I've always said (cynically) that they may as well go directly to unlimited eligibility for all, because that's where the money is and I think that's where we're headed. Semi-pro NCAA. Not that I'm a fan of it...

Just curious what about this rule makes you say this? Seems like the opposite. The new rule is stated clearly with the handful of allowed exemptions being very black and white. If ever there was promise for some structure to come, this is it. I’m not holding my breath but this is at least a good first step.

I hope you're right. To my cynical mind, the only key part is "4-->5" and the rest is fluff to disguise the master plan, ha ha...

Yes - there’s that. But what’s really happening is that the games with redshirting are going away and instead of those “games” everyone is simply eligible during that time period making it all cut and dry.

In all seriousness, I think it's a good edict and I believe the NCAA is sincere about this. But I think the various entities in the bigger equation, who have been radically changing college sports in the past decade or so, will simply use it as a springboard for accomplishing their own objectives...

There’s nothing to sue over. Everyone is equal. Injuries are an unlucky break. They happen. By making it 5 years they are covering the 4 year span of a student athlete’s academic endeavor with a 1 year buffer. Setting age parameters around the years immediately following traditional high school graduation makes complete sense. Pay or not, that’s what playing for a college is about traditionally. The rule is logical.

Sure there is something to sue over. There always is. What was illogical about 5 years to play 4 ?

And sports like hockey generally have players play in juniors until they age out at 19 and then come to college at 20.
