The Mississippi State fanbase I know when it comes to NIL

I think Mississippi State fans generally fall into five groups. I know multiple people in every one of them.

Group 1: The Dreamers

"We should be competing for national championships. Just go get every five-star. Why wouldn't they want to come to Starkville?"

They believe State should be able to compete with anyone if we just spend enough. They faithfully buy season tickets and merchandise, but usually aren't major NIL contributors. They can't understand why we're still falling behind.

Group 2: The Traditionalists

"This new offense isn't real football. Build the lines, run the ball, play defense. King Jackie forever."

They believe the blueprint for success is the one that worked decades ago. Many have the ability to give, but they're not interested in funding the current direction of college football or Jeff Lebby's vision.

Group 3: The Realists (or Pessimists, depending on who you ask)

"We'll never consistently compete. We should just be thankful we're in the SEC."

Their expectations are low, and disappointment has become the default. Most don't donate much and rarely buy season tickets, though they still cheer for State every Saturday.

Group 4: Baseball First

"Football and basketball are uphill battles, but baseball is where we can be elite."

This group has resources and isn't afraid to spend them—especially when it comes to baseball. They'll gladly invest in Dudy Noble, but don't expect them to write a check for a linebacker.

Group 5: The Nostalgic Fans

"I still love Mississippi State and college sports, but I can't get behind paying players."

These are longtime supporters who built the program through donations and season tickets. NIL, the transfer portal, and the professionalization of college athletics have pushed many of them to slowly step away.

The interesting thing is that none of these groups are "bad" fans. They all love Mississippi State—they just have very different ideas about what the program should be and how we should get there. I'm finding myself in Group 5 more and more every year. I just can't get behind college athletes making millions.

#2 has been proven in my opinion. Unfortunately there isn’t any more build the lines and run the ball in the current era. You have to buy the lines annually and you’ve got to spend a bunch of money to do it. As soon as you start building anything somebody will come along and buy what you’ve got then you start over. What would really help level the playing field is if half the transfer “deal” went to the player and half to the school that invested in developing the player.

I’m a gumbo of all of this. Depending on who’s cooking.
Current administration has me very pessimistic, at least about football and basketball.

Im fine with the players getting paid its the no contracts and no eligibility rules that make me like it less than less. Teams bringing pro basketball players back to college is indefensible. Schools are weaponizing local judges to win games. That goes against everything college sports used to be. The old rules were often stupid and arbitrary but at least there were rules

I think the whole thing needs a salary cap. X amount per year whole team. Then some kind of restrictions on portal. I mean they would be under contract. Give the school the power to cancel or renegotiate the compensation based on performance. Like any other job

Need a sixth category for fans who just can’t stomach anymore criminally stupid mismanagement.
That’s basically where my portion of #3 comes in. I’m somewhere around a 30/30/20/20 split amongst the last 4 groups, but my pessimism isn’t lost hope. It’s utter lack of trust and faith in our current brain trust from the president on down. When they get serious about building a football program, I will too

I'm a 3-4 guy. Why do they have classifications in high school ? Population numbers equate to money/alumni. What was NIL for playoff teams last year ? North of 30 mill a year will thin us out.

Leach had no nil money to work with and went 9-4. I’m not asking to make the playoffs. Just give me a competent HC to run a
Program. Arnett and Lebby are not
That.

I used to be portions of 1,2,3,and 4. All of that is gone and now I am a solid 5. Attended with season tickets from age 6 through 69. Have not bought tickets for 2 years now. We had a good run, but it is over.

Like some others said, I guess Im a 5 but with the caveat that I dont mind paying players, I just think the current system is unsupportable. Get things under control and im a Group 1 lean.

When your baseball coach goes after top ranked talent, but you would rather write check for a 2-mid3 star linebacker because that's all your football coach can attract, enough said!

Ya’ll want me to support the following in football:
We have AD that has never been a AD before, is from Oklahoma, knows nothing about MSU or the state of Mississippi. This AD hires a football head coach that has never been a head coach before and this coach is from Oklahoma, sure they may not have know each other at Oklahoma but the hire stinks of good ol boy networking.

This coach hires a defensive coordinator that had never been a D coordinator. This D coordinator had been a special teams coach. This head coach then hires D coordinator that had been at MSU previously and run out of town previously for screwing up an elite head coach’s offense and lying to players. This D coordinator had been fired from his last job because he was caught driving thru a fast food restaurant’s drive thru naked.

This head coach has recruited players that are almost exclusively 3star players and bought players that would never see the field of play of other SEC teams.

AND YOU WANT ME TO SUPPORT THIS?

Get back to me when you want to get a real football program.

I'm a realist for sure, been let down too many times in my 53 years. It's sucked the optimism out of me.

y’all need to let this go. It’s not like anyone brings up the incident where Randy Travis wrecked driving naked drunk in his 98 trans am on a regular basis still. Stuff happens.

I’m to the point for football that if State it’s on tv, I’ll watch it. That has become the limit to my fandom.

I try to listen to all of the baseball games on the radio and missed maybe two games this year.

I haven’t watched or listened to basketball game in years.

I don’t trust MSU Athletics’ (and other universities’) administration of NIL.

I want transparency from all universities (within reason— after all, private universities don’t have to respond to FOIAs) before I’m willing to give.

IOW, why should I give when I think…

Only state fan read a rumor on line that was out as sarcasm and humor and take it as the gospel.
this fan base would look for any reason not to give.

Maybe the rumor is untrue. But win one SEC game in two years is really setting the world on fire.

The only way as a alumni/fan to show this administration that I am not happy in the direction of the program is to withhold my support.

I’m Group 6.

We pay for our kids to play youth sports. We pay for special coaching in hopes that our kid gets to play high school sports.
We pay services to highlights our kids’ accomplishments in hopes they get the opportunity to play in college.
We pay for the right to pay for tickets to watch our kid play in college.
If we want to watch our kid’s team win any games, we need to pay the coaches. If we want the coaches to win any games we need to pay for the good kids to play at our school.
If our kids do well enough in college they may get paid to play on a NFL TV package that we pay for.
If they aren’t good enough, well then “Welcome to the Machine”.

Hey boss, remind me again how I win at this game?

You strike me as a fan who probably wouldn’t give no matter who the coach is. Arenett Johns Montgomery Brock Warren are major up grades from the previous staff. Add in coaches like Thompson Lindsey Roscoe and Rhodes you start to see a program starting to develop.. but no let’s post a stupid rumor..
