No he’s been pretty defensive his whole career. A lot of success but throughout his whole career in high level matches he’s consistently in 1 takedown matches.
So we have a kid in late June mixing it up with nationally-rated kids, and our take on it is of a negative nature? Maybe in your eyes he would have been better staying home to drink beer and play euchre with his buddies? Not sure of your background, and definitely not asking, but just how would you have a young stud get better against top competition other than going out and laying it on the line like a man, and learning from it?

These kids commit to Iowa and most likely read this stuff, why not just support them and let his coaches and inner circle sharpen him? Yes, you are entitled to your opinion, and of course this is a message board, etc., but how about a bit more from the full side of the glass? Not intending to lecture anyone, just wishing we could embrace these kids a bit more from the positive end so that they feel the power from the most passionate wrestling fanbase in the world.

Hey Bachman kid, way to go stud, glad you put your foot on the line against some other studs... keep hammering!

All true and good recommendations, Im pretty much a Hawk Homer that mostly has the good comments. Im not sure how the Illhawk posts should be taken. Hawks best wrestler on their roster right now is very defensive wrestler and wins 1 takedown matches against top 10s all the time. I don't think young athletes are as offended as you think or even read message boards much. They have grown up with so much public media electronically, I don't think the best young athletes allow good or bad comments get in the way of their goals.

You're crazy if you don't think athletes read this sht. Twitter, FB, the message boards. They consume it all. Hell, our HC does. (or at least he gets the full reports of the boards going ons)

People are clueless and think people don't read it. Many staffs have someone who monitors the boards. Oklahoma st staff has made it a point to control the narrative on the boards. I know you already know this but most don't

I grew up without electronic media but top amateur athletes today are endlessly talked about from several platforms. I've heard Hawk wrestlers interviews where they have spoken out about negative comments of team members or themselves. I don't think highly driven top wrestlers are going to let random comments get in the way of their goals. May actually drive them more.

Of course the kids read it, and so does mom, dad, and grandma. Select few programs have a following on a message board like Iowa, maybe none. Many sit back and constantly complain about our current situation, and many of them transfer this anger toward kids that have not even left high school yet. Spare me the nil money excuse, these are kids that are excelling at the sport we love! Why in the world would we do anything but encouage them? Again, our fanbase is the envy of all, would it not be wise to use this to our advantage 24/7? We have no way of knowing the magnitude of this board.... pull the studs in vs critiquing every move they make....

When I watch an Iowa meet with my dog and a miller lite, I get irritated and cuss.... its human nature; I want us to win every match by fall. Maybe its my age, but I have never understood the need to go on a public forum and undermine the kids and program that allows me to proudly wear my Iowa wrestling hoodies.

Because of precisely that. It's human nature. This is a community. and a pretty egalitarian one at that. Some people are all positive, some people do both, some are straight up trolls.

The board is exactly what its supposed to be (when we have mods). A place talk about Iowa wrestling and some other stuff that us fans want. It's not our job to be "nice," per say.

It’s just being realistic. Someone said that he was much more offensive when he was at the lighter weights which isn’t true. If you’ve watched Joe wrestle you’d see a lot of one takedown matches. He wins the large majority of those and nobody is saying he isn’t a good wrestler so no need to cry.

Most don't... they must be the "casuals" you refered to... not the enlightened like you.

Dake just talked about how it bothered him reading it and Cael told him to stop looking at social media. Dake said he has and it's helped

I would strongly discourage any athlete competing D1 or internationally, to not have social media downloaded on their phone. Hell even if you are a top high school guy, don’t have it. If it’s needed for NIL, someone should be running it for you.

You would discourage them…to not have social media…

That’s twisted.

Why not just encourage them…to have social media…

If Oklahoma State had a gulag, they’d have you in chains and breaking rocks for hurting feelings
