Piecing together information; olemiss, lsu, and ark were all after him. He supposedly grew up wanting to play at upig and was headed that way until we convinced him to visit. It sounds like they liked more than just the nil package and hopefully that is the case; I’m not excited about signing any mercenaries.

I assume he came here for the fall game so maybe he liked what he saw. It was an impressive crowd for fall baseball.

If it makes you feel any better, it's always kind of been like this in baseball. It was just coded as scholarship money. Because of the partials, your mix and match of money often determined where you signed.

So are we recruiting him with the expectation that he'll be our closer?
I would think so and then move into the rotation the following year. Logic says he and Bauer likely end up sharing the closing duties and both move into the starting rotation after next season. Bauer could be first out of the pen in close games, sort of like a fourth starter, which is what he had started doing this year. Going by numbers (ERA, BA, etc) the portal pitchers this year are looking a lot better than last year; they are also guys that other SEC schools are after which wasn’t the case last year.

Dang. We’ve got nearly half the FR all-America team on Our roster next year.
It's brilliant. You get a sort-of-proven guy (at least he's done well his freshman season), plus -- unlike a senior or draft eligible junior coming in -- you know he's got at least a couple of years here. I realize I'm stating the obvious, but I've never seen us focus so much on it as a real strategy and I'm loving it.

eta: Sorry to all the football-only guys. I know all this NIL money for a freshman AA pitcher who will make a huge impact in baseball could have gotten us a 4th punter in football.**

Why would telling him they've always been mercs make him feel better?

Mid week guy
Was a weekend starter before ucl repair and came back at the end of season. Should be back full strength. With injuries who knows where he falls. Could be mid week starter. Lots of options and competition. It'll be interesting to see where he falls if he gets it back to where he had been before injury.
