Friday night’s match was probably the most fun I have ever had watching the USMNT, and I have been watching almost every game they have played since 2002. They got the tactics right, they had confidence, and individual quality was on display before the world.
Just finished watching the Australia-Türkiye game. While Türkiye certainly displayed a lot more individual quality than the Aussies, Australia won by sticking to their bread-and-butter tactics: keep their shape in a low block and then pick and choose the moments to hit the other team on the counter. They clearly have the ability to finish when only given a few chances, and their newly promoted starting goalkeeper did phenomenal. I think it’s going to require a similar effort tactically and individual individually from our players to break them down. Might need a new wrinkle of some sort as well, for they are even more compact than what we saw from Paraguay. Need to be careful about getting stretched if we are pushing for a goal because they have some pace on the counter. They remind me of the USMNT from previous generations.
