With football season fast approaching, it's never to early to throw out some predictions on who will be playing for the state title come December. In the east Tarboro graduated a great senior class. However I've heard great things about this upcoming group. But I've also heard quite a few teams in the east believe it's the year to get Tarboro. As for the West, who are some teams that will be in the mix, and the overall favorite?

Corvian, Murphy, Starmount, CSD, Mitchell, East Wilkes in no particular order.

Starmount has several starters coming back especially at OL and LB plus some very good skill players. They got some transfers as well they will help out. I’m

Keyvon Propst may be the best LB in NC that nobody knows about.

1.Corvian- for the past 2 years were low on numbers, but they can get the athletes around the Charlotte area.
2. Starmount- could go 10-0 in the regular season. Very well stacked up.
3. Murphy- They have players returning that are studs, but might have to replace some Lineman. For Murphy that want take much.

Count on these 3 programs in the West to be playing in late November and early December.

Tarboro is the team to beat in the East. Who are some other programs in the East that might make a run in the play offs? I am guessing Edenton Holmes, Warren County, Hobbton, and Lakewood.

I know Starmount got a transfer from North Wilkes. Did they get any other transfer from other programs? If so, what other Schools? Just curious?

With corvian, they are just as likely to lose kids to transfer as they are to pick them up. But from what I've heard this offseason I do believe they are gonna be one of the favorites.

The ones you mentioned that's it more than likely. Warren county and edenton return a lot

Tarboro in the East and Starmount or Corvian in the West. Murphy will be tough as well. I think the state champion will come from the West this year. If Starmount can get the transfers in like Corvian then I think the Rams will be state champions in December.

Last year is over and we ready for 2026 to start.

I’ve got nothing but respect for Starmount and their fans, but Did they bring in some more players from the game I watched them play Murphy last year?
I follow up on Starmount and alot of other football around the State and i have tiedowns to the Starmount area. I know they return alot of good talent and most of them will be Seniors. And getting a few transfer. That really adds up.

While I do believe StarMount will be very good this upcoming year, that's a very tall task to live up to.

Getting a few transfers can really add up. I can see Starmount getting players from Elkin, but South Columbus and North Brunswick? Must have family or tiedowns to the Starmount area.

According to Deana at least 5 players have transferred in so far. Also their best lineman will be back after suffering an ACL injury during the middle of last season. Not sure how all this plays out.

Okay well since getting transfers is now widely acceptable - let’s make a deal now that there will be no complaining about Corvian and their transfers/recruiting when you have to play them in the western finals.

If these are recruited players then I would agree with you. I can't speak for either team though because I only know what I read in the groups. Based on recent history about Starmount it seems they have been on the losing end of transfers in the past few years.

The kids from Down East have ties to our area in Yadkin. They were here before and left due to parents’ jobs and came back due to jobs.

Elkin and Starmount kids been going across the river for 60 years!! lol!!

A lot of different things to look at in that statement. Getting a transfer because parents moved is very different than getting a bunch of top quality athletes in a random lottery.

South Columbus to Starmount is almost 3.5 hours, and North Brunswick is almost 4 hours away. That isn't someone just getting upset and going to the school down the road. I would assume that the parents moved for more reasons than just Football. Assuming they moved for work, Yadkin county is a lot cheaper to live in than Winston (nearest large city).

Now, I could see the Elkin and East Wilkes transfers as being part of your argument, as I'm sure parents/kids see Starmount as a better opportunity than the respective schools for Football. We don't know the details, but it does get annoying with transfers everywhere and them being glorified. Not saying it's right, but like Deana said, that's been happening with those three schools for decades.

FYI: I have no ties to Starmount, EW, Elkin or any schools listed here. Just wanted to point out that getting a transfer (especially one from across the state) is definitely different than getting 25 athletes in a random lottery.

A player from Forbush 2 years ago wanted to transfered to Starmount his Senior year. They told him he would have to sit out a year to play a sport. That didn't go over well with the family. So he transfered over to Mount Airy for his Senior year to play football. The transfer rule for Yadkin County. You have to sit out a year if you play a sport.

I believe that is without a change in address, correct? Also, both Forbush and Starmount are part of Yadkin county where none of the other schools listed are, which I'm sure played a role in sitting out.

In Yadkin, if a kid wants to transfer and play sports between Starmount and Forbush they must do so before the start of their junior year.

The young man that wanted to transfer from FHS to SHS was going to be a rising senior and was granted to transfer but was denied to play sports.

Murphy’s D really hurt the rams offense too. Knocked a lot of its timing off.

As for the field conditions, imo those actually gave Starmount more of a chance in the game. My money says Murphy would have put up big numbers on a dry field against the rams. But you are correct about 2025 being over. Bring on 2026.

You think the team with the big bruiser of a running back was at more of a disadvantage than the team that likes to throw deep shots while playing in the mud? Is this your first time watching football?

I think Murphy was a better team and probably would have won a close game anyway. Probably 28-24 or something like that. To say a team that runs the ball extremely well has a disadvantage over a team that has to rely on the passing game to generate offense on a muddy field might be one of the dumbest things I've ever read in my entire life.

All I was saying is that the conditions pretty much took away Murphy’s offense too. It wasn’t just a Starmount problem. The wing t offense relies on misdirection, deception, and lots of pulling from the OL and cutting from the backs. Hard to do much of that in a mud pit. It’s also hard to pass in those conditions, which is why Murphy had no passing game that night to compliment their running game like they usually do on a dry surface. Basically all Starmount’s D had to worry about was Clem and the occasional big busted run from one of the other backs.

Also, on a dry field, I highly doubt Starmount would have been able to set anything up with their passing game against Murphy. The Dog D would eat them alive. Murphy played against much better passing offenses last year than Starmount’s.

After some final back and forth over last season, it’s on to 2026 and to the topic of this thread. In the East, Tarboro it is until someone else proves otherwise. Pretty simple there. In the West, one team out of Corvian, Starmount, or Murphy is probably the most likely, but I could see an unexpected team (likely another charter school like CSOD) come out of nowhere and surprise some people, or maybe a traditional team like East Wilkes? It impossible to predict a winner right now but it should be a fun race. As usual, home field advantage is always a big factor in the playoffs so it will be very important to try and secure as many post season home games as possible.

I believe Mitchell is a team to keep an eye on.
