Usually guys who win majors get good breaks. It’s the difference out there but take 16 yesterday. He hits one way left in the fescue. That was not a good lie and he somehow chopped it out over that bunker and made birdie. That was a world class shot out of that.
Oh he hit a bunch of great shots. Just saying on a course where only three players ended under par, he had a bunch of wayward shots where he didn’t have to hit “great” shots to get up and down.

He deserved the win no doubt.

No doubt he caught some breaks hitting it wild off the tee.

I’ll drop the shanks thing after this but your buddy didn’t have the shanks, he choked under pressure. The shanks aren’t a one swing thing. I only brought it up because if you’ve ever seen anyone with the actual shanks, it’s the damndest thing you’ll see.
I’ve had the shanks. Totally mental. State tournament my junior year in regionals I had the shanks the entire round. Started on hole 2, shanked an 8 iron OB right. Had them all day. Totally lost confidence after that shot and couldn’t get past it.

The yips are all mental. Figure that out and you will be able to use your standard grip. I bet you always think you will pull or push a 5 footer no matter what the line is before you even approach the shot. It’s like shanking the ball. Fix the fear of it and it will stop happening if you have a decent swing that is. I bet you would benefit from a zero torque putter more than anything. Try that too. If you use a toe hang putter you won’t manipulate the face as much on your stroke.
That’s what I did. I bought the LAB DF3i zero torque and I’m putting much better. Been sinking one or two long 15 footers per round now, which I never used to do but only had it couple months. It does take getting used to though. You have to line up a bit behind the ball to hit it on the up swing but it’s very forgiving.

When I've had the shanks, its just some bad muscle memory that is hard for me to get past. Just take some time off, and I'm usually fine after that muscle memory is forgotten.

I agree from 15 feet in they help a ton. I think lag putting is harder with them though. The cost is ridiculous though, most clubs these days are. I’m happy Wilson, Tour Edge, and Lazarus have made ZT options for around $200 that preform great. I think I paid $250 for my Scotty Cameron Studio Select in 2005. That was top of the market too. Now they are $650 putters like Lab, Bettanardi, Scotty, TM, Even Odyssey ZT are around $450.

I had never had them before or after. But once I hit one I couldn’t get past it.

You gotta love it when somebody on the internet thinks they've diagnosed your swing issue.

It's NOT mental in my case. There are different cases of yips. If you take the putter back with just your right hand, sometimes it wiggles on the downstroke, that's a physical yip. I don't have a fear, it's a muscle tension issue.

I'm actually an excellent putter. And zero torque putters are a HUGE scam. Four to seven hundred bucks for a custom putter that doesn't even have my name engraved, and as soon as you grip the putter you are putting 400x the pressure needed to counter the torque the putter claims to remove. I have an expensive putter but for a while I used a Ray Cook $50 special and hit some amazing putts. The only reason I shelved it was because it goes "DING!" when you hit it and it got on my nerves.

One thing I’ve learned recently about lag putting is determining your dominant eye. So from a long distance I’m very right eye dominant and after lining up the putt, as a right handed, I’d stand over the ball but adjust a little because tilting my head toward the ball I’d readjust due to looking at the hole with my left eye. My left eye was actually seeing the hole in the wrong spot. So I’ve learned to close that eye when looking at the hole to make sure I’ve lined it up properly. It’s helped a lot and my lag putting is really good now. If you aren’t familiar with determining your dominant eye it’s a simple test. Just google it.
