One thing is now certain…..that potential “cakewalk” to the quarters / semis that folks were talking about a few weeks ago??? LOL. That shít sure didn’t happen.

We get Belgium without our most electric player in the round of 16.

If we somehow win that, Spain or Portugal in the quarterfinals.

Somehow win both? Probably France in the semifinals.

I mean, to win the whole damn thing, we may have to go through Doku (without Balogun),

THEN either Pedri / Rodri / Yamal -or- Fernandes / Vitinha / Neves / Mendes / and, oh yeah, Ronaldo

THEN basically a who’s who of the Top 25-30 players in the world (Dembele, Olise, Mbappé, Cherki, Doue, Barcola, etc.)

…..THEN another crazy list of elite names from probably England or Argentina in the final.

There’s probably only one team that got a tougher draw than we did in the knockout rounds, and that would - by default - be Bosnia.

All the following are true….

It was a red. Unfortunate, but yes a red.

No Balogun is gonna suck vs Belgium.

Past US teams don’t extend the lead in that situation.

Country Roads is fun to belt out with 70,000 friends.

They blast Wonderwall for England and it’s the only time I wish I wasn’t listening to Oasis.

Russel Crowe is a great coach.

The World Cup is the best sporting event on the planet.

It wasn’t harsh. He stomped on the guys lower leg, intentional or not that is always going to be red with VAR. The Bosnian is lucky that leg wasn’t broken.
I disagree. To me, it was purely incidental and he did not "stomp" on the guys leg. He seemingly was lowering his leg, trying to regain his balance.

England at Mexico City will be so freaking amazing to attend in person. People in America who haven’t spent significant time in places like this don’t understand. It puts SEC football to shame. Ride El Subte in Buenos Aires immediately after a World Cup win if you want to experience something wild, intimidating and fun.

Soccer in America though… third rate. Always will be. I know for a fact I know more than folks here on this subject. Like yall I’m pulling for USA all the way. We can dream.

Some say EPL is much more competitive but I’d say a solid 1% of the United States population could even name 3 teams. In 2-3 weeks soccer will go back to the being the 7-8th most popular sport in America behind many of the rising women’s sports.

It can be a fun sport. I got to live in Buenos Aires during a World Cup and it was a blast. It will never be like that in America in our lifetimes however.
NBC family of networks averaged about 1.5 million viewers for its Premier League games last season, which is very impressive seeing that the vast majority of them take place between 6 and 11am on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The most watched Premier League game got nearly 3 million viewers. I bet that number will only grow next season. Soccer is the only major sport where the top league isn’t in the USA. It’s in England. But plenty of Americans have a favorite premier league team and watch the Prem on weekend mornings.

The thing some of y'all don’t get is on a leg breaker type foul, intent doesn’t matter at all. I agree it was incidental, but it was still a red every time.

It will be amazing if you are a Mexican, otherwise it will be dangerous.
I know for a fact based on what you have posted in this thread you are an average American when it comes to soccer.

Will it be any more dangerous than NY Knicks fans attacking Spurs fans on the streets during the NBA Finals?

Every time I’ve been to a game in Mexico I’ve had a blast and the people could not be any nicer. The people are beautiful there too… a vast difference from the hordes of smelly violent lards you’d see in NYC, SF, etc…

You obviously have never been. It’s ok, there’s a lot of ignorance out there.

You seem to be somewhat sarcasterisk dependent.
No sarcasm, the World Cup isn’t the highest level of the sport. That would be the the upper levels of the UEFA Champions League. Those teams are essentially all star teams picked from the international teams play at the World Cup, and those that don’t. Tell me you know little about world soccer without specifically saying so. PSG would run away with this tournament, and so would several other top clubs.

Ok, if we hold on and win, down a man, I would be actually impressed. I don’t think much of US soccer, but winning, after going down a man is good. I still don’t think we get past the Belgians, but tonight showed some grit, something we have rarely shown on the big stage.
We can tell.

Based on your other comments, it seems like you don’t know much about soccer in general, either.

LOl, I’ve been a Liverpool fan since the strike partnership, (the antiquated 4-4-2) was Robbie Fowler and Stan Collymore. The ignorance here about soccer, and that absolutely includes YOU, is no surprise.

Puebla and Queretaro… had a blast. Azteca is in Mexico City and is widely considered a much safer venue than the previous two I mentioned. The fans couldn’t be more cool. I’d imagine if I went down there acting like a complete a** like many people do here… I’d probably not make things pleasant for myself. I’m very respectful though and have had ZERO problems.

I know for a fact based on what you have posted in this thread you are an average American when it comes to soccer.

95% or higher on this board are Average American soccer fans, regardless if they've posted in this thread or not.

We get it. The World Cup isn't important to you, personally, at all. The "right" way to view it is just hoping your team's players aren't injured.

This isn't the World Baseball Classic. But, you know this.

You seem to take the stance that every other big-brained, Football Manager video game player of 2 decades plus, looks down their nose at the planet's biggest tournament.

The 17ing planet disagrees with you.

I'll never argue rules, cards, penalties, etc with you for I know I don't know enough.

But pretending the World Cup doesn't matter is utter nonsense.

Even those that play, yes the most valuable ones, disagree with you.

I agree with the coach. The ref is the judge here, and that play is not clearly malicious enough to warrant a player being taken from a team for basically a game and a half at a critical stage of the biggest tournament in the world.

In that case it doesn’t matter if it’s malicious or not. It’s like the targeting rule in US football, lack of intent doesn’t excuse you. Do I like either rule, no, I loathe them. But the rule is the rule, that was a straight red, and there is no debate possible. The replay with the ankle being stomped into the ground, no matter WHY it is being stomped into the ground is absolutely definitive.

Hey arrogant idiot, I was kidding the guy who likes HS girls soccer better than the World Cup. I didn’t say anything about what the highest level of the sport was.

Touch grass. Nobody’s enjoying your overserious take on everything soccer.

Of course debate is possible. It’s a judgement call. We’ve already seen Messi get no card from something that was at the very least a yellow. You are 17’n exhausting.

Actually the entire planet agrees with me on playing Mexico at the Azteca.

The other stuff, what in the hell are you talking about? I never said the planet doesn’t care about this. I just said my main concern is getting Liverpool players out of it unhurt. It’s fun to watch otherwise. I’m rooting for the US and England, no Liverpool guys there.

The most valuable ones, and ALL of the others, make their livings at their clubs. That’s where the money is. If you made them choose….easy choice for them all.

I didn’t think so. I’ve been to Mexico games in the US. When Mexico wins, cool. When they lose……not so cool. I can’t imagine getting out of the Azteca after you beat them.

Reading comprehension isn’t your thing….obviously. You said what you said. Looking Forward to that generation of US girls wining the men’s World Cup. You called it!

I hate to break it to you but the women in this country are actually successful in this sport. EXTREMELY successful. The envy of the world. The men on the other hand… historically a complete laughingstock. Maybe one day that will change? Chances are next to zero but we can hope, right?
