I thought I knew every urban adapted form of ball playing but this is new to me. I played stoop ball, stick ball, catchers fly up, wiffle ball, pong ball and almost any combination of sports equipment to make a game in a small area

I am not sure of the specific rules but the basic play was you throw a football on the sloped roof and you catch it for points when it comes down. They had 3 commentators for this exciting sport.

Do kids still play 500 where points assigned to pop up and grounders total a number ? I doubt it. It probably went the way of neighbor hood games and putting alternating hands on a bat to see who gets to lead off.

Tennis ball home run derby over the neighbors fence was great
We tried golf ball once at the old intramural fields. Taking softball batting practice guy pulled a golf ball out of the bag to surprise me. I double clutched & hit it over the road. Later I was pitching & did that. Dude ripped a line drive up the middle that missed me by a couple of feet. We quickly realized this game was a very bad & dangerous idea.

Over the half gravel half asphalt country road we lived on. But if it went in our pine tree, you could still catch it in home run territory for the out. Neighbors dad even built a backstop in their side yard so we didn’t have to chase pitches down the hill to the lake.

Bruce, I’ve always been curious about your opinion on this. Does it ever bother you to know that we have to go to ESPN+ to see 90% of our conference baseball games, and yet networks like ESPN2 are chock full of coverage of roof ball, sling golf, and axe throwing?

Not really since there are 50 or so games going on a Saturday. There are only room for about 5 on the cable channels in a time period. So I am just glad there is a place to see them.

They quit letting me play baseball in the neighborhood. They got tired of looking for the ball after I hit.

I caused our gutters to flood annually from playing roofball with baseballs, tennis balls, racquetballs, whiffle balls, and more.

So many lost to getting caught.

I used to regularly get in hot water for ruining whiffle ball bats hitting tennis balls with them.
