One thing I’ve learned following Twitter and message boards the past few days…a lot of people don’t know and/or understand the Offside rule in soccer, but it doesn’t stop them from criticizing refs, VAR, and FIFA. Same with added time. The amount of people bitching about Iran getting screwed by officiating is insane for a team that didn’t get at all screwed.
It doesn’t matter if you ref youth soccer, high school soccer, college soccer, or adult leagues. Fans and coaches constantly are calling out that the ref doesn’t know the rules. The players are generally more respectful, though not so much in adult leagues. Refs learn to ignore it, or just laugh about it, because if they don’t, it drives them away from being an official.
I give some deference to the aforementioned complainers, in that rules, or interpretation of such, do change a bit over the years. But it’s not too hard to learn the changes, and that’s what the refs have to call/enforce. More often, the people complaining have a terrible angle for the call, or just see everything through a prism of what’s good or bad for their team.
