Five in Five - What Might That Look Like?

It may be more difficult for some teams to stockpile talent with five in five. If you're a young #2 or #3 guy at your weight on a top team, will you really wait around for the opportunity to wrestle varsity in two years or so? Why not transfer (you get ONE), and be a starter on another team with decent coaching. As you said on your site, "share the wealth."

5 for 5 JUST PASSED
Crazy… I feel like this will make so much more parity in the sport. This will give Nasir another year of eligibility, if he wanted it.

Wonder if any kids from the 2026 class choose a different home. Some of them will be sitting for 2-3 years, especially in OkieSt. and PSU.

Will the Mormon religion gain people now with the mission to be an Olympic athlete and train at an RTC

Hopefully we don’t lose anybody but most of our big recruits will probably have to sit a year. Kenny and shamus will have crookham or Nasir ahead of them. Maybe one of them could beat Nasir if they’re big enough?Maybe borge could get up to 57 and battle it out with Amato or block moves up and Borge, Duffy, and youngblut battle for 49. Joe Bachman will have to beat out Schubert to start right away.

If it’s an issue for Iowa, it’ll be more of an issue for PSU and Oklahoma State. Maybe this will push some wrestlers to lesser wrestling schools so they can get on the mat.

It's certainly going to be interesting. I don't think much will change right now. Plus the best guys want to wrestle for the best programs.

Wonder if Mocco is going to sit? Who is coming in next year for 33? I would think recruits now will want their 5 years to compete at Nattys.

i don't think the "demand" for 5 years will be that prevalent. At least not initially, and certainly not for the better teams.

Mocco is ineligible for a grey shirt, so his clock will start in the fall.

You still have to make the lineup to wrestle at the best programs. I guess we will see if they are willing to give up 2 or 3 years to wrestle at top programs. Personally, I don't think good recruits will and they will be looking somewhere they can compete.

So am I correct in the statement that Nasir is the only non-incoming recruit impacted by this. Meaning he will now have two more years at Iowa.

You really think elite guys are going to go to a say, Clarion, just to start for 2 years?

Those guys don't think like that.

I bet we see top recruits wanting to start day 1 without the medical shirts to fall back on.

Wonder if FCA wrestling will be a path people take

The top elite guys wont have to but they are also going to want 5 years. There is plenty of good rooms for other top recruits to go to (in the Big Ten alone). I doubt theyre going to sit for a year without an oly or med shirt to fall back on to get 4 years.

So hypothetically, could an incoming 2026 recruit opt into the old rules, grey shirt in 2027 then redshirt in 2028?

WOnder if it sticks. Seems like every time the NCAA tries to do something, they get sued and lose.

No only athletes who were enrolled already
So is the part where the reporter writes that this applies to incoming recruits just untrue? That sucks, could have been helpful w/ regards to Mocco.

Ah. I see what you're saying.

So yes, Mocco could pick the old rules or the new rules. So, technically, yes. He should have the ability to greyshirt, redshirt. He would get 4 years if Kueter wrestles this year and next.

My understanding was it starts this August and the only ones who can pick a path are those who were already enrolled in college

August is the fall for 2027 class. They're 26/27 college class

Nope. Read what I said in bold. fall of 2027 - those guys don't get a choice. See below:

For students enrolling full time in college for the first time in fall 2026 and current student-athletes with eligibility remaining after the 2025-26 academic year, Division I schools will apply the previous rules (allowing four seasons of competition within five years) or the age-based model, whichever results in the most favorable outcome for each individual.
