offsides in soccer seems like a dumb golf rule. It should be your whole body, not any part. Way too technical. What is the reasoning behind the rule?
Another good one is...."when is the game over?......No one knows"
So should a defensive lineman be able to stand in the neutral zone? What about letting wide receivers take off before the snap?

I always hated that rule growing up and thought it was ridiculous for under 12 sports. Cost me several shots on goal.
I admittedly don't watch a lot of the sport outside of the World Cup (plus other USMNT games) and State soccer, but I've just operated under the assumption that the offside rule is so strict because the game is supposed to be difficult. It takes great timing on a lot of these runs to beat the last line of defense while remaining onside, and the goals are all the more exciting for it. Beauty in the struggle and all that.
Obviously a lot of people tuning in for the first time are going to be confused by it, American viewers want to see more offense, etc. It's the debate that rages on every 4 years even though neither side will ever be swayed by the other.

Even if you made it the whole body you would still have the same controversies just with the back half of the body.
This is one I just do not understand. Why does it have to be a secret how much time is left or how much extra time there will be?
That it rages every 4 years pretty much says it all about this argument. The people who bring it up only pay attention to the sport during the World Cup. Then they think they can "fix" it.
It's up to the ref. He is the timekeeper. I kind of like it that way. It adds to the suspense at the end of a tight game.
It’s stupid. The refs already have too much influence over the games. It’s not uncommon to see the ref add 30-60 seconds or even more because one team is threatening to score. It’s like if a football team gets to complete their drive after time ran out or a baseball team got to play a 10th inning because they’re were coming back.
It's just part of the game. There would be an uproar if it was changed. It's been tried before but it's never stuck.
Not to mention the game needs 2 refs. To ask one ref to cover the entire field is absurd. I get an AR can call a foul but they don’t really help much.
So being faster than your opponents is an “unfair” advantage? Only in futbol is that penalized! Think of how much more scoring and excitement we would get without that rule. And another change I’d like to see: shrink the goals in half and remove the goal keeper. Play 10 on 10 straight up. Fastest team with the ball wins!
And add clock stoppage for injuries and hydration breaks. 45 minutes should be 45 minutes. I think about all the times Mississippi State would have won football games if they had added stoppage time at the end of the half or game. Twice in situations State could have won the SEC if they had extra time! Florida back under Ballard and Alabama in 2014.
They play by the clock. They stop it when there are significant stoppages in play. When the clock hits zero the game is over.
Zero chance that confusion happens with threaded view.
I’ve said it before. If you remove offsides then it wouldn’t anything like soccer and the people who are apparently rage watching soccer this month would continue to hate soccer. It would look like a total mess of players just standing around the goals like a 5 year old soccer rec league game.
I don't understand why people who apparently couldn't care less about soccer become so unhinged over one of its rules.
I’m sure it does. I said it never stuck, not that it didn’t work. I like it better the way it is. It’s annoying the way they do it in the NCAA, the few times I have watched it.
If you didn't have offsides it would totally change the game. A team could leave a player up field and just kick it long every possession.
Imagine football with no LOS. Just let all the wr stand way up field and when the center snaps the ball, QB throws it as far as he can to a wr already standing 60-70 yards away.

We’re really whining about one rule from the sport with by far the fewest rules?

Is it really an unfair advantage? i mean if a player camps out on one end, the other team has a numbers advantage when they have the ball. Or they could just leave a defender down on that end like maybe a "goalie". They could even leave 2 defenders down on the other end.
Changing the offsides rule would certainly create a more exciting game without changing the game that much.

i'm not saying offsides should go away, but there are small changes that could be made to make the game more exciting without changing it that much.
I don't know, but a few possibilities are the wenger rule, the 18 yard box restriction like hockey. Lots of possibilities i'm sure.
The comparison to american football isn't a great though. Soccer is fluid and they don't start every single play from a LOS.
May as well just eliminate offside completely if you’re going to change it to the Wenger rule.

Maybe. Maybe not. Wouldn't hurt to try it in some leagues and see.
