There are some shades of grey to this I'd think (though I know we live in a world where everyone digs in one way or the other)...his gambling on his own team was for peanuts back when he was on the scout team. He never bet on a game that he participated in, never gambled substantial amounts of money on his own team, etc.
I'm sure he had some level of addiction if he was betting on stuff that he wasn't allowed to bet on, using other people to help him get his action and hide his tracks, etc. But he stopped gambling on his team once he had an opportunity to play, gambled very small amounts of money, didn't lose more than he could afford to lose, never conspired to fix a game, etc. What he did was wrong...but it's also a far cry from those working with the mob to throw games for 5 or 6 figures.
