Absolute lunacy. Between this inevitable expansion and the March Madness ridiculous expansion, they just cannot get out of their own way, blinded by the greed.

Couple thoughts:

I’m never surprised when there’s obvious money to be made that the people most likely to benefit from that will do whatever they can to line their pockets/maintain power/etc.

My gut reaction as a fan is I don’t like this. It will almost certainly destroy minor bowls, which seem to be on life support already anyway. But on the flip side, would I rather watch a minor bowl game in early-mid December or more games that are part of a tournament? Pretty sure my choice would be the latter, even if those early round games are not super competitive.

It will happen, eventual if not sooner .
If the money is there to make, the product is secondary.
the NC game started out because people didn't like the polls deciding Champion, especially if they (AP & Coach's) disagreed on what program was best..
So two teams got the nod.
Then the cry was there are more than 2 teams that deserve to play for the championship ,
So a 4 team playoff evolved.
The whines than came loud and clear about deserving teams being left out.
So a 12 team playoff was devised and now that's not good enough..

There are not 12 teams deserving a shot at the National Championship , much less the ridiculous 24 amount.
But like the NCAA Basketball Tournaments (M&W Dance Teams)) the more the merrier is the name of championship playoff games..

I say F that and again suggest a playoff of champions.
Have the Power 4 along with the G-6 conferences send their champions.
Then have the top ranked independent invited if ranked in top 15.
Leaving one spot open for the top ranked non championship program., or the top 2 conference also rans if the top one inpendant isn't in the top 15 and not ranked better. .
Keep the conference championship games, making all conferences have them ,and call them play in games for the big walk

If the tradeoff is to go a 24 team playoff (add 12 games) and get rid of conference championships (subtract 10 games), sign me up right now.

Tony Petitti is a former TV exec, and that plays a big role in his thinking of a 24-team playoff. For Petitti, it's all about max money at all costs. Greed is known to destroy things as it eats itself out of existence. At some point, you need principles/codes that you live by to survive. That code will save you when you least expect it.

A 24 team playoff doesn’t bother me at all. Would be approx 18% of FBS schools, not excessive at all. I have never understood how a larger playoff will “demean” the regular season. If anything it will increase interest around the country. Much rather watch meaningful playoff games than minor/middling bowl games which few care about including the players who often opt out. There will be some blowouts, there are often blowouts in some early playoff matches in any sport. There are often blowouts in bowl games. Bowl games outside the playoff are on their way out, good riddance. They are an anachronism. Things evolve always , I roll with it.

It's not fair!

It should be a 128 team single elimination tournament.

Shorten the regular season to 8-9 games, eliminate league championship games, and use the regular season record for seeding purposes.

Personally, I think 16 is the sweet spot. No byes…1/16…2/15…and so on. If the playoffs do indeed go to 24 then the SEC should immediately switch back to an eight game conference slate.

Yeah - 24 seems awkward to me. I don’t like the byes either. If they really want to expand so much, at that point it should just be 32 with, like you said, reversion to 8 game conference schedule and no conference tournaments. Autobids for every conference champ rendering the first round games for the true contenders games like the 1-16 and 2-15 games in March Madness. That would clean, and fine - wouldn’t water anything down. It’d just become the routine standard that Sun Belt and MAC teams were competing for the “right” to get clobbered in the round of 32, just like the SWAC and NEC teams do in basketball.

Want 24 ??
Again I say !!
Start off with all the Conference Champions and any Independent ranked in the top 15.
All of the P-4 Conference Champions and the G-6 title holders, independents that make the cut. and go from there

I agree! 24 team playoff will make cfb more competitive, not less. It will give more teams a shot. Not just Ohio State, Alabama, Oregon, yawn…did I say Michigan yet, yawn. Jesus these same teams over and over.

And the minor bowls can be the playoff games.
