NCAA close to passing 5 for 5 rule and Lawsuits seem to be already coming

There are about to be 1000 more players entering the transfer portal; all 5th year seniors.

Teams who still have holes on their rosters may end up looking really good, IF they can find the money to buy the guys they want.

Gonna get real messy when teams start kicking out some guys they accepted as transfers in order to make room to bring back their graduated seniors.

I swear, the NCAA is run by morons.

God god, have you not heard he’s in the draft tonight
I could see some people getting drafted then coming back to college if this court stuff goes through. Some of these guys can make way more in college. But a guy like Oweh I figure would stay in the NBA if they gave him a chance. Kind of like take it while it's there because he might not get drafted next year.

I for one think Oweh would be a terrible fit for this team, don’t think he would be willing to take a secondary role

It was fine until the courts allowed NIL and transfers.
The NCAA is who decided to allow NIL.

They were dumb enough not to realize that by allowing NIL, they opened themselves up to all sorts of antitrust lawsuits.

They could stop the lawsuits tomorrow by declaring the players employees and allowing them to collectively bargain to set a salary cap, eligibility rules, transfer rules, etc... But again, the NCAA is run by idiots. And preserving the myth of the student athlete is more important to them than actually getting their sports under control.

So the lawsuits will continue. And every rules change they make will be challenged.

*****, the courts in CA made them do NIL in that state (other states were going forward with it too). The NCAA had to respond with something. Making them employees won't do dick.

Who would he be secondary to? Not saying I want him back because I don't even think there's a chance but I'm not sure who he would play behind. Definitely a starter.

Because college sports are for college aged athletes
I’m really not sure what that means people over 25 go to college and a lot of people take 1-2 years off after high school, I guess probably not elite athletes though so I guess I see where it’s coming from. But the odd 24+ baller shouldn’t be barred from playing.

About 40% are 20-24 and about 40% are 25+ now.

18-24 is a majority but not a crazily overwhelming one. Lots of more seasoned folks are in college so they are "college age".

I don't see how this limitation helps students of any age nor do I think it is any real benefit to.the program, it seems more like an excuse for the NCAA to not process paperwork/hide from suits based on their decisions and a little pointless salve to those feeling put out about the "inmates running the asylum".

I don't care if someone wants to seve in the military, has injuries to fight through, has a family situation, wants a break, does an internship, goes to the Peace Corp, goes on a mission, back packs Europe, or plain old needs to get their stuff together.

Four or five in whenever it takes is not a cell of skin off my nose.

Small bore issue anyway, five minutes ago it was pulling hen's teeth to get them to stay now probably the same folks are bothered they won't leave.

I think I agree with what you’re saying. If you’re good enough to make a team after missing extended time due to etc. then let old rules stay no need to arbitrarily set age limitations.

basically meritocracy

Two main villains in this story: judges and the NCAA.

Forever, the ncaa refused to share even a sliver of their fortune made on the backs of athletes. Then the courts lost their minds in swinging things way too far in the other direction.

The actual rule about the ncaa is easy: they need REASONABLE enforcement ability. The hard part is defining reasonable.

Here is what is surely reasonable: age limits, length of participation limits, enforcement against student athletes gambling. Those should be easy.

What gets iffier is pay for play. Bad as I hate it, I actually think that is an unreasonable restriction.

It would work, but you absolutely need Kam and Milan on the court at the same time. Maybe Wilkins is your 6th man in that scenario, and if he breaks through, then Diallo becomes your 6th man with Oweh at the 2, Williams and Milan at the forward spots.

I don't think you can successfully play Diallo, Wilkins, and Oweh together in a lineup where you expect to make a lot of three point shots, even if Milan is your stretch 4.

They're going to be a killer-level transition team. They'd obviously be even better in transition with Oweh out there.

Even still, I'd take a pass on bringing him back if you have the chance to pick up another big or combo guard who can shoot the ball.

Got to have some sort of rules and structure.

Religious exemption could make for some interesting legal battles down the road. Seems to heavily favor Mormons as mandatory mission is their thing. Can evangelicals, Catholics, Jews, Muslims all take a year for some religious reason?

What about agnostic and atheist athletes?

Same for pregnancy. Does the basketball player who got the volleyball player pregnant get a year?

Very nit picky as most athletes aren’t trying to get pregnant in their prime, but again makes for interesting legal debate, scholarship, and precedent.

What about the players from the year before that can no longer apply for a sixth year due to injury issues? Are they going to sue.

The NCAA has to be able to make some rules and they have to be effective at some point.

Shawn Phillips on his 3rd SEC school (plus Arizona St)

We can't say much as Kepnang is a class of 2020 player on his 3rd school in his 7th year of college.
