They reduce choice from American consumers. Just as stupid, tariffs supposedly help manufacturing workers. All American workers and consumers are not manufacturing workers. Just as bad, Trump and crew of mental midgets don't understand the economics prevent much of manufacturing to come here. Supply chains, lower wages, etc.
It would be great to have more manufacturing here, but Trump's approach is naive.
I'm a centrist. I had a very conservative professor for one my economics classes. I agreed with pretty much everything he said of why tariffs are bad policy.

Tariffs would have been more effective if the Trump administration would have targeted specific industries where the U.S has a significant trade deficit. In regard to hurting American consumers I agree but letting foreign countries slide with one sided trade deals is bad policy.
Our trade policies essentially let the U.S.A. have fairly low inflation for about two decades. That let our economy innovate and grow. 4.5% unemployment was not that bad.
Back in the hey-day of boxing with Ali, Frazier, Hearns, Hagler, and Sugar Ray Leonard it was fun to watch. Not so much now.
