Will Duckworth be QB2?

Pretty excited about this kid (as excited as you can be as a player who isn't actively starting these days). He has all the physical tools. He obviously won't be starting this year. If he's not the starter next year, I assume he'll transfer.

I suppose it'll come down to him or Woods. Sadly, as a coach, I think you somewhat have to factor in "which one do want to keep in the program" because one of them is likely to transfer. Nobody is sticking around to wait their turn these days.

I think going forward you are going to see most teams with only one really talented QB on the roster and maybe one backup that could be starter material. The rest of the QB room will be players who know they aren't going to start at any P4 program. These prima donna highly touted kids all think they should be the starter, especially after they are on the team for a year. I think it will be very rare to see a QB wait for two or three years to be the starter.

Yep. It stinks b/c a huge part of the college football environment was watching your backups develop into starters. Seeing that player who waited 3 years finally get his chance to shine.

Given that Sellers will be gone and has the ''injury potential'' the way he plays, you need to have a package for both Woods and Duckworth and play them in games that matter to get a feel for their potential and whet their appetite to stay.

Beamer doesn't play backup QBs much at all.

Beamer doesn't or hasn't had too much opportunity to 'play the backup qb' just for experience. If you mean put in the backup to see what he can do if Sellers or whoever is struggling, I'd like that too but it has its risks depending on game situation as the defense will simply go man or hard zone with dialed up pressure. You dont really see a lot of programs playing significant backup qb time.

How many games do we have a comfortable lead in, going into the 4th quarter?

We have two patsies to start the season, and Mississippi st. Those might be our only chances.

This is why I liked the backup we had that we hired from Auburn. Not good enough to demand starter money from an SEC school, but experienced. He could come in off the bench and I wasnt worried that he could handle all the little things before the snap even, much less the pressure of the game.

Were I in charge, I might be tempted to keep an older qb on the roster like that.

I do understand how that could hurt the "develop the next guy" mentality.

We haven't had a ton of opportunities, but there have been games where he played Rattler or Sellers well into the 2nd half or 4th quarter when you sure thought he could have brought the backup in.

Granted, and in the old days I would be more inclined to think that way as well. I don’t think the reasons for leaving them in are because of negligence on Beamer’s part but because he or the staff felt the work was needed more by either rattler or sellers or whoever or by players who were in at the time that would benefit more from rattler or sellers being in, rather than having a Doty come in to hand off and throw swings; we can’t presume to know everything that’s going on or being worked on simply because ‘could have’, nor is there much profit in spending time on a guy that’s 50-50 at best returning. Having said that, I liked what I saw of Cutter Woods when he did get in.

To his detriment
keep in mind, we have had really bad offensive coordinators throughout Beamer's tenure. Loggains was fine, but not great. I am very interested to see what our new OC will do along with our new OL coach. As far as qb;s, I like Woods as number 2, he shows great potential, if we don;t play him, I can assure you someone else will, the kid is good!

I hope the new OC isn't too busy lining up escorts for recruits that he can't focus on the players we have.
