I remember reading a decade ago or so an article written by a sports finance guy that actually praised the Mets and scolded Bobby Bo for this deal. They pay it off with interest income and he could have done more with a lump sum.

Bobby Bonilla is also receiving a $500k check from the Orioles today. He's been receiving that since 2004 from the O's, with the final payment on July 1, 2028. I'd be walking like Mr. McMahon to the mailbox to get that second check.

I saw an interview with Matt Millen last year - he had signed a contract worth $8MM - I think with Washington - he has been paid $250K a year, every year for the last 30 or so years. It's not like Bobby Bonilla, but it's probably similar to what a lot of pro athletes do.

There are literally dozens of former MLB players receiving deferred payments from former teams. Chris Davis will receive $3.5M per year from the Orioles thru 2037. Max Scherzer gets $15M per year thru 2028 from the Nats. The Bonilla arrangement, for some reason, gets far more attention than the others.

I’m not entirely positive, and feel free to correct me, oh omnipotent board, but the Mets felt that way because they were heavily invested with Bernie Madoff. His returns were too good to be true and, if I’m recalling events correctly, that’s why it’s a great deal for him and a bad deal for Mets management.

That's certainly part of it, but they have obviously paid their bills and met all their obligations since then. It's sort of like a lottery jackpot. Do you want the lump sum or do you want something different, almost like a trust fund? Some people are better with money than others.

I just remember the Wilpons lost a lot of money and had plenty of obligations. It’s probably a reason why they sold the team.
