Little Maestro : World Cup Goal #20. When he gets in behind the defender and collects the ball, you cannot stop him. Just unreal. Cape Verde is a tough team, I'll give them credit. But Messi is simply ... Messi.

That's part of the psychology of it. Given how it's set-up, you should score. It's a whole lot of space to cover for just one guy. If you hit to a top corner accurately, the goalie has no chance of stopping it. It's basically impossible. But because of that, guys are tempted to try to be perfect, and in the process, lessen their margin for error. And suddenly you see shots getting sprayed over and around the goal.

Seems like the best spot to kick it a lot of times is straight down the middle.

Pretty much 99% of the time. But I did see one game that went to penalties (can't remember when) and the goalie somehow intuiting that a center shot was coming. He basically just stuck his hands out and ended with a big smile on his face.

The safest shots are low left or low right. The goalie has a chance on those if he guesses right (unlike top corners), but that chance is really small if it's hit well and there's far less chance of it sailing than trying for a top corner blast.

Pressure is still real, though. Consider this- Steph Curry is almost indisputably the best shooter who has ever played basketball. You can find a video of him hitting 101 threes in a row in practice, and I'm sure he's capable of hitting twice as many FT's. Yet his career FT% (which is the best ever) still involves him missing 7/100 in game situations.

I watched a few balls spin on that grass where a well placed kick on the ground would be impossible to stop if it spun the right way. Both kicks sailed just outside the goal but it was a crazy bounce and fast.
