As I said last night, as a UK fan I have been fortunate enough to have been around a few former Cats in my day and thought I would share some stories to those that might be interested. Disclaimer, not every story is going to be wild and crazy and some of the info may have already been shared on here before. But remember its free. So enjoy...or don't. I make the same money either way.
I remember reading on here the buzz that he was headed to Florida or Memphis and laughing. It was always Kentucky. There were two schools he did give serious thought to though. Duke early on and Vandy was more of a serious player than people thought. Duke actually got in trouble for contacting him during a no contact period and backed off shortly after. Vandy was close to home and Alex is very close to his mom, grandmother and sister. Plus, the education angle. Alex dreamed about working for Nike more than he dreamed about playing in the NBA,. UK's Nike connection and the fact they offered his sister a volleyball scholly sealed the deal.
The funniest part of his recruitment was the Memphis pitch. Josh Pastner barely talked to him but instead had Luke Walton call him several times just to brag about his NBA days. Not very effective and they were never seriously considered.
My interaction with Cal.
Got to meet him at Northeast High in Clarksville, Tn. Was super excited and immediately let him know I was a UK fan. Not sure what I was expecting from that, but what I got wasn't it. He immediately tried to sell me his app that tracked his recruiting for a monthly charge. It was odd but I will say, what you see from him is what you get. He's the same behind closed doors as he is in front of the cameras.
