Eustaqio’s winning goal to put them in the Round of 16 gives MLS players yet another massive goal in this tournament, to go along with: Musa equalizer vs England, Galarza game winner vs Turkey, Surman equalizer vs Egypt, Berhalter equalizer vs Turkey, Shaffelburg against Qatar, and Messi scoring on everyone in bunches for the Golden Boot lead. FOX, Apple TV, and league owners have to be loving this year’s tournament.

Also, @jaxhawk: Making any extra trips out to Soldier Field this summer 👀?

Been thinking about it. There's a Chicago Fire game in a month and I think Leeds plays Liverpool the next day. Doubt any World Cup players are in the squad but would still be fun to check out

I thought players were putting themselves off with those dumb drawn-out runups, but then guys started blasting it over or around the goal
not sure what to make of that whole PK session

Usually I am for the underdog, but Paraguay's style is coward soccer.
And, it paid off.
Excited to hear your thoughts on a football coach who wins 59 percent of the time, and who thinks anything more that a FG differential in the score is flashy.

Lots of drama so far in the first knockout round. Two game winners in stoppage, two games to penalties.
Dutch go out on penalties again.

With some time to reflect. Morocco were the far superior team. I hate that they go to ground with a stiff breeze but they out* played the heck out of the Dutch. I cannot imagine what it would take to get me off a WC field and the Dutch had two guys sub themselves off...and they walked off..... the Dutch unfortunately reinforced many of the Dutch stereotypes last night. And that #11 ogre they put in did nothing of value. He was slow as hell and didn't even win balls in the air. ( then missed the pen)

I do wonder how much Gakpo's tragedy affected the team mentality. They certainly didn't seem to play the same way they had. Was glad he personally scored, but they had a lot of momentum and some of that had to be lost. (He lost a child between the previous game and this one).

My small hometown has a substantial Mexican/Hispanic population (remnants from when they were labor force for the citrus industry that was the economic base of the area until 20ish years ago). Think I might go watch El Tri tonight at one of the local Mexican restaurants. I'll probably be the only gringo, unless I drag along my son - but I'm sure I'll see a lot of guys that I coached in the local youth league & that were my sons' league and high school teammates.
I'm sure it will be a great party, as long as they win.

Literally ever! No other round of 32 compares ;)

Anyway, the Dutch needed to not play scared. They respected Morocco so much that they changed too much for them.

Either way, the amount of missed pks (not saves) is getting out of hand. Put it on frame. Make the keeper save it.

I wonder if the stutter-stepping approach has increased the frequency of missed kicks. It looks extremely unnatural; I'd prefer a consistent, steady approach & a solid, powerful strike.

One of the main objections to expanding the WC was that it would result in more mismatches in both the group stage and the early elimination games. While there were some blowouts in Group, that's always the case...and the first 5 elimination games have all been terrific. So far, the expansion has been a success. The overall, worldwide quality of play is far higher than it was 20 or 30 years ago.

WC announcer pet peeve:

For the LOVE OF GOD stop using the phrase "start asking questions"

It's used over and over and over again in every game and it's f.ucking stupid in the context of sport.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER
