The water breaks (i.e. commercial breaks) are BS.
Any media timeout in any sport is BS. One great thing about soccer was that there was non-stop action. Cannot wait until they start doing TV timeouts every 10 minutes like they do in basketball (I know it's four minutes in basketball, but you get my drift)

I get it, I have had health scares myself, and it sucks not being able to work, or function like we normally do. I was fanning the flames too, so I apologize. Judging by your posts, I assume you graduated HS in 02'; did you play for Boyle or Danville by any chance? I remember (I think 99-03) when Boyle DESTROYED everyone (and they beat Catholic!). I am two years younger than you (but one grade younger; my birthday is in mid-September). Our HS FB was awful, but our basketball team won state in 2001. My brother and I played one year football in HS (different years); we were just ok (played some). I was just at Millennium Park a couple of weeks ago (nice park) and my niece goes to Centre.
In 1999 when Boyle started their 3 year undefeated streak we were the first team they played, @ Boyle. They'd given Bobby Lephew an extra year of high school football cause he died the KHSAA after he missed his senior year due to injury and won. He played at Louisville. Well we were up 10 on them and they came back and beat us 33-32. That was my sophomore year, I got a pick in the first quarter cause I saw the quarterback lock onto him and he just took a 3 step drop so I knew it was a dig route but God I got smoked trying to return it and knocked out of the game. We'd beaten them my freshman year when they tried to kick a field goal to tack on points, they were up by one, and we blocked it and returned it for a touchdown. Still the hardest hitting team I played was Boyle and Bell county. Danville smoked us the next week 55-6. We started 1-4, reeled off 7 straight, beating #6 Whitley 33-6 @Whitley and #2 an undefeated in district for 11 years Bell County. That was the 98 season and I was a freshman and only played special teams. Boyle beat us in basketball to go to the sweet 16. That was also my freshman year but it was the 99 basketball season.

I only played against Catholic in football my senior year which was the 2001 season but we played Nelson County there in Catholics bowl game to open the season and Catholic 4 weeks later. The first and only time I played on FieldTurf and it was like playing on a firm pillow. It made you faster, jump higher and hitting the ground was like hitting a pillow, I loved it. We beat Nelson 21-0 and lost to Catholic 35-21 but it wasn't that close.

You went to Lafayette. I never played against you guys in football or basketball although when we moved to 4A, the highest class my senior year as the smallest enrollment, even our sister school Pulaski had more students, and all the Lexington schools were our cross district (back then your opponent in the playoffs was your cross district in the first two rounds and whomever came out those same battles from the other side for the region and we were a 1 seed every year as we won district all four years.) We really got screwed cause my freshman year our cross district was Belfry, Sheldon Clarke, Pike County Central. Then my sophomore and junior year our cross district was Louisville Central, whom we actually beat in the playoffs somehow, Louisville Wagner, bourbon county, Bullit East. Now you get to play your district opponents again in the first two rounds and we cake walked our district opponents every year besides my freshman year but still won it via tiebreaker for beating undefeated Bell County 29-20 but we lost 3 big pieces of our team in barely beating them 29-20. Hey both of our birthdays are in September. What do ya know.

So you played at Southwestern (Warriors?); I remember you guys killed a bunch of teams like 70-0, 76-0, etc. I think in 99, you all only lost to Boyle and Bullitt East in the playoffs. I take it that you blew out your knee in the 2001 playoff game vs Lexington Dunbar (we called them PLD)? In 4A, Nelson County won it in 1997; Lafayette played them close in 97, but got worked in 98 (just before I started at Lafayette). In the only year I played, we beat the two Laurel County schools and got worked over in every other game (Eric Shelton ran all over us - we lost 59-0). My brother played in 03', and Lafayette made the playoffs (played Boyle in Louisville at PJCS - got shutout) but Dunbar was too much (beat us twice). Like I said, my brother and I played a little bit, but neither one of us started (mostly on Special Teams and a package or two). My brother played because he had friends that played, and I played to get away from home (family issues at the time). I made the JV squad in basketball, but same thing, played only one year, and did ok (I'm even shorter than you!). What do you think about Kentucky going to six divisions? I thought it was ridiculous to have Johnson Central, Perry Central, Boyd County being in our Class/Region.

We were mostly a baseball school (made it to state before Harrison County annihilated them) until our unlikely run in 2001 in the Sweet 16. We lost to Catholic in 2000 (close game at half, then they pulled away), and we were downright NASTY towards Matt Heisenbuttel and the rest of the Catholic team/fans; the principal called us out on the intercom the following Monday for being "inappropriate". In 2001, we beat Catholic, and beat Carlisle County, Fairdale (Coric Riggs), North Hardin, and Male (Michael Bush) for the Championship. Kentucky beat Iowa in the NCAA's and Tayshaun went off that night. Male was up 33-18, and we came back and won 54-49. Bobby Madison was on a heater that night. In basketball, I think you all were Region 12, District 48? Didn't you guys play All Saints and annihilate them (like 115-35)? I know Regions have changed a lot since we were in HS (Scott County was in the 8th; Lafayette was in the 11th - now they're both in the 11th, and the Jessamine schools moved to the 12th).

Yes, birthday is September 16th (hence the "916" in my username - I used to be "Lakercat" - I grew up out West before moving to KY in middle school).

I don’t generally support the profit-seeking over expansion of tournaments, but watching Cote D’Ivoire tie Spain and Noe the DRC go toe to toe with Portugal, I think the cut line has been too high. This is great stuff.

I "played" football at Lafayette in the early 90s. I think we won like three games in three years (one year we won none?). The best athletes saved themselves for baseball. BUT, I did magically tackle Shaun Alexander from Boone County on a kickoff. The next kickoff he ran right past me.

It's a tough call. Minnows can hang for a single game in soccer, but in the end, they have no real chance to advance very far. And unlike the NCAA Tourney, where a team can easily play 4 games in 2 weeks, you're adding a lot of time to the tournament any time you add teams.

The smartest thing FIFA could probably do is go to 64, but sacrifice some money by playing a tighter schedule with multiple games at the same time. You wouldn't need to add any extra games that any single team would have to play, you'd just set the cut line at top 2 teams in every group. But FIFA is about maximizing profit, and the TV money from having every game go solo is too tempting for them to pass up.

Yup, we were a baseball school, but it was all about Chuck Smith and the band. I missed Band Camp, so I was out; I'm not sure I would have liked it anyway. I played under Don Young (He coached Jessie Clark until 1995 or so - taught Civ (or "Law and Justice") and US History); our Principal, Mike McKenzie fired him after the year I played. My brother played for Mike Harmon. Like I said, I "played" mop-up, spot duty, but hey, I played. I was better at basketball; I had Don Adkins (basketball coach) for PE, and his partner (for PE class), Coach Arnold (Girls team) swore like a sailor. Coach Adkins had a temper, for sure.

I had Psycho Southgate for Chem (did not learn a thing), Mr Raleigh for Biology (copied Mr Gentry's syllabus idea), and Jay Fore (LOL) for European History. I also had Mr Combs for US History. Only one of these four teachers are still alive.

Want to hear about NBA players flopping, or any other sport for that matter, ever again.

Australia should be banned from the NEXT world cup. That was god awful.

That 10 years sure took out a lot. Band leader, principal, all the coaches. But they can never take that tackle away from me! I think the coach only let me on the team because I helped the team GPA.

I haven't watched soccer for a long, long time until this week. Watching about 5 or 6 games was like watching some old movie fight scenes. Even with very little contact, some of these players were acting like they had been hit by a Mac truck.

I wasnt able to focus on the game in its entirity, but I really didnt see the US doing any of this. But I swear towards the final like 20 minutes youd think there wss a sniper in the stands taking shots on the Aussie team lol.

Southgate was a terrible teacher. She was more interested in advanced mathematics over teaching chemistry. I later in life became a teacher and realized she was perhaps the worst. I had Kaye’s for US history and spent a lot of time off Campus running from JD trying to get back on. I played for Rick kazee and that was a wild experience especially considering what happened my jr year when he brought the beer to the teachers meeting.

Ah, Mr Kays, he had a glass eye; I had Combs, and he was cool (as long as you did your work), but all of my friends had Kays (fourth period). Southgate was awful; I missed a week because of illness (major section - exam was three days after I got back), and I went to after school tutoring to catch up; she told me to "get lost" because I asked her a question. Ended up with a 90 anyway, but I had to teach myself (I mean, HS was a joke anyway). But we did what we wanted and she never batted an eye.

JD did not play around; I saw him cuff another student over some earphones in the library (dude swung at him - I still have some connections to that student now). He always said that he was "five-nine, two hundred and eight seven pounds". I got busted a couple times too, once with JD, not a good experience.

They were doing the remodel when I was there, and the hallway past the library (that went towards the counselor's office) was blocked off. The monitor (whom I thought was a parent volunteer) would not allow us into the library on lunch period. I told my classmate "F this, let's go". Come to find out, it was the School Secretary (Ms Fulkerson?); I also waved at one of my teachers, so she got my name from him (boo). Mr Farris suspended me (LOL). Kazee was already gone when I was there. I think Coach Pointer was there too, but he also left before I came. There were some amazing teachers (Doc Sallee, Bonner, Combs, Kewin, Kays, Ray, etc) that genuinely cared, but others that did not GAF. Our German teacher, John Krueger cared a great deal, but his class was hard AF (hated him then but appreciate what he did now).

You've never seen a NBA stomped on the top of their foot with cleats nor have the cleats raked down their leg, have you? NBA players would be exhausted & whining in 10 minutes out there.

I know this, and it's all I need to know: they don't brush into another player running down the court and then fall to the ground, roll around, like they got shot.

You can make all the arguments you want about knee scrapes from cleats, or comparing the endurance ability of someone who is 5'7 to someone who is 7'4.. but the above is absolutely indefensible. Its the worst thing in maybe all of sports, the amount of flopping that goes on. NBA has flopping, and it's maybe the 2nd worst sport for it, but it pales in comparison. Not even close,

Not to take the crazy train off the rails but the Euros don’t pay for healthcare.

When you don’t have to spend on defense, all that money goes to other things.

We’re floating Ukrain/Europe and keeping Russia at bay. We’re floating the Middle East keeping their nuts at bay.

China floats a lot of infrastructure in Africa, but we’re in there too with all the charity, “NGOs”, shots, medicines, food, etc…

I'm a huge soccer fan, been watching for years:

I absolutely hate flopping in soccer. Unfortunately it is not really the players fault. The official almost never calls a foul unless you fall. Also, if you act hurt, it causes stoppage that sometimes leads to a video review. Exactly how Messi got his PK today.

Comparing soccer fouls to basketball fouls is like comparing apples to oranges. They are not the same at all because of what is allowed in soccer and what's not called if you don't fall down. Also soccer has advantage which is not a thing in basketball and changes how fouls are called and is another aspect that incenctivizes acting hurt

With the prices they put on the tickets I think it's safe to say there aren't any poor folks there from the USA or anywhere else.

Also, the penalties for getting called for a foul are VERY different since a point in soccer is worth a LOT more than 2 foul shots in basketball.

Clearly. Just like almost all Asian and Indian students who come; they are the top 1-2% that you see. There are plenty of poor Chinese and Indians, and plenty of Chinese and Indians who are mentally challenged. You only see the best of the best here. I knew a kid from China who got a new Audi every year, and made some disparaging remarks about my car that was 10 years old (I kicked him out - we had not left yet). At that time (15 years ago), their parents had to have like $25K in the bank. Insane.

False. Besides, someone fakely brushes the hand of a shooter & it's a foul. LMAO.
