…the grand finale at a fireworks show. Took our kids to small town show in PA tonight. Laying in the grass on a ball field. It was a great show, but a small town so we were able to sit really close. Almost felt with the fireworks were going to land on my face. I don’t care. There are not many things that generate awe for me, but the grand finale gets me every time.

Takes me back to the first fireworks shows my parents took us to at Ft. Jackson. Watched while sitting on the hood of our station wagon.

Just returned from spending 7 weeks in PA at a small township.

One of the most obvious differences from Columbia (and much of the South) as I drove around was the patriotic flags and decorations on the lawns and businesses in the PA areas where we stayed. Perhaps it was the proximity to Gettysburg but there is a marked difference in celebrating our country. Why is that, do you suppose?

Also, we took our kids to Ft. Jackson numerous times for the 4th fireworks display as they were growing up. Great times!

For the first time ever, we drove over to Butte, MT to see their fireworks display above the big "M" at the top of Uptown. It was a pretty good display. The people of Butte spend tens (hundreds?) of thousands of dollars on their personal fireworks as well, so when they are all launching them off at the same time across the city, it makes for a pretty impressive site. Only problem is it doesn't get good and dark around here this time of year until about 10:45 so it makes for a very late night/early morning getting back to the house.

Then you missed the Bicentennial celebration in 1976.
That was a lot of fun. There was a freedom train that went around the country as a traveling museum of 1776.
Most kids dont get taught history like that anymore.
