If this holds true - are we hiring a football and basketball coach?

I think that list is pretty accurate. And I do not believe we will be looking for a new basketball coach.

As much as I have enjoyed MSU basketball, it is the sport that is going to get the short end of the stick when we allocate money. And our basketball money guys, as awesome and as generous as they have been, do not have the pockets by themselves to compete in the new environment where top tier guys are getting $2 million plus per year.

Do we know about what the buyout is there? Damn that's disappointing, it seems like Jans was really close to getting us back to where making the tournament was a reasonable yearly expectation for Men's Basketball - maybe not make it every year, but for all the sub-par seasons there would be some really good ones sprinkled in.

I never recall men’s sports being this bleak at MSU. Some of these coaches, like Lebby and Jans may be decent if they were at Texas A&M and had access to 20x as much resources.

I also have no clue why we invest heavily in baseball. I swear the national championship game this year probably didn’t have as many fans/viewers/excitement as the national checkers championship. It probably contributes to basketball being this bad.

I think if we are wise we would invest extremely big in our women’s programs as they are the future, 100%.

What are we talking about? 4 years and 3 tournament appearances. The 13 years of our program before that? 1 appearance in 13 years

I mean he kinda did raise the bar. So making the tournament 3 out of 4 years is sub par now? How many times did State go in the last 15 years?

And I do agree with the sentiment that he’s gone after this season if it’s another bad year.

Yeah I may have worded that clunky - Jans overall body of work isn't sub-par. I was kind of describing what we had for most of the Stansbury era - really good seasons balancing out the crappy ones, and a general overall expectation of making the NCAAT.

But yeah the current trajectory is NOT GREAT.

14th. Honestly, unless Lebby surprises nearly everyone I think Jan’s is safe for another year. And if we do what we need to do with the football coach, after what we did last year with the baseball coach, I’m ok with that.

Not going to debate the Stansbury tenure as it’s only been discussed a few times since 2012*** but I do think we’ll be middle of the pack in the SEC this year and make the tournament

I don't keep up with basketball all that much, other than watching a few games, but didn't we make the NCAA tournament in play-in games, then lost out first game? Is that really "making it"?

That only happened in his first year. And to answer your question being a play-in team you still hear your name called on selection Sunday so yes it counts as an appearance

I chuckle every time I read on here about how excited our basketball fans are about “making” and losing a play-in or 1st round game a tourney as 1 of 68 (now 76) teams, but those same fans continue to crap on baseball, that historically not only made the field of 64, but often gets to a Super Regional, the equivalent of a basketball Sweet 16. Something State basketball hasn’t done since old buck was a calf!

Theres a world where we finish last in both sports. Personally I think basketball is going to be awful. Like 12-13 wins bad. Football should be better but our schedule is a nightmare.

I’ll say that it still counts, but while it’s fine to put a feather in Jans’s cap for those appearances, it’s equally unimpressive that he hasn’t managed to win a single tournament game during that same span.

Stop it. This misconception is like wack-a-mole between the dbags and the ignorant, it just wont die out.

When we went, it wasnt a 'play in game'. It was a game in the tournament. All the teams were in the tournament- they just had an extra round for some 16 seeds and for some last 4 in seeds.

It was the 17ing tournament.

No because Men's basketball is the program that has to be sacrificed to the NIL/Rev Share gods. We'll limp along until Jan's contract runs out.

But it still wasn't one of the main 64.

From what I seem to have read not too long ago, that'll be changing before long with an expanded tournament up to 80-something teams.

I don’t know what we spend of either sport but have a strong suspicion that we trail most if not all other SEC schools. If that’s the case how do you know if your coach is good or not? It’s not a level playing field why you think Saben left ?

Gotta keep those 20,000 or so diehard MSU baseball fans happy.
That's 3x as many that show for basketball and about the same as football.

Football only sells season tickets to aboit 8k people. Woman and kids fill the other seats to get to 20k. Then 8-10k students and 10k or more visiting fans.

The tournament wasnt 64 teams.
Your comment is like saying 'but it wasnt part of the main 32'. There were more teams than that in the tournament.

Women get in free to football using your math I guess. Kids I suppose depends on the age, but your math says they get in free, too. Students had to pay at least some fee since I was in school, but you say they are freeloaders. Opposing fans get in free: I bet that's news to them, but maybe not knowing our brain dead administration.

And I was being generous at 20,000. Attendance record is about 16000. So the average is much less.

I will agree the baseball product is better. It dang sure ought to be seeing how much our dumbass administration emphasizes it.

I think he concern with Jan’s is he has been so bad in the portal and has built his success on the backs of guys he inherited and Hub who he wouldn’t have if Kermit were at OM.

No my point is people using football attendance to justify that football is more important to MSU fans, is flawed logic. I didn't say anyone gets in free.

I'm saying it isn't like football has 40k rabid fans while baseball has 20. I bet cha 90% of baseball ticket holders, hold football tickets.

Our football attendance is greatly increased by visitors.

Also inversely, I bet baseball would sell more tickets if they were available I have football tickets but not baseball. Because football is available and baseball isn't. However I like baseball too.

We've had worse basketball coaches than Jans is. I don't think there's a huge hurry to get rid of him. Lebby is another case altogether.

Food for thought: The College World Series championship series averaged 2 million viewers this year (the super regionals averaged around 600,000 viewers). 2.6 million watched us and Wake Forest in the Duke Mayo Bowl.

For comparison:

The 2026 College Football Playoff National Championship between Indiana and Miami averaged 30.1 million viewers.

The 2026 NCAA Men's Final Four games averaged 14.2 million viewers

Make of it what you will.

How many times was there a “last 4 in” with our other coaches? How many more appearances would Williams, Stansbury and Howland had?

This is the question to be asking and to compare Jans to. Stansbury alone would’ve had at least 3-4 other appearances I’d say.
