Without a doubt it was salmon croquettes. Close second. Liver and onions. When I’d walk in from practice and smelled either, I’d head to the neighbors for a bologna and cheese samich
Ha ha. She tried to cook some sort of corn beef for st Patrick’s day one time. She took a couple bites and took it away from everyone. Dad and I never said a word. It was horrible.

I admit, I would not eat that. (salmon croquettes), Not enough ketchup to make that shat work.

Creamed Tuna on Toast i.e. milk, flour, butter, salt & pepper made into a thick creamy sauce poured over a poor can of tuna on some unfortunate pieces of toast. If she wanted to fancy it up she would add a small jar of pimentos.

We used to feed the dog leftovers from the table. She would eat all of Mom’s stuff, peas, beans…whatever, EXCEPT the corn bread. She used to haul that off and bury it under a maple tree in the back yard. That was one hell of a maple tree till a tornado got it. The dog burying that cornbread really got to Mom, and she was quick to admit she was not a good cook, and really didn’t care…except about that.

She would occasionally make some kind of tomato aspic thing she got out of a magazine in the 60’s. It was horrendous, but she loved it.

And she’d get a wild hair and put some weird sheet in jello.

Pot roast with carrots and potatoes. Not that is was bad, just that I absolutely hate pot roast. My dad liked for her to cook the occasional rutabaga. I stayed out of the kitchen when that stinking crap was being cooked.

We were always lab rats. Threats of not leaving table until what you were served is gone were frequent. Most of the time, I could do it. One time....no.

Green beans with raisins, it was a baked casserole style dish and those raisins had been pulling liquid and had a nasty texture and flavor. I could not take the texture at all. I made it 3 hours that night sitting at the table

My mom got on some obscure health kick and read where buckwheat flour was good for you so she got a pancake mix made with that. Damn pancakes were gray. I **** you not they were gray. And they tasted even worse than that sounds.

In the other thread, I noted that my mother constantly overcooked meals largely because she loved (and still does) well done steaks

She’s better at it now

Congealed salad.
Also tried to pull a fast one on me and convince me that I was eating regular pasta one night, turns out the noodles were squash. I don't mind the change but the deception I'll never forgive

My Mother was not a good cook so the list is long, I picked a wife that cooks like a Chef so I've been redeemed.

Your Momma just didn’t know how to make salmon croquettes because at my house they were pretty damn good.
But,…. Boiling cabbage smell is something I can still smell today and it’s still awful. Like you, I could smell it before I walked in the door!
Agreed. Salmon patties are great (with ketchup). Cabbage smells bad but tastes great.

No so much that it was bad but I certainly didn’t care for it, the pear salad thing was awful but she would sometimes do the same thing substituting pineapple slices for the pear halves and I loved them. Dad liked turnips and I never could stand them. Dad hated liver so I was never subjected to that atrocity. After dad died she quit making her fantastic cornbread and started making Jiffy cornbread for family dinners and that abomination should not even be considered cornbread.

My mom isn’t really a good or bad cook, she just does everything so bland. Ketchup, butter, salt & pepper was the extent of her seasoning.

My brothers favorite meal was her goulash. When my wife had it for the first time, she was like - this is just ground beef, ketchup, and macaroni. I was confused what she thought the problem was.

I swear we grew up on that goulash, fried fish, burgers & hotdogs, tuna patties, veggies from our garden, mac & cheese, and pb & banana sandwiches. Some combination of that almost every night. She would bake some bbq chicken that I hated.

Everything my mother cooked was outstanding, but she left my taste buds behind when she switched to magazine foods. All in the name of health. Nasty!!

I don’t really remember anything my mom cooked that I wouldn’t eat. My dad on the other hand. One of his favorite meals was canned salmon, with added water, warmed in a skillet. Then you pour the juice, meat particles, and bones over biscuits.

I think it maybe had eggs added to it also. All I remember is I went to bed hungry on those nights.

Cooking rutabaga will attract green flies better than a rotting carcass.

My little brother found a great way to end being made to eat stuff he didn’t like. Dad said you’re not leaving table till you eat all of it. So he ate it & promptly threw it up all over the dinner table. I don’t think dad ever made him eat something again.

I will add....my eating is very diverse, but thats the one thing I can recall not being able to eat. We were poor, so I definitely still have it in my makeup to eat everything that has been placed in front of me. Hah.

Every sandwich ever made besides PB&J. I hated mayo and tomatoes and that fact never sunk in back in the day. Every. Damn. Time.

I like tomatoes these days, but not mayo…. And that’s a great thing to not like, so thanks mom!
