We lost 8 games by double digits n year 1. That seems to be forgotten when discussing it. Yes, we had a lot of great wins too but it was kinda a wash with head scratchers as well.
What seems to be forgotten we were missing 3 starters/key players. I am certain those double digits loss games would have been much different results with the entire team healthy. I don't think you can name any team in all of college BB that were missing 3 starters/key players in the SEC that would have even had a winning record.

Playing it in the middle. I have been pretty vocal with some of my displeasure with his coaching/recruiting. I think he has put together a pretty good roster this offseason. Year three is probably going to be the decision-maker good or bad on Pope for me.

Highly question whether he has the XO's to make it happen, especially defensively. Also wonder if he can motivate his team into playing it. Feels like a E8 max kind of coach, similar to Cal.

Hate to be pessimistic but unless something has changed over the summer Pope is still a .630 win percentage coach. I think we'll find out early in the season with Kansas. It's sounds stupid but I really think this game is a must win for him.

I am absolutely confident that Pope is unlikely to crush anything other than the hopes and dreams of a select few around here.

Of course, this is the time of year for irrational optimism and nonstop cheerleading. Every player on the roster is suddenly better than the ones who chose not to come here. Pope is now considered an elite recruiter because he landed a highly regarded prospect from outside Kentucky. Never mind that he caught a huge break with Milan—without that, this upcoming season could have looked very different.

Yet somehow, people continue to fall head over heels for a coach with a mid-major résumé who often behaves like a toddler after losses

If you're satisfied with Sweet 16 appearances, then sure—Pope will absolutely crush it. If the standard is national championships, I'm not nearly as convinced. Remember- 64% that's Pope. 233-134 (per chatgpt). No regular season conference championships, no conference tournament championships...
