This is true. Their home lives are so beyond sickening that the last thing they care about is what they score on a math test. I’ve seen kids who have gone through unimaginable trauma. I wish more people understood what we are dealing with in schools. Horrific things our students endure at home. It’s really sad.
When we went to online report cards - and I am at a good public school - we had a kindergarten class where only 4 of 25 parents logged in to look at report cards. We went back to paper so parents might actually glance at them. Parents don’t give a damn.
I'll bet the numbers for NW Iowa were higher than for the rest of the state. Especially NE Iowa.

Surely every state has bad parents. Why is Iowa still coming up short educationally even when compared to them?
I don't doubt that there are many parents who don't take care of their kids. It's a massive problem. Which is why school is so important for these kids. Schools are a place where kids can escape this home chaos and at least get some normalcy and guidance.
But apparently Republicans in Iowa think that even this is too much. They take resources away from these schools, give those resources to private schools who don't have to take these kids, and then wonder why our education system is broken.
Yep because Iowa is the only state in the US dealing with that so that’s what made us drop. I’m sure the states that moved up don’t have that issue. But I am not interested enough to research it. I feel a lot of education comes from how hard the student wants to learn.

I grew up knowing this is not the correct answer because those two numbers should equal 100.0%. Was Kim behind the push for “new math”.
I’m sure Kim should take some blame but there are tons of things to factor into this. I’ll start with the parents. It seems there is a larger number of parents today that think the school should teach their kids and they aren’t responsible for anything.
Heck, we just potty trained our 2 year old and were talking with the parent of another 2 year old and the mom said she’s just been waiting for the school/daycare to do it for her.
Part of this could be because parents both need to work and have less time at home.
Another reason could be the result of kids playing sports 24/7 from the age of 3 on up. Sports are a priority oschool and family life. Even if a sibling isn’t playing, they will be drug along with and most likely spend the entire time staring at a phone or tablet.
Another possible reason for the decline in education in Iowa is the growing numbers of minorities coming to the state. Am I saying all of them are bad, of course not, but is it possible that this has caused a decline, absolutely. It’s possible a kid doesn’t understand English the best and falls behind as a result. Other minorities also have different cultural backgrounds and parenting. A 17 year old was recently arrested in Iowa city for shooting at a crowd of people at 2 in the morning. It’s later come out that he was arrested a few moths prior for stealing items out of vehicles, that took place at 4am. I’m guessing this kid and the kids along with him during both of these instances were getting straight A’s in school, that’s assuming they were in school. I’m sure there are plenty of POs parents just like this kids parents.
But of course all of this is Kim’s fault, just ask a lib.

Your post reads as if you think Iowa is last and not just at roughly the 50% mark just like all the others dealing with those issues.
Same question to you. All states have parents problems. So why is Iowa education still falling behind?
Well I would guess Iowa has more parent problems than other states.
All states have education systems in place. All education systems receive funding. Why would Iowa be falling behind compared to others if they both have education systems.
Hopefully you can now see that just because one has something the other has, it doesn’t mean they are equal.

I know Iowa has dropped to 50% when it used to be one of the top. For Iowa to drop, another state moves up. Did that state( or those states) deal with the same issues? My point is, it may be more than just immigration, although I am not disputing it could be a factor.

Perhaps the voucher program, where private schools hand pick who they enroll, leaves the public schools to care for the rest?
And when Reynolds and her Republican lackeys refuse to properly fund public education, these falling performance numbers are to be expected.

1. State funding has continued to lag school district expenses. A 2% funding increase(which is about what schools have gotten) doesn't cover increased utilities, bus fuel, building insurance, and the like.
2. To balance a budget,teachers are laid off and class sizes subsequently are larger.
You know what happens when the student to teacher ratio goes from 18/1 up to 25/1??? Yep...less time for teachers to individually tutor kids having learning problems.
That's the story of Kim Reynolds public school funding.
It's not complicated!!!!!
To top it off, Republicans decide to give $7,800 vouchers to wealthy parents already sending their kids to parochial schools.

The really cool part is that the Department of Health & Human Services in Iowa also has had funding cuts to weather. I bet you didn't know that HHS workers are limited to when they can request drug screens on a case even when the abuse alleged is related to substance abuse. Or that HHS now relies mostly on oral fluid testing which is cheaper and less reliable. So lots of addicts are slipping through the cracks and parenting their kids while using drugs. That surely wouldn't affect those kids when they go off to school. Or don't attend because their parent is too drunk or high to get out of bed and get them to school.
