agree with most of this. So that's progress. I don't think there's any MSU fan alive that doesn't think we need to be good at football. It's about the chances of it actually happening and what environment fosters those changes.

So let's start from the beginning. I don't care about what chatgpt says about living alumni bases - Ole Miss has a head start on us in money and football. Just what it is. And yes, they are united. We are not. We have a toxic football culture. So the first step is accepting that and trying to figure out ways to mitigate it. That's step one, and until that's resolved you aren't going to have the unity you see at Ole Miss. And we also won't be good at football long term. This conversation really doesn't go any further than that.

Now as far as baseball taking away from football, until we fix our football problem, it doesn't really matter. Any money invested in football is wasted. We already get the SEC check, for now. So why donate to try and win if we cannot win?

I do not want to argue about the specifics, like a game last year or this year or what happens next year with Lebby in particular. We all see the writing on the wall there (you do too). When you start assigning metrics to judge whether you keep a guy, you've got the wrong guy. So as far as this discussion, I'd appreciate staying away from why we think he in particular can't win, and if he does, great.

So back to football - I've laid out my plan many times. Keenum and a group of true visionary leaders need to get on the same page about what we want to be as an athletic department, in every sport - and we've also got to rid ourselves of this constant comparison to Ole Miss. This is the modern day SEC......they aren't going anywhere and neither are we.........fighting with them nets us nothing, it's small time. Then it becomes easier to hire AD's, as you now have that vision - which is mainly aligned on how we view football. You decide on all the variables......what type of head coach you want, what type of offense you want, what type of recruiting strategy you need - then it becomes easier to hire a head coach, over and over and over. Same for coordinators. I'm not talking lip service like we do at the press conference, I mean a written out plan, and we're not afraid to talk about it. Then you stick with that shlt no matter what, because we're going to have idiots, especially with a culture like ours'. They aren't going away, but maybe they'll be silenced when we hit the payoff.

I'm just some middle class dude who knew predicted Selmon was a mistake and predicted Lebby was a mistake, from the beginning. I wanted Benko because I thought he had a plan for the department. I didn't love everything Cohen did but I do know he also had a plan. We have none now......zip zilch. "Just give" is not a plan. But the good news is that. the night is darkest just before the dawn. The last time we had all this folks begging for money was the Croom Error. And then boom, we get rid of Templetoes/Croom and get Byrne/Mullen, and money explodes. And remember - Byrne had a plan, even if short term. He modernized our logo and branding, which of course, we've tried hard to undo, because we didn't have the strong leadership fully in place at the top. But thankfully Keenum did prevent that from completely happening.

The one positive I can say is this - I think Keenum has it in him. He's made some mistakes, but I do still believe he's a guy that can enact some positive change. It starts by forgetting Ole Miss exists. Or at least, that's the right choice. Decide who we want to be and make that reality happen. If not, and we want to just be their little brother and just another member of the SEC, that's fine. It's where we are right now and also why a significant portion of the fanbase has said the hell with it all except baseball.

Again, you and Sigma’s mantra is falling on deaf ears. Nothing is going to change regarding Baseball, except maybe even more donations and expenditures. So instead of wasting your time chastising State fans who love all the sports MSU plays, take out a full page AD in the Starkville Daily News and The Reflector criticizing other State fans who support ALL within their means. Maybe you will guilt a couple hundred to increase their donations.

The only “deaf ears” are baseball fans who think their sport matters in the grand scheme of things. Want to talk futility, look at tv ratings over the past decade and see how baseball is the caboose, dead last, of the major sports with zero growth. The butt end of the sports spectrum. The wind is clearly in the sails of some of what is mentioned here and **NEWSFLASH** baseball ain’t it.

Redundantly, WE CAN WIN THE NEXT 10 BASEBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, it won’t even so much as move the needle.

Our wonderful professor at MSU always used to say “skate to where the puck is going”

Hell of a good post. Might be one of your best ever! But before we “forget about Ole Miss”, I’d like to point out part of the reason for their success that led to the money flowing like wine from the water jugs!
They finally hired the right guy as Chancellor who worked hard to remove their old south vestiges. Then they hired an AD who drove that message home to the boosters, made 2 outstanding hires in Kiffin and the Womens basketball coach and a decent hire in Beard even though he had baggage. He didn’t listen to the fanbase who wanted fire the best baseball coach they ever had. They already had a foundation built for raising funds since they had been paying athletes for years more than most. Keep in mind they had let go or “retired” other favorite son ADs who had made some really sucky hires. But they nearly always hired Head Football Coaches with Head Coaching experience except for The Crazy Cajun.

Now compare to State: Our president listened to the old cigar boys who are likely the ones in the chair back seats who never stand up, don’t own a cowbell and feel they are entitled to make coaching decisions.
State drug their feet in hiring a “qualified” AD and then the Head football coach, who everybody with a brain could tell he had health issues when he couldn’t even get though a press conference without hacking, coughing, gargling his spit, died of “congestive heart failure.
So the cigar boys told Keenum to keep Arnett, Keenum hired an AD in training, and State continued its run of hiring unproven Coordinators as Head Coach and let the head coach pack hire friends for positions they weren’t qualified to coach.

AND….. Freaking NIL (a lie of epic proportions) and free agency hit college and killed a program not prepared for it.

If rules and regulations aren’t put in place to fix that, State will need to over spend for coaches and players! Money they don’t have. Need to sell naming rights like I have said multiple times!

I know this. I’ll be in the Stands when State plays ULM with probably about 25,000 other fans in a 62,000 seat stadium. And the schedule gets much harder than last year after that. And just like “Rain falls mainly on the Plains”, Lebby will get fired and State will hire another lifetime Assistant Coach to replace him and the cycle will start over for another 3 years!
