Rumors suggest BYU transfer point guard Rob Wright III didn't enjoy a very positive visit to Mark Pope's basketball program on Monday.

1.) The circumstances were a little different due to conference realignment. For most of the Pope era, BYU was a midmajor. They were in the WCC, same conference as Gonzaga. They only moved to the Big 12 in Pope’s final season there. Midmajor school, midmajor resources, midmajor outreach.

2.) Kevin Young is a direct descendant of Brigham Young. As much as we see Pope as the poster child for his particular religion, his ties pale in comparison to the current Cougar coach. This is a big deal for Mormons, who see college athletics as a billboard for evangelism. This a religion with deep, deep pockets and have made a university-wide effort to beef up spending across all sports for evangelical reasons. The familial ties allow Young to specifically benefit even more.

3.) Kevin Young is very close to the current owner of the Utah Jazz, Ryan Smith, who has become one of the largest known boosters in college sports. Unfathomably rich and willing to spend insane amounts of cash.

It isn’t the same world Pope was in. Frankly, if I were a BYU basketball fan, I’d be much more frustrated with Young, given the resources at his disposal than I currently am with Pope — and that’s saying something.
#2 so did inbred! Yuck

Totally disagree with you! You trust agent and player when they say they’re seriously interested. If rumors are correct then Pope smelled it out pretty fast and sent them home a day early. (Not sure that’s getting played.)

Pope struggled early this cycle, but I don’t think this recruitment was a problem.
Oh my bad.

We gave $6 million to BYU for Pooe and they went and got a better coach. Literally, BYU fans thanked us. That’s all you need to know.
Volume doesn’t make up for poor posts.

BYU was 23-12 with the probable #1 NBA draft pick. 7th and 500 in their league.

Upset in the first round of the NCAA by an 11 seed out of the SEC.

BYU coach was placed in that spot as a favor to the Jazz owner who he worked for and promised unlimited financial support.

Think you might be happier on your team’s board. UL would be my guess?
The constant negativity you wear as your badge has grown old and stale. Once started it’s tough for guys like you to reverse.

I absolutely agree with the points you made about the differences between Pope-era BYU and Kevin Young-era BYU. You did a great job reminding why comparing the two is unfair.

That said, I think you came down a little harsh with the ad-Homs. Dudah isn’t a Pope guy but he tends to be reasonable in how he engages the topic. I’m not sure labeling him a UL fan for this is fair. Almost all of us have varying levels of skepticism about some aspects of Pope, including you I’d bet. We don’t have to draw battle lines on every subject. Dudah seems to be a good dude, he just doesn’t trust the coach.

Always funny to see articles that are most likely a result of agents trying to use the media to up the bids get fought over by the audience. So much of this stuff has agendas behind it that is unseen by most of us.

💯 I just don’t think you can trust recruiting news nowadays as it’s all become manipulated by the agents (lawyers ruin everything) to gain leverage for themselves and clients

BYU fans rejoice as Kentucky mourns Mark Pope's blunder. Everything had seemed aligned for Wright to announce his commitment soon after his official visit, so long as the tour didn't go sour. If the panic level in Big Blue Nation is to be believed, all indications suggest that Rob Wright's scales are tilting back in favor of a return to Kevin Young and a second season with BYU basketball. It all started with Travis Branham's voice of concern on CBS as Wright's visit was underway. Branham, an analyst with 247 Sports, felt very confident that Wright would be committing to Kentucky after his meeting with Mark Pope. As time went on, however, his confidence quickly dipped as it seemed Wright could be lining up a return to BYU after all.
Wright's original asking price was too high for BYU to match, but has since dipped down to reality after exploring the transfer portal and testing the market proved that the Cougars weren't simply being stingy. Kentucky isn't exempt from such accusations, however. Most of the blame is falling on head coach Mark Pope, former lead of the BYU basketball program who landed his dream job at his alma mater, Kentucky. BYU fans have jumped on the excitement, and it's hard to blame them considering the fact that the man who arrived to fill Pope's absence has seemingly outperformed his predecessor in nearly every conceivable recruiting metriic
Why are doing negative stuff? Moron.

Shouldn’t be news to anyone. All the recruiting people said the visit was just a formality and it was basically a done deal. The visit clearly went horribly wrong!

Wright was never intending to leave BYU. Anyone that thought otherwise is delusional.
In hindsight, we can see Wright had no intention of leaving BYU by the time he visited Lexington. But at the time - without knowing that information - it wasn't delusional to think he may end up at UK, right?

Neither are very impressive coaches so far. All this back and forth and i can end the debate there.
It’s a sport where the narrative can change very quickly for all but the most decorated coaches.

There was a time early last year where it wouldn’t have been very controversial to say that Young was outpacing what Pope did at BYU by a fair margin. He went to a Sweet 16 in his first year after Pope couldn’t win a tournament game there, then signed Dybansta, who was putting up video game numbers and highlights while the team was ranked in the top 10 early on. Then the wheels fell off in Big 12 play and left it looking like an underachieving year considering they had a player that special. They don’t have a comparable recruit for this year, so their future trajectory is a bit less certain again.

Pope, on the other hand, looked almost dead in the water a couple of months ago, but suddenly has some life again after signing Momcilovic and Hampton in short order. If we can actually put it together to compete at the top of the conference this year, then there’s still a chance things can snowball in a positive way. These things often aren’t as set in stone as we sometimes like to act.

In 2 years he already has 2 NCAA tournament wins. How long it take Pope to get one of those at BYU? Oh that's right..
A whole 2 wins? Raise a banner. How old are you? Serious question. This isn’t Kentucky.

It really has. We all know our insiders don’t have good information anymore but it’s the national guys who come out and say this dude is a lock that really gets everyone mad when things like this happen. It’s hard to not fall for it when it feels good in the moment.

Failed to recruit who lol Ryan Smith has been enamored with Dybansta. He was always going to be at BYU. And id say it matters alot. Wouldn't you think Smith would make sure his longtime friend succeeds?

You are flat out smoking crack if you think an inner city black dude is “enamored” with BYU. So when did that start? Suddenly when Pope left? So he was “enamored” for 6 months? Okay guy.

and yes. Pope failed to recruit an apparent booster that’s a huge fan? Do I need to spell this out for you? Jesus Christ. We have the dumbest fans on the planet.

and I think I like you. Hard to keep usernames straight but what a dumb *** thing to say.

and for my many haters, won’t none of yall debate me cause it would mean you get slaughtered.

Read my post again. Smith enamored with Dybansta . He was the reason he moved to Utah in high school. I didnt say Dybansta was enamored with BYU. But Ryan Smith's money was always going to keep Dybansta in Utah. And last, Smith did contribute to NIL while Pope was there, but I'm sure not like he is now. This probably isnt going to help you understand and you'll still respond with a temper tantrum. Have you met the Andy guy on here ? Yall would get along well

so if dude donated as you said, why did Pope suck at recruiting there too!

Dude im with you on Pope isnt a great recruiter. I was saying earlier the Jazz owner is a big player in this. I think he is why they've gotten recruits at BYU.
