Stats from another article about him entering the portal:

In 55 games this season, Mabeus hit for a .286 batting average, eight home runs and 31 RBI. He had two homers and 23 RBI as a freshman while hitting from a .257 average, so he improved on all of his numbers.

It seems like he’s a decent addition. Quick check shows he’s probably a slight downgrade from Milewski offensively, but a slight upgrade defensively.

2026 Stats:

OPS
Milewski - .947
Mabeus - .890

Fielding %
Milewski -.995
Mabeus - .993

Passed Balls
Milewski - 6
Mabeus - 3

Caught stealing
Milewski 8-29
Mabeus 13-29

It’s kind of hard to gauge how big either gap is without knowing how much of KM’s early season struggles were health related.

Worst-case is that he’s a known commodity at the C position that we can plug in if Milewski moves on to pro ball.

Best-case is he and Milewski battle it out for the position, with the loser of the battle moving to 1B / OF / DH / backup C.

Those caught stealing stats are not correct.
Milewski - 8/38 21%
Maebus - 13/29 45%

Either they don’t steal as much in the Big10 or not as many teams wanted to test his arm. But Maebus threw out runners at a much higher percentage than Milewski.

In basically the same number of starts Milewski has twice as many passed balls and Mabeus threw out 63% more runners. That's way more than a slight upgrade defensively.

Milewski had a .238 batting average with 30 hits including 13 HRs, .568 slg. Mabeus had a .286 with 50 hits including 8 HRs, .509 slg.

Statistically Mabeus is a better hitter too. I will give Milewski credit that he hit in the SEC and was injured so that would affect his hitting and maybe a few of the passed balls but several of Miewski's passed balls were off of his mitt when it was not close to the ground. I might be missremembering some of those terrible passed balls that were actually the other two catchers, but I know a couple of them were him.

Hopefully Milewski stays, recovers, and makes a big jump and Mabeus plays great too. This way the two of them could alternate playing C, 1st, or DH. That way we would always have a good catcher with fresh legs.

Teams were very willing to send base runners against our catchers this season.

I'd have to believe that if the staff is considering him their starting catcher, then they're probably viewing Lew as their everyday 1B/DH as well. Looking at the full body of work, the difference between the two doesn't seem all that significant.

I’m not saying that’s an OM name but they’ve confused us before!
Lmao I just posted on the name before seeing your post but you aren’t really wrong. Either way really glad to have him and hope he turns into a great player for us. Honestly there’s no reason we shouldn’t have at least a top 3 recruiting class this year under our couch with kids that’s also wanna play ball and build something with Jacob Parker especially and others!

A lot of baseball programs, and franchises, disagree with you.
For 4 games per week, there’s no need to do much rotation at catcher. If you're playing 6-7 games per week, then yeah, give your starter a couple days off. But that's built into the college schedule.

I love Lew, but this dude is much, much better. His defensive runs saved and framing are miles ahead of Lew and one of the best in the country. Elite defensive guy and underlying #’s say he could improve a good bit at the plate with some changes to his swing
