You are already massively penalized for being a player down for the rest of the match.

The biggest tournament in the world shouldn't be ruining games before they even begin. Imagine SGA not being able to play in the next game of the NBA playoffs because he fouled out or got a technical foul.

It's supposed to be entertainment and is the biggest sporting event in the world that only comes every 4 years. These refs can just decide outcomes of games ruins it.

Yeah and if you're going to give a red card, knowing how steep of a penalty that is, that play isn’t one you red card someone for.
A red card should be for malicious acts, that was far from it.

I watched the Ecuador game last week. It was a great game, forget who they were playing, but they were literally tackled 4 times in the box and the officials never even blew the whistle. I was stunned. Game ended in a draw and the other team was celebrating.

I think they just didn't want the game to be decided on a penalty kick, but dang, Ecuador got hosed.

I'm glad we scored that shorthanded goal though and even more glad that bs red card didn’t cost us the game.

Problem is, it may cost us the next.

A red card for a non malicious, non goal saving play is absolute BS.

It is possible to waive red card post-game, but it won’t be done in this type of situation.

Draymond missed a finals game against Cavs

The World Cup has been around for nearly 100 years. Does the rest of the world believe red cards are ruining the World Cup or are we just saying that because one of ours was penalized with a card?

I won't pretend to know the ins and outs of soccer but Americans tend to go hot take/we're suddenly experts city on things like this when 99% of the time none of us talk soccer or even think about it.

Well, most of the experts and analysts that do following regularly seem to agree it was a terrible call. So there's that.

But I agree one call doesnt ruin an event. The USA was likely to lose to Belgium anyways. This just increases that likelihood. IMO.

That was such a ******** call last night.. He was getting fouled way worse all night long and nothing was getting called and the first time he just basically made a simple foul they called him for a red card.... That **** was some UK type of referee treatment that I saw last night....

There was certainly no intent to harm on the American player's part.

Besides, is that red card applicable to ANYBODY who did the exact same thing?

Would they call that a red card against Messi, knowing it's taking him out of the next game - if they even win ? Does that apply to Ronaldo, Mbappe, Haaland, Kane LITERALLY ANYBODY AND EVERYBODY ?

cmon, everyone knows they would not have given that to anyone else, especially an even bigger name.

It's really upsetting and distressing. I hope Pochettino can make the best of it.

Agree with all of this, but take Messi out of your post. He WAS given a red in an almost identical situation!

The ref didnt even had out a yellow on the field, giving a red was absolutely insane. Will take a minor miracle to beat Belgium without Balo.

Idk if anyone has read about the ref but he’s a Brazilian who was involved in a case regarding match fixing. Terrible call but it doesn’t have to hurt us. We have some depth not too much at striker and it would be a mistake to play Pepi or wright as our front runner. But we need someone who can hold the ball so our mf can play off him. Pulisic could play that striker spot. And berhalter to his spot or weah in balogans spot. We need to play the best 11. Not throw pepi or wright out there.

Btw it’s not the foul that drew the red. I mean there was no foul called. It wasn’t until the ref brokeVAR rules and asked for slow motion and still shots which is a violation of var usage.

I don't care about giving a red card for a foul but stepping on a dude's leg happens in every sport? And shouldn't be an automatic disqualifier for the next game in the tournament.

Cleats first into an ankle can result in serious injury, regardless if it was accidental. And there was some force put on the ankle because of the momentum. We want to say it's unfair because it's our player and our team but if you look around the internet, it seems like most seasoned fans see it as a clear red card. We don't have to like the call but if you're slamming cleats first into an opponent's leg or ankle, you gotta expect some type of punishment for that. It is what it is.

I don't have a very big problem with the red card. Would have preferred it was a yellow, but very easily could have broken an ankle.
The problem is why does it have to affect the next game?
He was out for 30+ minutes and gave B&H a major advantage. They simply were not able to take advantage of it.
Why should that red card give Belgium an advantage.

And yes, nothing can be done about it, or will be done about it. But if it was Mbappe, Yamal, Kane, Ronaldo or Messi, there would be such an outrage that a change would probably happen.

We all know if Messi did that, he wouldn't even have got a talking to by that ref.
Messi just this cup spikes up to back of leg. No red card.
Look into that ref.

That doesn't justify anything? If 2 players fight for a ball you have no idea where the other player may put his leg and accidentally step on him. Injuries happen all the time in sports. You don't just rig a world cup tournament by removing a player and then playing 10 vs 11 AND missing the next game all because a guy moved his leg where you were stepping while fighting for a ball.

Unfortunately, it’s the way it is. You can argue that the ref should not have been alerted to it by VAR. You can argue incidental contact. You can even argue it wouldn’t have been a red against Messi.

But take it from a guy that has been watching soccer for most of his life, that was a worthy red based on that ankle getting stepped on like that.

What Catman said. None of us like the end result and it may cost us our next game but I looked up possible reasons for a red card and then looked at reactions online and most who follow the sport regularly said it was a red card. One person said most red cards are for accidental contact but the cards and harsh punishment exist because if they didn't, snapped ankles, broken legs, and careers would be ended a lot more frequently. And I know someone in one of these threads mentioned some sort of hatred of America being the cause for the card. Nope, not it either. What we're seeing in N. America is the best of us right now. People from around the world showing up, having fun, embracing different cultures and then being embraced and welcomed as well.

Obviously I want us to continue winning but I won't pretend like the World Cup equals UK in the Final Four with UofL, Duke, and KU. I saw the play and looked at what longtime fans were saying about punishment.

Bottom line is that is a red card in any serious league in the world.
