Practice notes - shooting the ball well, does our defense suck?
Not shooting the ball well? Do we have great defense or do we just suck offensively?
Same way with football practice, if one side does well you fear it's just because the other side is an issue.

I think the best practice reports I heard was the 2012 season, they said these guys are getting after it - a bloodbath.

When I watch any video this year the guys shooting are wide open, WE ARE NOT GOING TO BE this open in the sec so please practice them like it will be. Make them play 5v6 and have a guy always around the shooters.

Kam is doing "some" of the workouts, shooting drills, light impact stuff, conditioning on the bike verses running. Completely precautionary on his end. He could go tomorrow if it was gameday. He'd be slightly slowed down progression wise but otherwise good to go. I haven't heard anything that indicates his injury is bothering him other than some soreness when he overdoes it.

Big Franc has a history of knee injuries which everyone knows, but he also suffers from stress fractures in his fibula and tibia from his size and compensation for the weekend knee. Again, his is precautionary, and more of a build up strength and flexibility around the knee to prevent the tiny stress fractures from occurring. He's much more of a question mark than Kam for season health and I think the staff is taking the summer to get him as healthy (read that as preventatively healthy taking stress off certain areas) so that his injury chances are smaller once the season gets here. Franc is more of a glass cannon I suppose, huge upside defensively and makes us way better in the paint, but might explode at any time. This remains why I hope Potter is at least serviceable because he might be forced to see minutes. Or that Pope fills that last roster spot with a foreign (or reclass) big.
Thank you for that. Feels like the old RR board where you could ask almost any question imaginable about UK basketball and one of the posters could answer it correctly.

Our defense last year was painful to watch. How many times did our defenders just run away from a three point shooter? It happened every game it seemed and never got corrected. I think Pope's offense can be really good this year but I've seen nothing in two years that says he knows what he's doing on defense.

I am certainly no insider and I'm not as connected as I was when my father was still alive and donating to the athletic program. I still play golf regularly with some of his old buddies that are decently connected and I squeeze them for info whenever I see an opening. Though they are former football players from the 70's and early 80's and getting up there in age, they usually have some pretty good insights mixed in with the regular screaming at the clouds about the men's basketball program. I'm just a fan, alumni, and proud supporter of the program who is willing to answer questions when I have a sliver of info that may help calm the nervousness when news is slow coming out of UK.

I think regardless, Potter is going to end up having to show us what he's made of because I don't think we see a year where Franc is healthy the entire time. I think Moreno is too important to our success to burn him into the ground (like we did last year) and let him fade down the stretch because he is too beat up and worn out to be effective when we need him the most. Either the staff has confidence in Potter, has confidence they can small ball 5 with McBride some to spell Moreno, N'Daiye finds a mean streak and can play some 5, or we use that last roster spot for a foreign (or reclass) 5 who can help right away.

I think we would all love to land Kusturica, and if you are Pope you make the kid say no and sign elsewhere. But if you miss on him, a minutes sponge non-liability center should be priority 1 after that.
At 6-11 (7’ in shoes?), if OND works on strength this summer, “small” ball with a stretch 5 could be something we see against the right opponents. He will have to be tough in the paint on defense for that to happen, no doubt.

Does pope not run a Strength and conditioning in the summer? Our guys under him do not look strong. I haven’t seen it mentioned ever but most of popes players do not look like they hit the weights.
weight training and conditioning is voluntary over the summer. guys need to opt in, do their own work. you are given 8 hours max per week to practice for just 8 weeks so no.....there will be no dedicated or serious S&C happening over the summer.

Hoping Williams can be what Acaden Lewis could’ve/should’ve been for us last year, would be massive!
If Mason Williams can be that solid backup PG and N'Diaye and McBribe can give us more at the 4 than we got from Jelly and Mo last season, this could be a special team. I have a lot of confidence in Zoom, Wilkins, Momcilovic, Moreno and Kam

Hope so too! Think (on paper) McBride fits better with what Pope hopes to run, just gotta hope N’Diaye can adjust quickly. Hoping they do the scrimmage against the La Familia team again this year

Wilkins signed with the cats 2 months ago or so what exactly would you expect? Im sorry but the people that attribute a player's strength or lack there of to a coaching staff are just missing the target. Its always on the individual to be accountable for things like that.

When a player is as skilled as Wilkins you dont necessarily have to worry about how thin he is or whatever. He isn't going to be down low banging with the bigs he is going to be slithering through the defense and making plays and shots. How many guys have we seen drafted from this University who went on to have great pro careers that were skinny when they were here. It is a long list.

Probably not as a constant set defense, but more of a mix up looks weapon to toss in occasionally like the past two seasons.

Edit: If I had to guess they will run a gap/ help style defense with the wings switching screens and the weak side rover ball hawking the passing lane gaps (like Oweh did a lot). Lengthy teams succeed well with the pack it in, switch under screens because the length means they can contest and get out and disrupt the curl threes easier while clogging the passing lanes. It's one of Florida's strengths, Illinois and Michigan's last year as well, and I expect it to be one of ours this year.
You are talking as if bench coaching is a strength. True coaches play styles to fit the players

And, yet, Milan said Noah has been the best player for the first three weeks. :)

Pope better get another backup center or potter is gonna be it.pope needs to stop recruiting players with long histories of injuries.
What would be the pitch to said player?
"We want to bring you in as an insurance policy in case of injury to our backup"
No one would consider UK at this point unless a player had the confidence that he could beat out a healthy Keppnag.

Then don't complain when potter gets abused on the defensive end by athletic sec bigs. This is a Pope problem he gambles the season on injury prong players and always winds up losing in the end.

As a father of a D1 beach volleyball player, I can confirm this is the case. That being said, my daughter has been doing 3 a days with cardio, weight training, and sand reps all summer, without her coaches. Most of these guys are surely lifting on their own.
