There’s no reason for them to. It wasn’t them that felt the resentment from the schools on Tobacco Road in the early 70’s when we started beating all the other schools in the ACC in basketball. It wasn’t them that had a player (Mike Grosso) ruled ineligible by a kangaroo court consisting of only the athletic directors of North Carolina and Duke. It wasn’t them that felt the need to leave the ACC because the athletic eligibility requirements for the ACC exceeded those of the NCAA, only to get no support from the other schools in the conference, then to have the ACC lower the requirements the year after South Carolina left. F the Tarholes!

old school Gamecock fans are really the only ones that have a deep "hatred" for North Carolina, due to the ACC days and Frank McGuire, younger folks don't see it as a rivalry other than the states are close and we compete for recruits.

That is the perfect description of what I'm talking about. They don't think about South Carolina at all.
I heard a story about a UGA fan in Chicago wearing a red "G" logo hat. More than one person asked him "what's the deal with the red Packers hat?".
We started beating them in the late '60s. As @atlanta cock# stated, it was Mike Grosso who got screwed over. McGuire tried to exploit a loophole in recruiting regulations. And McGuire did violate the spirit of the law, but I imagine Tobacco Road schools would have done the same thing given the opportunity.
Actually, Dook gave serious consideration to leaving the ACC during the Grosso era due to academics - they wanted stricter standards.
There was a court case against the ACC's standards which was ruled in favour of the plaintiffs - about a year or so after we left the league. That was why the league lowered the requirements - it had nothing to do with our secession. Had we been patient like Clemron, things would have turned out differently for us.
Leaving the ACC was one in a fairly long list of bonehead moves by SC athletics over the years.
Actually, we made overtures about rejoining about a year after we left. I believe the person who suggested it or actually attempted a back door contact was T. Eston Marchant.
I thought it was a few years later. But I heard that overtures were made in the mid 70s. Somthing along the lines offinancial reparations, i.e., all income during those few years would have to be split with the remaining 7 members. But would the remaining 7 have been willing to recalculate and split the revenues 8 ways instead of 7?.
And when the ACC poached the Big East in the early 2000s, they quietly asked USC if there was any interest in returning to the ACC. That inquiry was made 20 years too late.
I pine for the 8-member league we left, not the bloated conference it has become.
By 2005, there were too many $$$ at stake to go back to the ACC.
It depends upon the vintage of the fans. You'd have to have been there when the animosity was ripe.
Their ignorance is reason enough to hate them.
I was born after SC left the ACC, so my hatred for UNC has nothng to with the old ACC rivalries. I've just come to hate them based on the UNC fans I've met over the years.
I think someone would have to look at newspaper articles from the 1960s and view recordings of ACC basketball games if available (especially those involing USC) to begin to even get an inkling about the anomosity.
When you have a league rival scared to come to your place, as with Duke not willing to come here the year the Grosso ruling came down, that shows all you need to see. But there was plenty more to see than that.
From what I read, the ACC gave all member schools the option to not play USC in basketball that season without penalty. Dook was the only member to exercise that option.
