Rough start for the Qatar keeper. The bounce left him little choice but to charge, but for his good effort, he suffered a heavy blow to the head and neck, took a yellow card, and gave up a penalty kick.

As much as I post here, I would be remiss if I didn't comment in a soccer related thread.

Since the nineties I've been a bonfide United Manchester fan ( ManU ), confirmed, card carrying, every bit as much as any BBN member. The only difference is that I was born into Kentucky basketball (circa 1969, and following with my own eyes since I was 4... ) and I only became a ManU fan ( and EPL devotee ) during Sir Alex Ferguson's incredible years ( I trace it back to 96' specifically )....

I think this year's team is the most talented team we could have for this world cup, it may prove to be one of the best USMNT ever. I'm glad to see America embrace soccer and would love to see an even better following. America has come a LONG way in paying attention to soccer. Especially the EPL. Having Pochettino coach is a god send for us. We're in very good hands.

I wakeup during the EPL season and have gameday Saturdays to wake up to ( 6am, just like I used to wakeup early to watch Star Blazers and then Looney Tunes ) so it feels like I was a kid again on saturday mornings ! haha !

USA network and NBC does a good job on coverage and I enjoy the commentary, which stands in stark contrast to so many NFL, NBA, and College basketball - football gmaes where I DON'T like the talking heads .... it's so bad I (long ago) synced up Goose and Tom during any televised broadcast so I WON'T have to listen to Bilas and Vitale or Fran ... or ....

well, you get it. But I digress....

I guess you can say I'm pro English Premiere League like I am pro SEC. I like to see the EPL teams do well on the biggest stage. There's always a lot to follow in the world of soccer, no matter what league or team or players strike your fancy. In most regards, I try to stay as much of a neutral, but in my heart, I have always loved ManU. ( I think Carrick is on the verge of coming in next season and crushing it, we shall see.... )

The world cup, to me, is the biggest sporting event and the most prestigious to win of any sport on planet Earth. It would be a dream come true to see our USMNT win the title game. It's a true worldwide event.

Peace & Harmony !
I follow EPL closely too. After CFB, it's the sport/league I watch the most of. NBA is unwatchable. If I die never seeing another 3 point shot I'll die happy. Ruined the game imo. No one tries to work the ball inside because the reward isn't there.

I've been a Newcastle U fan since the days of Alan Scherer - EPL all-time leading goal scorer. I'm not a frontrunner. It's why I've stayed true to UK football.

Here's what they could do to make soccer watchable to me (understanding the Jim Cornette quote "you know what they are going to do to get me like golf, mess up golf for the people that like golf") but take at 3 least 3, maybe 4 players off the field and give them some room to move.
Delusional take, Gle{n}/n*n. Soccer field is usually about 110 x 75 yards. Players would be run ragged.

I agree with J-Nunn, I’ve always thought offsides should be done away with. It’s like prohibiting fast breaks in basketball. Feel the same way about hockey. Let the players go wherever they want…then you‘d see a lot more scoring
If they not gonna do away with it, then stop the offsides by the hair on your chinny chin chin. Make it so if any part of the offensive player, any part, is even with the defender, then he is onsides. Would open up the game so much.

Soccer was the first organized sport I played and it's fun as hell to play. But they always played me at fullback (last line of defense before the goalie). My last year they moved me to forward and I led the league in goals. I hat tricked in the championship game in the first half so my coach moved me to goalie and I told him that wasn't my thing. Long story short even with a tie we'd of won the championship. There was no overtime. Well they scored 3 goals on me. With 4 minutes remaining the dude playing fullback stopped the ball and was gonna boot it down field. The dude turns around and kicks it towards me and I was screaming at Coach to put me back at forward. Well that kid scored the game winning goal and we lost the championship to a team we'd beaten 6-0 and 5-1 in the regular season. No team had stayed within 3 goals on us the WHOLE season in the final scores. I was so pissed I quit soccer that day and went to football. Never even went to the banquet. Sadly coach and his wife who was an assistant and pregnant were killed in a car wreck literally a month later. Their son, a teammate and later a classmate, is now coaching it and killing it. I loved soccer with all my heart but that championship loss crushed my love for it and then coaches deaths really drove me to football. Plus my brother always called me a sissy for not playing real football.

An offside trap is a big part of defensive strategy. You have to be even or behind at least one defender when the ball is played.

I dont mind offsides as a rule but it's frustrating at times. VAR helps a little but if the smallest part of an opposing player is beyond the last defender before the ball being played that constitutes an offside.

The rule and the enforcement in the high school level of soccer can be beyond infuriating. Very subjective and most of the time the side/flag refs aren't in the correct positions. That's assuming your teams/game is lucky enough to have 3 refs

The Netherlands and Japan delivered an entertaining match today, especially in the second half. I can root for both of those teams when they’re not playing the US.

This CIV/ECU match has any energy to it as well, but it may be just that the microphones are catching the roar of an enthusiastic crowd.

Ivory Coast has some speedy players.

I also like that they just kick at the goal sometimes instead of the constant crosses where Jack **** happens.

I don’t know anything about soccer but getting more kicks at the goal seems like it would be a good strategy

England has the talent and is due but would rather not have them win it on American soil.

I remember when Brazil had so much talent that players would change nationalities to the motherland Portugal and play for their national team.

So not only were you Michael Jordan in basketball, but you were also Ed Reed in football and Lionel Messi. Damn, we got super star; what an honor! Were you Wayne Gretzky too, or were you just Bobby Orr? Did you play Tiger even at Bethpage Black, too? You're only a year older than Lebron; the Nets might sign you to a contract.

How can I forget? You were Barry Bonds, with Greg Maddox-level pitching (but threw >100, even on sliders, right), but could also Gold Glove at every defensive position.

It was youth League soccer bro, 10-12 year old. I don't think being all region in basketball and first team all state in football is claiming to be Michael Jordan or Ed Reed or Lionel Messi. But you're gonna feel pretty phucking stupid, well prob not, when I post the proof. I've gotta doctors appointment this week to see if I'm ready to drive and then it's straight to my parents house. They've kept all the newspapers and trophies and pictures. You won't apologize when I post it regardless. I never played baseball but some people were really were good at sports. I know a hard concept for you to comprehend. I don't need to lie, I know it's a concept you wouldn't understand. Let's make a bet, if I ain't posted it by the end of the week I'll leave the board for good, when I do post it you apologize and bounce for good?

Nah, I'm not the one flexing about a 10-12 Soccer league or what I did in HS 25 years ago (seriously, no one cares). True or not, you flexing, then demanding that everyone apologizes and you cussing at people just scream "insecurity". The fact that you're going to put this effort into proving you were some athletic savant is pathetic, but you do you. Besides, you posting newspaper clips does nothing, because I can do the same thing, so do not waste your time. Maybe keep your mouth shut and not flex behind a keyboard would be a wise thing? I was decent at sports, but like you, I was someone who no one really knew/cared about, so I guess we're both in the same place (but you are a few years older than I). But nevertheless,

Also, if you resurrected from the dead like you claim, it would be wise not to get worked up over what someone says on an anonymous post. But you're a 42 year-old man seeking validation from people you do not even know (even if your claims are true). Maybe those years were the highlight of your life, or who knows.

I'm more upset at your lack of reading comprehension skills than anything. Flexing is talking about a 10-12 year old youth League loss where I allowed the four goals that got us beat in the championship? Yeah I led the league in goals, big deal. I don't think that makes me special. I was literally dunking on myself.

Asking for you to apologize to proof after you ran your mouth like a typical Internet tough guy and are calling me a damn liar. You may run in circles that let you disrespect each other but I don't. You've now moved the goal posts (conveniently) to now I'm seeking attention when you literally called me out as Michael Jordan, Ed Reed and Lionel Messi. It's all fun and games and loser BS.

See and now you're being a sly coward by hinting that I'm lying about what I went through. I posted a damn picture of me in the coma. I've got plenty more. It's not validation I seek, its people like you running your mouth, then scrambling when I bet you to prove you wrong. Just like the person in the other thread wouldn't apologize after proof. Sorry I didn't film myself with the double pneumonia and sepsis I didn't know I had, have my ex film me coding. But I do have video of my life flight if you wanna see that. And I can't work, I can't really do anything right now except dick around on the net. So instead of moving the goalposts again, quit responding. You call me a liar I'll prove you wrong every time but make it worth exposing my identity by you leaving the board for good. So put me on ignore. I've never put anyone on ignore and not about to break that streak for you.✌🏻

EDIT: I wrote a much different response, but none of this really matters. I'm glad that you got to enjoy some athletic success, and that you got through your health journey, and I wish you the best of luck, and Thank you for your service. At the end of the day, we do not know each other, so it really does not matter whether someone is lying or telling the truth, or what people think of us. Truthfully, you do not need to post any articles, videos, etc. It's just a message board, and we all want Kentucky to be good, and (hopefully) want the US to win the World Cup. Good on Cape Verde in drawing with Spain.

Im in Seattle today, and took the train into town, and right by the stadium. Train was full of people going to the game. Most of the crowd I was around seemed to be neutral, as we did not see a large contingent of Egypt or Belgium fans. However, the overall atmosphere in town today was pretty electric.

You're right, it really doesn't. I understand people inflate, exaggerate or flat out lie about many things. But I truly do my best to do none of those, even online. Thank you for the best wishes on my health, and thanking me for my service. I truly do appreciate that and this kind gesture when I went out of my way to be a dick. For that I apologize. I'm in a really weird emotional place I don't understand and it makes my hyper fixated on stupid things like proving I was a really good athlete in my day. You're right, it doesn't matter. 25 years ago lol. Please understand I'm highly medicated on oxy, Xanax, Valium, Gabapentin so I'm likely to say mean things and regret it, like now. We're brothers of BBN and rooting for America. That's what matters. We're all good brother on my end, hopefully yours as well now. Good bless you and yours and all of us.

I like how the refs stay on the field to face the players and coaches after every game. A nice step towards accountability.

How dare you bring logic and rational thought to my statement!?

A regular season game where they dont call offsides correctly where my son's team is getting boat raced 0-6 is in fact world ending indecision making!!!!

All jokes aside, I look back sometimes on how pissed I get at those non-calls or bad calls and get pretty embarrassed. Well said sir.

I get it, I have had health scares myself, and it sucks not being able to work, or function like we normally do. I was fanning the flames too, so I apologize. Judging by your posts, I assume you graduated HS in 02'; did you play for Boyle or Danville by any chance? I remember (I think 99-03) when Boyle DESTROYED everyone (and they beat Catholic!). I am two years younger than you (but one grade younger; my birthday is in mid-September). Our HS FB was awful, but our basketball team won state in 2001. My brother and I played one year football in HS (different years); we were just ok (played some). I was just at Millennium Park a couple of weeks ago (nice park) and my niece goes to Centre.
