That’s the “Tyranny of Choice”This is a real thing. My wife's family and friends from Brazil and other south american countries have very vivid memories and stories of going food shopping for the first time in the US (early 90s). Most of them came out of the store without buying anything because they were so overwhelmed by the number of choices. My mother-in-law distinctly recalls just needing to get milk, but she saw so many bottles that all looked different that she had no idea what any of them could be, so she left. Today, my wife successfully navigates many stores and spends money on a number of unnecessary options, regardless of cost. All is well in America.
I just want my wife to stop buying crap. That’s the “Tyranny of Choice”
The Tyranny of Choice by Renata Salecl argues that late capitalism's emphasis on endless individual choice paradoxically creates anxiety, guilt, and dissatisfaction, rather than freedom, by making people feel responsible for their own happiness and failures. Drawing on sociology, psychoanalysis, and philosophy, Salecl examines how this ideology, seen in everything from dating apps to self-help, shifts focus from social critique to self-critique, hindering social change and leading to a constant, anxious search for the "perfect" option
Haha!!! I hear you. The struggle is real.I just want my wife to stop buying crap.
But they're saving money by spending money.I just want my wife to stop buying crap.
There are quite a few posters who are really into soccer, very knowledgeable about the sport, who don’t normally haunt the Premier League thread but have posted in the World Cup threads. Very nice.I am thoroughly enjoying following the World Cup on here. Good job guys. Your coverage is uplifting.
