Blast from the past Cameron Mills recruitment

Disclaimer: Don’t know Cameron well and he played after I graduated. So this comes from a bits of stories him and his dad have told me.

I meet both Terry and Cam at a charity golf scramble. Terry was in the cart with me and at first impression couldn’t believe the dichotomy between their personalities. Terry was a no nonsense type of guy and not much of a chatter.

I do remember being nervous to hit first since I suck at golf and their bags alone cost more than my clubs. But the two combined couldn’t hit the fairway. Terry chuckled after one drive actually went between his legs and told me they got the clubs in exchange for an autograph session at a sporting goods store.

Terry did tell me that he had a cousin ship off to basic about the same time he went to Uk. At a family function they exchanged stories of an Adolph Rupp practice and basic. His cousin told him he got the better deal between the two.

Back to Cameron.

Cameron grew up wanting to play for UK like his dad. But the scholarship offer never came. Georgia however wanted him. It was only after a long conversation with Hugh Durham that he decided that was his best bet. So he flew down there for an OV and was pretty sure he would commit before he left.
He said the weather was miserable as soon as he stepped on campus. Every time he would open a door the cold wind and rain would slap him on the face. The whole weekend was gloomy and depressing. Cameron saw it as a sign from God and left there without committing and would decide to walk on at UK a few days later.

Crazy to think how bad weather would effect a recruiting visit and how if it had turned out different we may have not had the run in 98 and one less championship.

Weather would absolutely influence where I would want to go to school, especially if I had been a high level athlete with offers to places with large differences in climate. For example, I'd be hard pressed to choose UK if I had offers from places such as Florida or Stanford or Arizona. Kentucky weather sucks.

If I was a high-level athlete I would for sure have Pepperdine and Hawaii on my official visit list.

How many dads of former players have you had deep conversations with that you remember so well as to share with us on this message board? These almost read as if you plugged in a prompt on ChatGPT and switched around a few details to make these unique enough.

Not saying you did that, but that is a vibe I get kinda.

Not too many. Raised in Western Ky and have a lot of connections there. Went to Uk in the 90's and just happen to have friends cool enough that they hung around a few players. Moved to Tennessee and my wife is very close to Poythress's family. I've coached a few yrs around WKY and Clarksville as well...lower level assistant roles. And as I said, met Terry and Cam by chance as they were assigned to my group at a golf scramble.

But I am just a stranger on the internet so enjoy or ignore at your own discretion.

He made one three pointer against Duke albeit at a crucial point in the game, but he wasn't a consistent minute player. Chris Harrison played more than him during his senior season in 1995.

He was very limited on what he could do, but as you said, that three against Duke and the one against Utah were crucial. Also, I believe he had the most pts in a single game than anyone on the team that yr.

Obviously he was a high impact player. But it makes me wonder about the butterfly effect if he didn't come. If he's not there to hit those shots do we beat Duke or Utah? Do we have a title. Sports are weird sometimes and is littered with unheralded heros that find themselves in the right place at the right time.

Looking back, he scored 31 points against Florida when white chocolate Jason Williams beat UK by himself at Rupp Arena. 1998 team was great but you had inexplicable losses like at home to an under .500 UL team who didn't have a starter over 6-7 and Florida.

Jesus, White Chocolate!! Hadn't thought about him in yrs. That was a player I hated and loved to watch play at the same time.

My brother (not an athlete, just a student) was down to two schools and visited both in the spring of his senior year. First a school in Minnesota and it was single digits and you went through tunnels to get from building to building. Then the next weekend he visited a school in the south where it was beautiful spring weather, 70s, blue skies. You can guess where he went to school.

Of course if he had visited in the summer it would’ve been 100° and 100% humidity in the south and beautiful 70° weather in Minnesota. Then again you don’t go to school in the summer.

Anyone believing these needs to get their head checked.
Why? Cameron Mills has spoken at my church and I also knew him a little when he was in FCA at UK. He is exactly that kind of guy. The only thing questionable is whether this poster really got Cameron to tell him that golfing. But Cameron likes to talk and more importantly, if he didn’t get the story from Cameron himself, how exactly would we suppose this random guy would be able to relate a story just like Cameron likes to tell, in which Cameron made an important life decision exactly the same way Cameron really does make important life decisions? Occam’s Razor comes into play here and it has been such a successful tool in science for a good reason. Doesn’t mean this tale is necessarily authentic, but all together it definitely means no one inclined to believe this guy has any reason to be ashamed about it. (At least not in this case. I haven’t read all these threads and it does make more sense to wonder how one unknown guy has all this info.)

Because every one of these posts by this guy has an ounce of public truth and then some small made up story that isn’t so far fetched that it matters but obviously fake. Keep believing these weirdos on the internet that type out these things for attention. You want me to make one up for you and post it in the same format he does?

Feel free. You seem to be under the impression I’m saying he’s legit though. I’m not interested in taking the trouble to either prove him right or prove him wrong in a responsible way and I wouldn’t try to do it in an irresponsible way. What I’m saying is there’s no evidence people who believe him need their heads checked. There really are people like Dave Kersey and Oscar Combs who cultivate the right kind of connections and harbor the right kind of sociable curiosity to collect this sort of tale. If you want to disbelieve it go ahead. I’m skeptical myself because as I said it sure seems like a lot to come out at once, and I guarantee if it’s authentic it wasn’t all collected at once.

I was there...UGH.

Great effort from Mills all for naught. One of my few home losses.

You should be skeptical. After all I’m just a stranger in the internet. Just rejoined here after being laid up with foot surgery and thought I would share some personal stories to kill time.

The Kyky story is the one that stirred up the Cal Cult the most. It’s not exactly a secret for a lot of folks in the Hopkinsville area. And one of his assistant coaches posted on here years ago with pretty much the same results.

That makes sense. One my closest friends is from Hopkinsville, btw. Sweet town. Only place I’ve ever seen cruising in person. Hope your foot heals quick!

Cruising was a big thing in Hoptown back in the 90's. I actually saw Cameron preach at a youth event at First Baptist Church in Hopkinsville. I remember him making a point about material things and taking his championship ring off and flinging it across the stage. It was fun watching him spend 30 minutes nervously searching for it after it was over.

Off topic, Did Corbin have a high school gym that looked like it came straight out of Hoosiers? I remember playing around there and if you tried to inbound the ball from the sideline, it was so narrow your feet were actually over the inbound line.
