Might be AOL on this announcement, but I don't see anything on the forum. NCAA just voted to implement a new 5 years to play 5. The clock starts following initial full-time enrollment, or following the 19th birthday. Hopefully this gets rid of the Diego Pavia/Carson Beck types.

Don't some of the service academy teams (Army, Navy, Air Force) typically have players that fulfill a couple years of military requirements prior to starting their athletic careers? I certainly hope those schools are granted some sort of exception.

I think I read that there are exceptions for military service and religious missions. Someone can correct me if I am mistaken.

For service academies, I believe the mandatory military requirement occurs AFTER graduation.

This. I'm sure they don't serve until after, that would seem obvious, since they come out of the academies as officers, correct. Hard to go serve and then get your officers training......

Mandatory service in Israel and Germany would be part of that exception. Going into the US military after having gh school.

It is an exception that will not be granted much even if someone does serve in the military. To be eligible you cannot compete in organized sports during those years.

Spot on what a muck this is going to turn out to be
Yup. If the NCAA said you have 10 years to play 5 years, someone would sue for an 11th year. There is no winning unless Congress steps in, provides a specific exemption and slams the door on litigation.
If they can't do that, they should at least put in a place a law that states if you sue for more eligibility and lose, you get to pay all of the court costs for both sides and the debt isn't dischargeable through bankruptcy. That would put a dent in this crap.

Wonderful, so we’ll still get to enjoy watching the standard 27 y/o BYU athletes married with two kids.

So someone who decides to be a plumber for four years after high school, then decides to go to college and walk on to the football team, would have only 1-2 years of eligibility?

Just when we were finally past all the extra covid years we get something new. Curious who on football team may take advantage with this. McNeal is first guy comes to mind if he wants to play 4 more. Guess we don’t have to worry about 4 games and not burning red shirt anymore. Wish we could’ve had in place earlier for a guy like graves, X or Drew Stevens who never red shirted to come back.

Will be a lot of records with asterix, two asterixs, three asterixs in the books with how many years/games played it took to accomplish a certain milestone.

A simple rule that everyone can understand. Its about time.

Of course it will be challenged. Especially after they make the first exception.
