The logic of soccer

We will use ultra slow motion, high resolution still shots and computer overlays to determine if a player is even the smallest fraction of an inch offsides, and we will take several minutes to do so if necessary.

Also, the refs will roughly guesstimate how much time is left in the game and nobody else, not even the players, know when the game will be over. Oh, and the refs may not even be 100% sure.

Never watch soccer, but this appears to be the refs opportunity to pretend to be royalty.

I've watched more soccer in the last few months than I have in the entire rest of my life combined. I admit, it's growing on me. But I have concluded the offside penalty is probably the worst penalty in all of sports. When you combine that with video-assisted-replay with the computer generated lines that determine if some part of the offensive player's body was beyond the defender, it makes it nearly unwatchable for most American audiences.

I watched a soccer game maybe once or twice in my life. I'm 63 years old.

The players kicked the ball around midfield for about 20 minutes.

Not my cup of tea.

This has been my impression when I turn the game on. I know there is some strategy and skillful passing, but a large portion of the game seems to be guys just wildly kicking the ball as hard as they can away from their end of the field. It seems they do this for a while until the ball happens to land in an advantageous spot.

I guess the mysterious and unknown ending of the game is part of the charm. It seems very European whereas it seems more American to have a definite ending point.

Soccer is a great sport and I hope all the bandwagon fans don't complain about the rules to the point that some liberal whack job who is the minority of world wide fans doesn't petition for rule changes. The rules are what they are. I agree VAR is about as bad as super slow mo football replays.
However, contrary to my previous statement, I could go along with offside rules that are similar to hockey. A player with size 12 shoes shouldn't be called offsides when a size 10 or 11 would be onside, or offside because his arm just happens to be extended past the position of the last defender. That effects the spirit of the sport.
These world cup games have been tremendous and it looks like WC fans have been enjoying American life and taking in baseball games and eating all the fatty food we have.

Saw a funny satire video of Europeans returning home and having to eat European food after visiting here and eating our food. Asking for free refills, ranch, etc.

Ranch and free refills is why health care is so expensive. Most of them have free healthcare. So important decisions were made by both parties. Big corp greed must not be a problem in Europe.

As much as I hate VIR it is not any worse than MLB new pitch challenges, or NFLs 20 minute replays.
I've played soccer since the early 70's so I understand it and love it.
I dont criticize field hockey because I don't know anything about it.
I feel most that criticize soccer really know very little about it.
There are certain things about the modern game I hate, the rolling around like you have a broken leg when someone barely touches you is the worst. My shins feel like a washboard and they never stopped play for me!
I'm hoping to go to England next year and catching a Everton match as well.
I will continue to enjoy the world cup this year!

It's like free anything. When it's free, the supply rapidly goes to zero.
The average tax rate in France is close to 30%. Canada is even higher. It's about 15% here.

One thing I know. People come to America for healthcare. Americans don't go elsewhere.

Feel free to go to Canada and enjoy that free 22-hour ER wait time.

I despise the ABS system in baseball for all the same reasons, but it at least it's limited to 2 challenges per game to use it. An ump might call a pitch a ball, but on challenge they throw up the computer generated strike zone and zoom in on the ball to see if maybe a frayed end of thread from the stitching caught the edge of the strike zone.

How many turnovers to they have in one of these games?

Seems it would be more interesting if they added field goals. 🤔

Or maybe had 2 pt & 3 pt plays?

Not my cup of tea.

Understand completely, and not arguing. But offering a little explanation.

The nearest example i can think of is a basketball team moving the ball around the 3 point line, looking for a good avenue to get the ball under the basket.

All those passes are about moving the defense so you can get an opportunity to one of your forward guys.

I saw one person questioning why player A would make a pass to player B only to have player B one touch pass it back without hesitation, or looking for a play. It was all to move the defense closer to player B, so that player C becomes more open.

I have a friend who went to Toronto from Atlanta earlier this year for some sort of specialized hernia surgery.

Yeah, there is medical tourism to Mexico. I was speaking generally, but people do all sorts of dumb things. I don't think I'd go to get healthcare in a country where it's not even safe to drink the water.
Probably safe to drink Cozumel water since that area is geared towards American tourists.

There are places in the US where it's not safe to drink the water. There are also places in the US where there is no running water.
That is a bordering on a sot comment.
I imagine you have never been outside the tourist areas of Mexico or Nicaragua or such places where parasites infest closest to 100% of the small villages.
Every American is a millionaire comparatively.

The local Fox affiliate today declared that the US is getting World Cup fever with Fox + Telemundo viewer count exceeding the NBA finals viewership. The media again shows themselves to be out of touch with US populace. Popularity has been growing for years. The media is now talking notice
